Cedexis Saves Load Times with Billions of Tests per Day

Cedexis Saves Load Times with Billions of Tests per Day | CDN Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Learn how one company's automated CDN and ISP testing enhances traffic delivery for streaming video and more.

"Our goal is fairly modest," said Robert Malnati, vice president of marketing for Cedexis, somewhat tongue in cheek. "We want to make the internet better for every user."

Cedexis and its Openmix service unification attempts to automate the optimization of end-user experiences across vendors, from content delivery networks (CDNs) and off-net points of presence (POPs) to on-net cloud and public/private data centers.

"Openmix sits between network core and the end-user," said Malnati. "We use 48 nodes deployed around the world, across a variety of data centers, to confirm real-time optimization. At its core, Openmix is a load balancer."

An end-user device first downloads Radar, written in JavaScript, and then requests objects from a variety of locations. So is Cedexis using a peer-to-peer arrangement to optimize content delivery? No, because the test objects only come from the pre-defined nodes, and no information is passed from one client to another.

"It's not P2P, but a measurement of how bandwidth and object optimization can shave seconds off a page load," said Malnati. Openmix is akin to an automated DSL Reports test run.

"Except we do this billions of times per day," Malnati said.

nanoCDN could change live multi-screen economics

nanoCDN could change live multi-screen economics | CDN Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Broadpeak’s nanoCDN solution will be launched commercially early this year, giving telcos and cable operators the opportunity to reduce bandwidth consumption and simultaneously increase the QoE for customers watching live streaming video on multiscreen devices. This product has the potential to change the economics of streaming but until now there have been only limited details available about how it works and what it can achieve. Broadpeak has just started releasing more details.

Marché CDN 2012 : Activité intense pour Akamai | CDN Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Akamai Launches Cloud-Based Online Video Ad Integration Services

Akamai Launches Cloud-Based Online Video Ad Integration Services | CDN Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

In a bid to re-architect and improve upon how online video ads are inserted, this morning Akamai is announcing Ad Integration Services. With Ad Integration Services, online video ads are dynamically inserted in the cloud and delivered using Akamai's Sola Sphere delivery network, eliminating the typical client-side process of the video player calling for the ads.

As Kurt Michel, director of product marketing for media solutions, explained to me last week, the traditional process often diminishes the user experience. That's because the content itself and the ad are competing for last-mile bandwidth as the video player transitions from the former to the latter.  This contention can lead to delays, which in turn leads to viewer abandonment (if you've ever waited for an ad to play you know about this).

With Ad Integration Services, the player sees just one video stream, as video ads are dynamically inserted from ad decisioning platforms and ad networks in both linear and on-demand programming, across connected devices. Another benefit of Ad Integration Services is that it relieves online video platforms and other video players of the need to constantly be updated to handle changes in ad delivery. With Ad Integration Services, player providers simply integrate a lightweight, IAB-compliant SDK which supports measurement beaconing for the ads.

Akamai Moves to Optimize TV

Akamai Moves to Optimize TV | CDN Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

The company thinks it can clean up the cluttered landscape of apps that augment TV shows.

Akamai, the Web optimization company whose servers deliver up to 30 percent of Web traffic, is setting its sights on creating a TV technology that can detect what a person is watching and stream secondary content to a smartphone or tablet in near real-time.

The aim, the company says, is to take today’s fast-growing but chaotic landscape of TV “companion” apps – such as ones delivering athlete stats to people watching the Olympics, or crime-fighting details to CSI junkies—and make it easier to create and see such additional content.

Life on the edge with ESI

Life on the edge with ESI | CDN Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

One of the more popular tricks to lower the latency for web applications is to use edge cache. The idea is to cache JavaScript, CSS and images in servers that are close to the user (i.e. the edge of the Internet). So the latency to access these resources will be much lower.

But what about the HTML page? Normally there are many information captured in a HTML page. Some (e.g. news article) are cacheable. Some (e.g. personal information) are not. That makes it hard to cache the entire HTML page. And that’s where Edge Side Include (ESI) can help.

Case Study: The Google SDN WAN

Case Study: The Google SDN WAN | CDN Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

How has this pioneering deployment shaped up over two years? Jim Wanderer, director of engineering, platforms networking, Google, reveals all.

There's intense curiosity about Google's inter-datacenter SDN [Software Defined Networking] deployment using OpenFlow. That's hardly surprising given that OpenFlow is so recent and has, on the one hand, been unfairly dismissed by some as an academic exercise yet to bear fruit, while on the other we have here an example of not only a large-scale deployment by a giant among Cloud service providers, but also one that has already clocked up two years of operational experience.

How Akamai’s New CEO, Tom Leighton, Hopes to Speed up Mobile Computing

How Akamai’s New CEO, Tom Leighton, Hopes to Speed up Mobile Computing | CDN Breakthroughs | Scoop.it

Co-founder—and now CEO—Tom Leighton plans data-prioritization trials with Ericsson and massive use of distributed devices for transmitting video.

He says his company, which has 119,000 servers and delivers between 15 and 30 percent of the Web’s traffic, is working on technologies that will lead to services that prioritize different kinds of mobile Web traffic, use distributed devices for storing or “caching” video content, and compress photos selectively depending on what device you are using.
