Carded catalog: Library hosts beer festival

Carded catalog: Library hosts beer festival | Cha-Ching | Scoop.it

This Saturday, the Indian Valley Public Library in Telford will be hopping with hops-lovers. The popular, but financially struggling repository is holding a “brews for books” fundraiser. It’s not the first time the library has allowed alcohol into the stacks. The last few years, the library has been holding wine-tastings in the fall, and it has organized smaller beer festivals in the past. “There’s something really nice about walking around the library with a glass of wine or beer,” said Lisa Lombardo, one of the organizers. “It seems like a contradiction, but it’s a nice one.”

Ads coming soon to Toronto Public Library date-due slips

Commercial advertising in libraries is so “uncommon,” according to a report from the city’s chief librarian, that “examples of policies and practices are difficult to find.” But Mississauga and Calgary both sell date-due slip ads.

“It doesn’t tend to get, shall we say, high notice, but it does put a message into hundreds of thousands of hands very inexpensively,” said Mississauga library services director Don Mills.

NY Library To Adopt Ad-Supported Toilet Paper

NY Library To Adopt Ad-Supported Toilet Paper | Cha-Ching | Scoop.it

Toilet paper printed with advertisements will appear in the bathrooms of the Port Chester-Rye Brook, NY, Public Library in October, according to The Journal News. Venues that use the paper receive it for free, making it a potentially attractive way for cash-strapped libraries to reduce spending. (Advertisers pay $99 for 20,000 advertisements that appear on approximately 160 rolls.) It may sound silly, but little things add up: According to EducationBug, the library must stock enough toilet paper for 180,183 annual visitors (plus a staff of 15). Plugging that figure into Kimberly-Clark’s professional use calculator yields more than 36,000 cases, meaning the library could be saving $70,000 per year or more on the deal.

Foundation turns cupcake contest into fundraiser | Cha-Ching | Scoop.it

Helaine Bowles, outreach and volunteer coordinator, who called the first local contest “a fun thing to do,” said she had hoped that maybe 20 would enter the contest, and perhaps a hundred residents would show up to see — and taste — the winning entries. Surprise! “We didn’t expect what we got. It was huge!” Bowles said. “We had 300 people and 36 entries!” Terry Baldwin won the top prize with champagne cupcakes topped with cotton candy frosting.
