Local groups “feud” in fundraiser

A team from the Hamilton Lions Club faced off against the Roaring Rotary Eradicators during  the 5th annual Hamilton Feud held on Jan. 20 at the Palace Theater.

 

There were no losers that evening - the teams split the more than $1,000 raised from ticket sales and concessions at the event. Crane said the Rotarians will use their funds to benefit the purchase of kids’ books for the Hamilton Public Library, while Khazaee said the Lions will use their portion towards their various projects for the sight and hearing impaired.

A chili supper and auction to raise funds for repairs to the Ogemaw East Branch Library in Prescott packed the Richland Township Hall Saturday, Jan. 21 and brought in more than $1,600. “It went fantastic. I am thrilled,” said Richland Township Treasurer Deborah Burton, an event organizer. “We had around 100 people. … Between the raffle, the ticket donations and the auction, we raised over $1,600.” Burton said auction block included donated items from area businesses in or near Prescott, Skidway Lake and West Branch. She said there were also white elephant and mystery items auctioned off.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., and Green's talk will begin at 7 p.m., to be followed by a book signing.

I Love My Library fundraiser now under way

Joseph and Elizabeth Shaw Public Library, Clearfield, invites everyone in the community to feel the love during January and February while supporting the goal of superior library service to the citizens of Clearfield and the surrounding area.
Shaw Public Library will place hearts on display at the library as part of the I Love My Library fundraiser. Donors may choose a heart to honor a loved one, living or deceased, or a heart to show appreciation for the library itself. Hearts are available at the front desk of the library for a $1 donation. Double hearts showing appreciation for the library are available to business owners or managers or any other interested patron for a $5 donation. Hearts will be offered through Feb. 18 and will remain on display throughout February.

Library Penny Drive

The Friends of the Nan are organizing this year's Penny Drive fundraiser. The annual event is held every winter at the library, where a glass jar is set up at the collections desk and the public is asked to donate any spare change they may have. "It's always been a lot of fun and really successful," Chenoweth said. "The community basically just opens up their hearts and their pockets to us." Last year the penny drive helped raise over $1000, which the library used to purchase instructional DVDs for children. Chenoweth said the goal for this year was to raise $1100, with the proceeds going towards updating the library CD and music collection.

“Deck the Halls with Southern Writers” was the theme for the evening, with Barbara Bates Smith of Clyde, NC reading from the works of Lee Smith, Allan Gurganus and Truman Capote. Musical accompaniment was provided by Jeff Sebens on the hammered dulcimer. The evening featured a Southern Christmas meal by the Buttercup Café of Denton.

Teen fundraiser to feature life-size board games

The third annual Life-Size Lock-In on Jan. 27 will feature life-size versions of Monopoly, Sorry, Candyland and Clue set up for teams to work their way through. Registration will take place from 4:45 to 5 p.m., and teens will stay at the library until the program ends at 9:30 p.m. Cost to play is $5, and the proceeds will benefit Friends of Greenwood Public Library to pay for materials for future teen programs and books for the young adult collection. Teens who bring a canned food item can pay a discounted entry fee of $3, and the food will be distributed to a local food pantry.

Ever wondered what that old rocking chair in the basement is worth? It’s time to find out. The Central Alabama Antique and Appraisal Market will be held at Dr. Stancil Handley’s farm on March 3 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The Friends of the Columbiana Public Library organized the market, and proceeds will be used to fund new programs and expand existing programs.

Jigsaw puzzle tournament to be held in North Platte

The North Platte Public Library Foundation is having its 8th Annual Jigsaw Puzzle Tournament.  There is an entry fee for each person in the adult and student divisions. In 2011, there was a record number of participants, 110 people on over 50 teams, and in 2012 it is anticipated even more.

The building is empty and the books are gone, leaving room for a community celebration and art show that features 50 local artists, hands-on art activities, food, music and more. Pieces inspired by library spaces and materials will range from paintings to oversize installations to live performances.

When Matthew, Jimmy and Douglas Bleier got dressed today, they donned candy cane stripes and Santa hats before heading to the Bethlehem Area Public Library. When they arrived, they were greeted by elves and fairies surrounded by cotton candy clouds and a gumdrop mountain. A multicolored maze wound through the room for children to follow in a life-size version of the board game Candy Land.

PITTSFIELD -- Miniature golf enthusiasts will have bookcases and stairs, instead of windmills and water hazards, to putt through in February when the city’s public library is transformed into an indoor mini-golf course for a fundraiser to help improve literacy in the Berkshires.
