In Hancock, NY an Islamic community that sits on 80 acres of land has decided to form its own government. They call their community: The Town of Islamberg. They have their own mayor, deputy mayor and five town council members. None of them are elected, of course.
They even boast that their “town” provides departments of education, medical, finance and land development services.
This Islamic compound has truly become a city-state. Though not recognized as a legitimate township by the City of Hancock, this Islamic community nevertheless enforces its own laws on the “citizens” within its borders. They do so by using the iron fist of Sharia law.

John was 53 when the bad news hit: His department was being moved offshore. Since joining the company eight years earlier, he had worked his way up to a solid position in middle management with a decent salary and great benefits. Now, he was out of a job.
Having spent his entire adult life in corporate positions, he knew he could go job hunting. But this was the fifth time he’d had a “secure” position shot out from under him, whether through downsizing, restructuring or other reorganization. With a wife and two teenagers to clothe and feed, he was no longerwilling to trust his future to this game of corporate roulette. It was time to go into business for himself.

Facebook looks completely different than it did a year ago, so it shouldn’t be surprising that marketing on the social network has also changed a great deal.
The biggest difference is Timeline, the photo-heavy redesign that Facebook herded brands into in March. Though there have been conflicting reports about Timeline’s effect on brand engagement, marketers are realizing that Timeline may not be more effective — but it definitely is different.
However, Timeline’s not the only catalyst for the changing marketing ecosystem on Facebook. Another is Facebook’s financial situation: We all know the company is under huge pressure from Wall Street to figure out a winning formula for advertising on the platform. The other big trend is driven by how advertisers view Facebook. With about 133 million users in the U.S., the social network has a potential audience bigger than the Super Bowl’s. Though GM has punctured Facebook’s air of inevitability, most advertisers haven’t lost faith enough to drop advertising on the platform wholesale.
Saddled by a wave of online faux pas, marketers struggle to break through the wall of consumer criticism...
Social media? For too many brands, it might feel more like anti-social media.
It’s no secret that the rush of consumers and advertisers to Facebook and Twitter has made it ever easier for the masses to be heard—and for brands to mess up.
The minefield of customer commentary has been a part of the conversation since the dawn of social media, and the various high-profile brand blowups over the years have been well-documented. Considering that so many marketers have learned the hard way that consumers have a voice—and they’re going to use it—one might think that brands would have gotten savvy by now. And yet, a surprising number seem to have still missed the memo: Tread lightly—you’re just a visitor here.

Every day we are thankful for our troops, but November in particular is a special month for our country's men and women in uniform, both past and present. Not only is it Military Family Appreciation Month, but it' was also Veterans Day on November 11.
So many of our lives have been touched, and some forever changed, by a special soldier. Check out our list of 20 reasons to love our men and women in the military:
Let's support our veterans. If you are hiring or know of any job openings, post them on your Facebook or Twitter profile.
If you're mustering out of the U.S. military, you should put Pittsburgh, Pa., at the top of your shortlist of the best places for veterans to start civilian life, new research shows. Pittsburgh winters too cold for you? Then Phoenix in Arizona's Valley of the Sun may be more to your liking.
These cities top a list of the 10 U.S. metro areas that offer America's most recent veterans the best job and education opportunities and provide a higher quality of life in an affordable location. Other cities on the list were Dallas; Cleveland; Atlanta; Warren, Mich.; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio; and St Louis.
Facebook is dominant as a source of traffic for online retailers, and shoppers who enter retail sites via Facebook browse more pages and make more total purchases, but shoppers driven to those sites via Pinterest spend more money, according to an analysis of nearly 700 million shopping sessions on leading U.S. retail sites by ecommerce personalization provider RichRelevance.
5StarControl has applauds Ryan Ruud for making the case for a local social marketing identity. Reputation management site 5StarControl wrote that local businesses are going to blossom with social media marketing – the new local business marketing approach.
Consumer psychology, according to Ruud’s article, predisposes customers to shop locally when brand recognition is identified with locally-owned business markets. By connecting consumer brand loyalty to local business markets, small businesses are taking advantage of an invaluable local, social resource. To support this, he cites MainStay Salire’s study, “Social Media ROI: Quantifying the Benefits of Social Media,” which reports that the use of locally defined social media content in marketing can create ten times the consumer exposure over the use of corporate media strategies.
EL PASO COUNTY - The Waldo Canyon Fire near Colorado Springs has forced more residents to evacuate their homes on Wednesday.
Shifting winds Wednesday continue to cause problems for firefighters.
The entire town of Cystola is under a mandatory evacuation as of Wednesday afternoon. North of the Air Force Academy to the Douglas County line and west to Interstate 25 is under a pre-evacuation notice.
The Waldo Canyon Fire has already forced more than 32,000 people out of their homes and destroyed structures on Tuesday. On Wednesday, crews hope to protect Highway 24 and prevent the fire from moving northeast and east.
I believe it is important for small business owners to understand Facebook and all social media is not your 24/7 sales agent. Social media is about building relationships; it is not a substitute for hard work and a quick buck.
Poll: Facebook ads not working on most users By Salvador Rodriguez June 5, 2012, 11:21 a.m.
A new poll shows the vast majority of Facebook users say ads on the social network have never led them to make a purchase.
Four out of five Facebook users said neither advertisements nor comments on the social network have ever led them to buy a product or service, according to the poll by Reuters/Ipsos.
The poll comes at a terrible time for Facebook as the company, which just went public last month, struggles with concerns that it hasn't figured out how to monetize its more than 900-million users effectively. Read more . . .
