An afternoon tea fundraiser event was held at the Rochester Public Library on Saturday, May 4, 2013. Several afternoon tea gatherings are being held in conjunction with the library's sixth annual Purse and Jewelry Market, open from May 6 through May 11. "We have to do these kinds of things to keep the doors open," said library director Terri Gallagher.
The Brooklyn Public Library is hosting “Bike the Branches,” a day-long bike tour through BPL’s network of 60 neighborhood libraries, on Saturday, May 11 (rain date: May 18). Proceeds will support Brooklyn library services, including programming, technology and collections. Riders set their own route and pace, although BPL will offer suggested routes that focus on the waterfront, literary history and library architecture. Select branches along the way will offer programing and activities, including music, magic shows and a transportation workshop.
Nonprofits everywhere are challenged to engage board members to solicit support and donations but let’s be real, that’s a really hard thing to do! Arming your board with the right tools can make all the difference: clear understanding of the fundraising expectation, knowledge about your organization’s cause and mission, and the confidence to pull-off “the ask.”
Many runners turned up to participate in the 20th annual Love Your Libraries 5K on Saturday morning in Circle Park. Sponsored by UT's Graduate Student Senate, the Love Your Libraries 5K has been around for 21 years. The event is held each year to raise money libraries around campus to purchase new books, equipment and electronics. -Leslie Ecklund
The Bonner Springs City Library Board organizes the biannual event to support the library, with this event’s goal to fund the “Imagination Destination” series of arts and sciences programming for children and youth at the library. The event again will take place at the Lake of the Forest clubhouse and will include a dinner, musical entertainment and live and silent auctions. The theme for this year’s event is “Reach for the Stars.” Funds raised allow the library to partner with local arts and science organizations to support a series of educational and cultural programs. Oscar Gittemeier, a library professional in Atlanta, has put together a 2013 calendar featuring some of Atlanta's queer literary devotees and their allies. The calendar is called “Libraries Are Such A Drag” and all proceeds from its sale will go to the Georgia Library Association's Beard Scholarship. The calendar can be purchased at local Decatur coffee shop Java Monkey and will be available on Amazon Dec. 1.
On Saturday, Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. the library is holding a Portrait Fundraiser with Lifetouch Photography. When you book a 15-minute sitting for $30 you will receive an 8 x 10 portrait and the option to purchase other prints. And $20 of the fee goes to support the Banff Public Library. FITCHBURG — Public libraries are not just buildings with books in them. Teachers will tell you that libraries are not only important for their students but also for the community. Two retired teachers, Frances Marshall and Jane Canciellieri, are doing what they can to keep the Fitchburg Public Library current by knitting and donating scarves, mittens and hats to the Friends of Fitchburg Public Library's Nancy Project. On Nov. 26, the library will host the annual hand-knit Scarf Sale with hundreds of knitted goods available. The sale will buy books and DVDs, needed equipment and subscriptions, and help with library events and projects. -Lynne Klaft
Bingo, live music, food and prizes will make one Fort Smith fundraiser break away from the pack, said one official.The Fort Smith Public Library’s annual Black Tie Bingo fundraiser will be held from 7-10 p.m. Nov. 10 and will give area residents and visitors a chance to support the library, said Cindy Long, endowment director for the library. -Scott Smith

Local residents can show off their artistic skills and help the Linton Public Library raise money at the same time with the Pumpkin Decorating contest. "The library wants to invite people to celebrate the season in a fun and creative way," Library Director Jamie Tyner explained. Each entry will be numbered with a corresponding jar and patrons vote on the entries by dropping change in the jars. Each cent will be counted as a vote. Tyner noted patrons can vote as many times as they would like. The proceeds from the voting will then go to the library to help with the summer reading programs for all ages, and to purchase books for the library. -Sabrina Westfall
Elizabethtown Public Library invites everyone to attend the fourth annual Craft Fair at the Library on Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13. “This year is the greatest fair we have had to date,” said Outreach Services Coordinator Bethleen Bradford. We have more than forty vendors with a tremendous variety of crafts, home sales vendors, and even cash for gold. People will be able to shop all over the Library, win prizes, and help the Library and local businesses.” Items for sale include handcrafted Polish pottery and Baltic amber set in sterling silvery, clay ornaments, upcycled crafts and clothing, Vintage maps and books given new life as note cards, handmade solid perfume, herbal cleaning products, hand-crocheted and knitted market bags, shawls, scarves, baby blankets and booties, afghans, dishcloths and potholders, bags and pillows with animal faces, handcrafted jewelry, trees of life interchangeable pendants, jars of hope, candles, greeting cards, fiber art, and so much more.

The 2013 Chair-ity Fundraiser to benefit the Safety Harbor Public Library Foundation is entering its final week, and according to officials, it’s shaping up to be a very successful event. People have been flocking to the library for weeks to place their purchased tickets in the bags that correspond to their favorite chairs, which have been decorated and donated to the library by area artists and residents.

A potential disaster may turn out to be a blessing for an often-struggling nonprofit. Operators of the Henry Miller Memorial Library plan to sell off the valuable wood of a 500-year-old coastal redwood tree that toppled during heavy rains in December. The tree just missed the stage and fell onto the parking lot. The rare wood — its value is elevated is by its age — and the tree's historic significance could net up to $200,000, the library's operators said. (video)

CENTRAL FALLS – A year after receiving an unexpected donation from Alec Baldwin to help keep its doors open, the Central Falls Adams Memorial Library received another generous donation from the actor on Monday.
A new study from Charity Dynamics and the Nonprofit Donor Engagement Benchmark Study - as well as the hot off the presses Donor Perspectives Study from Blackbaud - come to the same conclusions this week. The findings aren’t surprising but are certainly worth remembering as we go into fundraising season.
NEWMARKET — The Friends of the Newmarket Library will be wrapping gifts on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Newmarket Public Library, 1 Elm St., Newmarket. The cost is $1 per present wrapped. In addition to the gift-wrapping, there will be a book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; story hour; plus Christmas movies will be shown while Mom and Dad are having presents wrapped.
McMurrayites came out in droves to support the Fort McMurray Public Library’s 18th annual Frosty Frolics fundraiser. Raising $12,000 for library services, $6,600 of which came from the three-day silent auction, more than 1,100 people came out to support the library and partake in family-friendly activities like snow cones, face painting and craft stations.
The Schoolcraft Community Library's first Jubilee of Trees has been more successful than imagined. Businesses, organizations, families and individuals since Nov. 16 have been bringing in the tabletop trees all decorated with a theme of their choice. Each entry costs $10 and for 25 cents a vote library patrons cast ballots for their favorite tree or trees. -Tom Haroldson
In an effort to benefit the Massachusetts Library Association (MLA) while showcasing the diverse men and women who promote library services to the state’s teens and children, the Youth Services Section of the MLA will soon begin selling the “Tattooed Youth Librarian Calendar.” -Matt Enis
On August 1, Google quietly launched Google Wallet for the Web – and the technology has the possibility of transforming online and mobile fundraising as we’ know it. Described simply, donors can sign up for a Google Wallet account, enter and save their credit card information, and then donate to any nonprofit (or purchase from any online store) that has a Google Wallet merchant account with only two clicks of a mouse (or two taps on a tablet). Your contact and financial information is stored in the cloud and your donation history is easily accessible in your Google Wallet account. What makes this even more interesting is that if you have an Android mobile device, you can then take your mobile wallet with you on your smartphone for point-of-sale transactions that occur offline.
