How Google Earth and drones are saving elephants in Africa

How Google Earth and drones are saving elephants in Africa | Cartoonists.. creative artists | Scoop.it

Conservationists are using drones, night-vision goggles and Google Earth to halt the decline of Kenya's wildlife.

Standing in his flatbed truck, Marc Goss touches "take off" on his iPad 3 and a $300 AR Drone whirs into the air as his latest weapon to fight elephant poachers around Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve.

"It's an arms race," said Goss, whose green khaki clothing shields him from thorny acacia branches in the 30,000 hectares of savannah he protects. "We're seeing larger numbers of poachers."

Drones are basically the future of conservation; a drone can do what 50 rangers can do.

James Hardy, Mara North Conservancy

Besides the almost 2 foot-long drone, Goss and other conservationists are using night-vision goggles and Google Earth to halt the decline of Kenya's wildlife, which helps attract $1.2 billion a year in tourism. With elephant ivory sold for as much as $US1000 a kilogram in Hong Kong, Kenya is facing its most serious threat from poaching in almost a quarter of a century, according to the United Nations....

Urge Conservation Police to Protect Wildlife From Poisoning | Cartoonists.. creative artists | Scoop.it
African Vultures are currently being poisoned by poachers because they lead conservation police to the bodies of deceased endangered animals. Poachers poison the carcasses of rhinoceros and elephants in the hopes the vultures eat them and then die.
Greer Noble's insight:

Africa adios, it looks like. Why can't they SEE that they're killing the goose that lays the golden egg? We're killing our planet. Without nature life will cease to exist on earth as we know it. HUGE rewards should be offered to expose offenders. Come on Bill Gates.. where are you now?

It's a start.. but what a pity it's not IVORY too!!!

Come on China, follow in Thailand's footsteps and BAN IVORY!!!!

China and Vietnam's demand for ivory, according to statistics, are the main countries responsible for the escalation in African elephant poaching. Do you really want to go down in history as being primarily responsible for..

*the extinction of this magnificent mammal?

*for upsetting the balance of nature forever, causing the domino effect of other species?

*and thereby threatening the very existence of mankind?

Greer Noble's insight:

Whoever you are, I see you fancy yourself as a macho army guy in your camouflage so why not put your hunting skills to real use and hunt poachers and terrorists. If you get your jollies from killing poor defenceless animals why not really prove who you are and rid the earth of this vermin, those who destroy lives and peoples livelihood. Rhino mind their own business if left in peace. I've never heard of rhino stalking humans with evil intent! Shooting poachers and murderers will give you far better thrills AND you'll be HELPING mankind, not destroying nature, God's gift to mankind!

South African businessman behind elephant poisonings

South African businessman behind elephant poisonings | Cartoonists.. creative artists | Scoop.it

Zimbabwean police are bringing their investigations into the deaths of at least 64 elephants by cyanide poisoning in the Hwange National Park to an end....

Police revealed that the poachers would mix up a combination of cyanide, salt and water. This would then be poured onto salt licks at watering holes known to be frequented by elephants. At other watering holes the poachers would dig holes and place containers containing the deadly mixture into the holes.

The technique was so effective at killing elephants that when the poachers took police to the sites that had been contaminated there were bodies of elephants with small tusks still intact because it wasn’t worth the effort to take the tusks, The poachers were being paid as little as $700 for 9 tusks....

Via Wildlife Margrit
Greer Noble's insight:

This is 'Robin Hood' in reverse.. here we have 'robbing the poor to pay the rich'. TOURISM is the 'goose that lays the golden eggs!' Poachers are killing tourism. Tourism brings much needed work and, in many instances, funds governments. There should be huge rewards that result in the arrest of poachers. And even bigger rewards leading to the arrest of the evil perpetrators BEHIND the poachers.

Wildlife Margrit's curator insight, September 20, 2013 1:50 PM

Let's hope they really make an example of these guys!

The recent poisoning in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe is being called "an ecological disaster" as not only 64 elephants died, but lions, buffalo, jackal and who knows what other animals and birds drinking the poisoned water.

Haley van Zante's curator insight, September 27, 2013 7:47 AM

Zimbabwean police have been investigating into the deaths of at least 64 elephants. The elephants were posioned by cyanide. The person behind all of this is a South African businessman, and has been doing this since 2009. My question is, how could someone live everyday knowing that they have killed an innocent animal?
