Targeted by bullies, teen hangs himself in schoolyard (RT @colbymelvin: Targeted by bullies, teen hangs himself in schoolyard http://t.co/y0I2TfXR)
Catherine Brown's insight:

1. What are some reasons that bullies tend to pick on people with different customs and beliefs? Why might the bullies find it easier to do this?

2. Why do the victims let the bullies drive them to depression and suicide?

do the bullies realize they are going that far?

3. What are some ideas we could get to raise awaabout towards bullying and it's effects?

Bullies target people that are diverse from others because they reject the fact that these people are not like them. They think that bullying someone who is homosexual or believe in different religions is acceptable, because they think that it is wrong to be the way they are, and it was their choice. Victims let bullies get to them because they have heard the mean words that the bullies say so many times that they start believing it themselves. Most humans naturally want people to like them. The targets of bullies might not be able to stand all the harsh words and actions, and think that the only solution is suicide. I think that some bullies know exactly what they are doing , but some might not know that what they are saying is effecting their target so much. Some probably have a feeling like what they are doing is hurting their victim, but try to pretend like it's not, and try not to think about it. I think a way to raise awareness about bullying is to expose kids to all types of bullying, because alot of times they don't know that what they are doing is bullying. Also, I think kids should learn about bullying at a young age instead of waiting into middle school and high school years, that way they would not have already grown a habit by the time they learn about it.

* Most people naturally want people to like them, so when the victims hear things like " nobody likes you" or " we hate you" it greatly hurts their self-confidence.

I think your response is perfect. As I was reading your answers, I was thinking to myself that is what I would've said. I completely agree that we need to teach kids about bullying as early in their lives as possible. As we all know, it is easier to learn something the younger you are. As you said, children most likely already picked up the bullying habit before anyone ever tried to stop them.

In my opinion, these boys did this because they thought that they would become popular, and they would gain attention. i think that the seventh grade boys posted this to be funny. This action was a mistake! If they thought that there was any humor in this, they were just plain desprite for attention. There is nothing funny about this. The boys probably didn't have an inspiration to this horrible act. My response to this is NOT laughter. My response is anger and sadness.

Carter Griffin's comment, January 25, 2013 7:51 AM
I believe that these boys bullied this woman to amuse their peers and gain popularity among their friends. I think they probably uploaded the video to YouTube for the same reason. They thought they would be famous for bullying this woman, and they are, but not in a good way. These kids should be ashamed for what they did. This is just plain cruel.
TrippVaughn's curator insight, January 28, 2013 8:00 PM

I think the boys were insecure and wanted to become popular. They probably were insecure about their weight, the amount they sweat, and their hearing. They also thought that doing this would make them popular and cool.

They posted the video on youtube because the boys probably thought that doing this would make them cool and popular. If they spread the word about it the boys thought that it would make them more popular.

The boys'motivation was to feel better about themselves and to gain attention by becoming popular.

This article horrified and sickened me while it brightened my day at the end. it is just shocking that anybody would do such a crime, especially to a grammother. The way Max Sidorov responded is just amazing. he raised massive amounts of money for Mrs. Klein. Finnaly, raising money for Max Sidorov is a great idea. Giving kindness back to the giver is the best way to respond to anything like this.
