Company-sponsored demos and seminars enhance orthopedic surgery training.
Gail Zahtz's insight:

Fresh new look by doctor @BittermanJAMB on the pro's of corporate sponsorship in healthcare. As those who follow me know, I am pro-corporate sponsorship, but not pharmaceutical information farming. The key has to be in the point he reminds us on the individual's responsibility to separation (and full disclosure).

Corporate sponsors want their names out there. On the other hand, too many patient and physician groups' information is being unkowingly sold to pharmaceutical companies. (buried in TOC's no-one reads.) An easy line is this:  if there is nothing to hide- make the disclosures easily transparent. If we all do that, then more physicians and other providers can have access to better training opportunities which means better outcomes for all.

How to Cover Up Research Abuse and Intimidate Critics

How to Cover Up Research Abuse and Intimidate Critics | CPHC: Health for Providers, Patients and Caregivers | Scoop.it
Imagine that you lose your only son to suicide in a medical experiment. When you try to get his study records, the university refuses.
Gail Zahtz's insight:

This mentally Ill son's death was preventable.  We must change laws giving parent's of adult children rights to get treatment past 18.  The Unniversity of Minnesota Deparment of Psychiatry pushed a drug study against mother's wishes.  He commited suicide.  The hundreds of physicians involved in this case are reputable, as the author who is a physician and UMP faculty.  If you know me, you know I do not get involved in "politics". The laws for mental health and caregiver rights, the ability of pharmaceuticals and hospitals to use our mentally ill patients as guinea pigs- we must get involved to stop more deaths.  Many homeless and imprisioned young adults are because families have not been able to get help past 18, and we allow studies on living adult mentally ill patients without oversight or rights of parental intervention. Please read this and pass it on.
