FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs that build not only science and technology skills and interests, but also self-confidence, leadership, and life skills.
Royce Allister's insight:

I've worked with my robotics team over the past week on the code for the robot and ideas for the robot. This includes vision targeting, running our mecanum drive, and setting up multiple robot interfaces so our electrical guys could test out the pneumatics. While it's not the hardest, it's definitely a fun project to work on. Our vision targeting is just starting to develop, and we'll be working on it more and more as time goes on. As for our other subteams, they've been working on prototyping, and I've programmed motors to run for them when they want to test their prototypes.

High School Graduation: Gym

Gym graduation requirement progress

Royce Allister's insight:

I've completed my 5 hours I set out to complete of gym. I went to the weight room five times, and came out with five hours done. I am now able to talk to Coach Hutt and have him sign off my waiver.

Also, I'm planning on submitting my letter to Mr. Peters about getting my other half of a gym credit waived due to my schedule being full by the end of this week.

Royce Allister's insight:

I've successfully applied to the CollegeWeekLive scholarship! This is a $1,000 scholarship opportunity that I wanted to complete. This took a very long time, as I had to create a Twitter account and make a CollegeWeekLive account.

I also applied to the Abercrombie & Fitch Anti-Bullying Scholarship, which took a very long time to apply. It included an essay about my anti-bullying efforts and all of my information, including my birthday, address, and current school attended. Awesome!

Boeing: Internships & Co-ops | CE Log | Scoop.it
Discover your opportunity to rise up to the challenges of The Boeing Company. The talented professionals we employ on a wide range of contracts and programs will help change the face of our company, our country, and the world.
Royce Allister's insight:

I talked with mentors on my FIRST Robotics team. All of them said that I should look up the scholarships and internships online, and that there were a lot of Boeing internships available, to high school and college students. I also ended up working with them on programming and electrical throughout the day on January 9th and 13th on the robot. This allowed me to make connections with them and be more likely to get a recommendation from them if needed.

Fluke Corporation: Fluke Electronics, Biomedical, Calibration and Networks

Fluke Corporation: Fluke Electronics, Biomedical, Calibration and Networks | CE Log | Scoop.it
Fluke Corporation is the world leader in the manufacture, distribution and service of electronic test tools, biomedical equipment and networking solutions.
Royce Allister's insight:

I've managed to talk with my mentors -- Mr. Ebert in particular -- about both their job and job/internship opportunites at Boeing and Fluke. This was over a two-day period, as I talked both on Saturday and on Wednesday. They were more than happy to refer me to their company websites and tell me about the different job opportunities available. They also had some exciting stories about coworkers, ranging from stupid mistakes to great people who worked on an interesting project. One that sticks out is about a coworker who worked on halogen lights -- he had a method that lit them up very quickly, but he couldn't control how much they lit up, and they eventually turned off due to overheating. Interesting stories.

Royce Allister's insight:

I applied for a summer internship at Boing. It took a while to navigate around the Boeing website, as I needed to create my resume, job application, and profile on their jobs website. In the end, however, I submitted my application. Although I'm not expecting a reply back for a few weeks, I'm confident now that I've submitted a job application, I'll be able to do it any time.

High School Management

High School and Beyond graduation requirements.

Royce Allister's insight:

I ended up getting a lot of things set up for my graduation. I talked with Mr. Peters, and it turns out that I am set for my PE being waived. All I need to do is verify that my schedule is full and that I am unable to take a gym class, then fill that out on a paper and give it to him.

I also sent my transcripts from Everett Commnity College to UW Bothell and WSU (UW Seatle didn't need them).

Success!

Scholarships - National Society of High School Scholars

Scholarships - National Society of High School Scholars | CE Log | Scoop.it
Royce Allister's insight:

The Scholarships page on the NSHSS website gives me all the NSHSS scohlarships that I can appy for. I have found that the CollegeWeekLive Scholarships for NSHSS Members is the scholarship to go for -- it's not as complicated as I anticipated, and I think that I'll have at least a chance of earning it. Also, the Office of Naval Research Scholars scholarships are GREAT for me -- I'll be able to earn anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 in scholarships from one application, with a minimum of 10 being handed out! I'm confident that when I apply for these, I'll have a shot of earning them.

Also looked at http://www.usfirst.org/about/scholarships/scholarship-opportunities scholarships. Quite a few have "financial need" requirements...
