Monday, April 23: Using a SB with special needs students

~ Angie Scarano-Iuorio and Valia Reinsalu showed  us how to use a SB as an assistive technology for special needs students including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Both women are on the assistive Technology Team in the Special Education Department for the Toronto District School Board. The team follows the belief that “all students, not just those with special needs, can benefit from the use of assistive technology,” to guide their efforts. Using communication methods including a robust website, newsletter, Facebook Fan Page, and a Twitter account, the AT Team strives to keep teachers, students, and parents informed of software tips, training dates, resources, and success stories."

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an educational approach to teaching, learning, and assessment that guides instructors to reach and teach all learners by utilizing flexible instructional materials, techniques, and strategies.

"A universally designed curriculum is designed from the outset to meet the needs of the greatest number of users, making costly, time-consuming, and after-the-fact changes to curriculum unnecessary"(Center for Applied Special Technologies, www.cast.org)

There's nothing yet on IWB's. Perhaps you'll join the wiki and suggest some contributions to that page.

Project-Based Learning project using Trackstar and Notebook software | T.Lucas

Project-Based Learning project using Trackstar and Notebook software | T.Lucas | CEET Meet (Apr'2012): SMART Boards & Notebook software ~ Sue Hellman | Scoop.it

"This is a Project-Based Learning Project where students are given a central question to research and answer. The goal is for the students to then demonstrate their learning by creating some type of project displaying their learning, which, in this case will be a “Notebook” file for use with our school’s SmartBoard interactive whiteboards. The act of the student creating the means to display his or her learning is key to the project-based learning project."

A sample project notebook file can be downloaded from a link at the bottom of the page. This work was done by grade 2's!!!

Teaching Physics with a SMART Board

Cindy Schwarz, Professor of Physics at Vassar College shows the use of a SMART Board in the undergraduate science curriculum. She's demonstrating generic Notebook tools rather than specific science applications:

~ saving lecture notes; making some notes ahead of time using Notbook software on home or office computer

during lectures being able to move back and forth between solved questions in a file (no erasures) & pull up old files on the fly

~ handwriting recognition (changing from handwriting to text)

~ export class notes as pdf which can be posted in LMS -- students spend less time scribbling notes because they can print out what prof wrote as lecture progressed

~ over-writing a PPT with digital ink; saving original ppt + new notes to a new Notebook file

~ screencapturing a webpage on the fly; adding the page to a Notebook file and saving this with notes to NB file

~ working with a spreadsheet

~ copy and paste back and forth between word or PPT and NB

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives | CEET Meet (Apr'2012): SMART Boards & Notebook software ~ Sue Hellman | Scoop.it
A digital library containing Java applets and activities for K-12 mathematics...

"Learning and understanding mathematics, at every level, requires student engagement. Mathematics is not, as has been said, a spectator sport. Too much of current instruction fails to actively involve students. One way to address the problem is through the use of manipulatives, physical objects that help students visualize relationships and applications.'

Problems orienting an old board/Diagnostic test

Problems orienting an old board/Diagnostic test | CEET Meet (Apr'2012): SMART Boards & Notebook software ~ Sue Hellman | Scoop.it

This Q&A came up during the Meet:

~ Q

Straight after orienting our SB, even with 20 points, the alignment is so poor that it is impossible to write on it. EG: if you try to write 'A',  the right-hand line and horizontal bar will not connect with the first line, and we can'e enter text in the cells of a table, plot points on a graph, and so on. Drag and drop is usually OK, but for anything requiring precision, no chance! The IT technicians blame it on the SMARTboards and say there is no way of improving the situation. (After saying we are not orienting them properly, which we totally refute!) It's not a case of losing orientation because of doors banging, walls and ceilings moving etc; the boards just never seem to align properly. It might be OK at the left hand edge, but by the right hand edge, it's a couple of centimetres out! It's very frustrating, as of all the subjects taught in college, maths is the one that can use the IWB most effectively. Most other departments just use their boards as projection screens - a real waste of money!

What can we do???

~ A

My advice is to ask your Principal for a new one. If money is an issue, and you've tried everything else (which it sounds like you have) get to know your board and work around it. You can easily conduct a diagnostic test which will show you where your board is damaged (probably due to age) and then work around it. After conducting the test (demonstration below) I worked around the 'kinks' in my board until my school was able to buy a new one. I know how frustrating it can be!

This article is about how to orient your board and how to conduct a diagnostic test. Why would you want to do this? Because you work with your SMART board every day, so you need to be aware of its ware and tare. Follow these steps:
1.Align your board.
2.Go to that gallery and select large grid.
3.Trace every line.
4.Use your camera tool to create a screen capture of your results. When boards age the common place for them to be off alignment (squiggle) is in the corners of the board.
5.Print this and keep it as a record.
6.Check with you SMART wholesaler in terms of your warranty.
The video demonstration below has no sound.

Interactive Whiteboards

Interactive Whiteboards | CEET Meet (Apr'2012): SMART Boards & Notebook software ~ Sue Hellman | Scoop.it

"Some teachers of the deaf like the SMART Board because they don't have to use a digital pen to write on the board, hindering their signing. Some of the more portable systems like the Mimio and the eBeam are good for more transient classrooms. The ActivBoard has a lot of built-in templates and resources; but there are probably more online resources for the SMART Board (at this time).'
