Caricature of Bobby Jindal: Governor of Louisiana and Presidential-hopeful. | Caricatures | Scoop.it

A portrait of Bobby Jindal sparked a controversy (Is Bobby Jindal White?) because the artist deviated from his skin color. Bobby Jindal's skin color is dark-brown (due to his Indian ancestry.) A case-study on the importance of replicating the skin-color in portraits and caricatures (caricatures do provide the artist with some degree of freedom to choose colors and proportions, but a portrait must be a true representation of a person's look.

Caricature/Portrait of Selena Gomez - The Poster: Come and Get it while the Stars Dance. | Caricatures | Scoop.it
Shafali Anand's insight:

I think that this painting has a few points of interest for an artist. 1. The hair. Darker hair is thicker and the single single strands are defined more clearly, than they are done while painting lighter hair. Next, the eyes. Caricaturists often gravitate towards giving big eyes to all their women subjects. Small eyes must remain small, and yet, they shouldn't lose their likeness. Finally the embroidery on the dress...

File:Caricature gillray plumpudding.jpg - Wikimedia Commons | Caricatures | Scoop.it
Shafali Anand's insight:

"The Plumb Pudding in Danger" is one of the most famous caricatures in history. In this artwork you can see William Pitt the Younger PM of Britain at the time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Pitt_the_Younger), wearing his regimental uniform, sitting at a table with Napoleon Bonaparte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleon). They are each carving a large plum pudding on which is a map of the world.

Note the exceptional hatching and cross-hatching done on this caricature. From the view point of a caricaturist, it's interesting to note how the caricaturist James Gillray has exaggerated the difference in their heights, made William Pitt look even taller than he was by adding the upright hat. Also note that the overall treatment of Napoleon makes him look like a little boy (he sits at the edge of his chair, and his face has been made a lot smaller than it was.)

Mark Fredrickson

Mark Fredrickson | Caricatures | Scoop.it
Mark Fredrickson on theispot.com: Mark A. Fredrickson lives in Tucson, Arizona. He attended Tennessee Temple College in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he studied drawing and photography. He continued his education at the University of Arizona.
Shafali Anand's insight:

Mark Fredrickson's work has appeared in the Time Magazine, Business Week, Industry Week,Sports Illustrated, Golf Digest, The Village Voice, Mad Magazine. One of the MAD Magazine covers done by him was included in Time's top 10 magazine covers of 2008.

Another link where you can view his work is: http://www.workbook.com/portfolios/fredrickson

Interestingly, Mark Fredrickson's art spans from children's books to magazine covers and inside art, to fantasy...and even to comic books (once, for the Green Lantern comic...)

What we can learn from him? I guess, everything. From backgrounds to colors, to lights-and-shadows, to textures. Most of his work that I could locate appears to be digital painting.

Vizcarra.info - Caricaturas de gente famosa - caricatures of famous people - La web de Joan Vizcarra | Caricatures | Scoop.it
Shafali Anand's insight:

Scooping once again,

Joan Vizcarra's caricatures glow with an unearthly light. His bold use of colors is unique and so are his exaggerations. He works with contrasting colors and doesn't care a lot about getting those skin-tones right. He is one of the very few caricaturists who exaggerate everything, including the colors. I believe he usually works with the traditional mediums. If you are someone who'd really like to learn how colors can be used to maximize effect, you must look at Vizcarra's fabulous work.

Another point to note: It's extremely rare that you'll find a high- or even medium-resolution picture of his work. What you find on the web is seldom bigger than about twice the thumb-nail images - so you don't really get to see his brush-strokes, which is a pity. Regardless of this, Vizcarra is one of the gurus of Caricatures.

Portfolio of Thomas Fluharty : Teachers for Obama : Here is a digital painting cover that I made for the Weekly Standard. They wanted something about the teachers for Obama.
Hope you guys like it.
Shafali Anand's insight:

I discovered Thomas Fluharty by following a caricature of George Bush that I've admired for a very long time. (Had his signatures been a little more legible, I'd have discovered him a long time ago.) What strikes me about his caricatures is his confident use of rough brush-strokes to achieve the look that he wants to. His caricatures come alive, and despite his lazy brush that refuses to finish anything below the subject's waist, they captivate you. His caricatures score very high on likeness and he paints fantastic eyes.

While Fluharty also uses a lot of traditional media (generally oils or acrylics - I think,) he is adept at digital painting too. You'll find his work on the covers of The Weekly Standard and the TIME magazine.

Shafali Anand's insight:

Joan Vizcarra's caricatures are Different (yes, with a capital D.) they convey fun through their wide array of bright colors. While his caricatures aren't two high on likeness, he deviates beautifully from the traditional (safe) caricaturing. He uses traditional media for his work. In my opinion, he's the master of color exaggeration. Check out his galleries here :)

Shafali Anand's insight:

Personally, this is one of my favorites. While the details  (the issues that surround the state capitol building, the caduceus in the elephant's trunk, the dollar-bills on the plant) were many, what I really enjoyed painting was the action around the building as it trundles behind Governor Hutchinson.

Kaltoons is the official site of Kevin Kallaugher, world renown political cartoonist
Shafali Anand's insight:

Kal or Kevin Kallaugher is one of the most respected Cartoonist/Caricaturist of the world. He's known for his continuous association with The Economist (this page contains the covers he has created for the economist.) His work can be uniquely defined as caritoons or carticatures - because they neatly combine the simplicity of cartoons with the likeness of caricatures.

Unlike most cartoonists and caricaturists, Kal is endowed with some degree of business-sense too. In 2007 he started his own animation company called KalLtoons LLC. Read his biography at:

Visit http://www.kaltoons.com/wordpress/portfolio/ for his portfolio page. I think the header is awesome.

I don't know much about Loopydave, except that his work is droolworthy. He is extremely good at drawing stylized women and his work has a crispness to it that isn't easy to find :) He does the covers for Modesty Blaise - his work is mainly digital.
