Why Nokia Is Calling “Here” Here, The Curious Rebranding Of Their Maps Product

Why Nokia Is Calling “Here” Here, The Curious Rebranding Of Their Maps Product | Cartographie XY | Scoop.it

As Nokia tries to separate out its mapping business and make it a standalone entity earning more than 1 billion euros per year, it has stripped its name entirely out of the unit. This past week, the company said it would take its name out of all navigation products and instead brand them with the word “HERE” — as in HERE Maps, HERE Drive and HERE Transit.

Yes, it does sound a bit strange. The real reason likely has to do with the fact that partners like Amazon and Mozilla, which license Nokia data for their hardware, might be touchy about having “Nokia” branding inside their products.

But in bureacro-speak, Nokia’s reasons are a bit different.

“HERE is a name that I think signifies what I call an ethos in cartography. HERE is about a sense of location,” said Michael Halbherr, the Nokia executive who oversees the company’s location and commerce unit, in an interview at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week.

“If you look at the brand, it’s the same font and the same color logic,” he said. “There are other companies that do it successfully with Microsoft having the X-Box, Bing and Skype brands.”

With the acquisition of NAVTEQ for $8.1 billion in 2007, the company brought in a licensing business that helped the unit bring in 278 million euros ($364.7 million) in the fourth quarter of last year.

That business handles four out of every five cars with an in-dash navigation system, Halbherr said. It also recently bought Earthmine last year for the company’s 3D-map making software, and partnered with Mozilla to bring location and maps to the Firefox OS.

Glympsing the Rise of the Connected Car

Glympsing the Rise of the Connected Car | Cartographie XY | Scoop.it
Florence Leveel's insight:

I’m not at CES; it’s too much of a zoo (and becoming less important). But one of the most interesting sets of announcement to come out of the show involves the connected car. Both GM and Fordannounced new or updated app developer programs yesterday.

Chrysler, Honda, Lexus/Toyota, Mercedes, BMW and others are also developing telematics systems that allow (to varying degrees) mobile apps and content to be accessed and/or displayed in dash. Most of these carmakers also have voice-controlled systems (for convenience and safety).

The Dirty Little Secret About Location-Targeted Mobile Ads

The Dirty Little Secret About Location-Targeted Mobile Ads | Cartographie XY | Scoop.it

As Sir Martin Sorrell said, location targeting in mobile is the holy grail of marketing. Reaching consumers when they are out and about, on the go, interacting with both the digital and real worlds together can actually fulfill the longstanding goal of ‘right ad, right person, right place, right time’.

Location is a big deal. For the history of digital advertising we’ve basically been targeting on a few things, like content, cookie data and search. The big new data set mobile brings to the table is location—a data set that can be as important at inferring intent, demographics, audience segments and other attributes as any we have seen to date.

Social Isn’t Search: Why Apple Should Think Twice About Foursquare

Who knows what if anything will come of it, but Apple has reportedly been reviewing Foursquare for the past couple of weeks with a view toward a possible partnership or data integration deal. Though the cachet of the Foursquare name might make this idea sound appealing, my sense is that it could only be executed successfully if handled very carefully by Apple. With prominence already given to socially driven results from Yelp, Apple would risk becoming a search service dominated by social content.

On the surface, of course, that doesn’t sound like a bad thing at all. We often talk about the convergence of social, local, and mobile as an inevitable trend with a positive outcome for consumers and businesses. Social features like tips and reviews help consumers make decisions and add value to local services. But that general notion doesn’t mean that all services are created for the same purpose. In fact, Apple probably faces a choice here about whether it wants its mapping service to be thought of as a toy or a tool.
