The idea that an "Uber for X" model could fit any service proved arrogant, especially for customer-service focused startups.

Customers aren't going to pay 20% more just for the ability to order a service re an app. They will pay more for a higher quality service. The new generation of businesses understand the app is a simply an interface. It's not the business. The people and the high quality service they provide is the most important piece of the business.

Although the peer-to-peer lending market is march smaller than consumer finance and credit card markets, it's expected to grow mostly due to investor interest. I know a couple of folks - not wealthy, but solidly middle class —  who are helping out their friends in this way.

Some great questions in this personal essay about a consumer-based economy.  "The more (money) we make, the more we spend. It’s not that we suddenly need to buy more just because we make more, only that we can, so we do. In fact, it’s quite difficult for us to avoid increasing our standard of living (or at least our rate of spending) every time we get a raise.
