It’s exam time, and most students go through the same panicked routine semester after semester. While you may think caffeine and all-nighters are the only way to tackle exam week, studies show that this kind of study pattern may harm your scores more than it helps!

Things To Know Before Your Job Interview #Infographic

There are a few big no-nos that you should stay away from, and they are quite well outlined in this Infographic by Classes and Careers.  http://bit.ly/JwnVeo

This one; however, goes a little bit deeper into the actual interview and what certain things you should avoid while in the interview itself. It boils down to being confident and knowledgeable but it also deepens our knowledge when it comes to things we should not do, wear or even say.

If you can keep away from these, you will already make a better impression. One particularly interesting thing is that being fashionable and trendy is almost frowned upon.

Employers don’t want applicants to be either of these, and it would interesting to know the reason why that is.

Here's What Happens When You Hate Your Job

Sometimes the place you thought you wanted to work is not the right fit.

Brent Daily - http://bit.ly/AncWnN -founder of RoundPegg, ascertains that the typical hiring process is fantastically dysfunctional.

Failing to do your own diligence has its costs and willingness to overlook red flags in order to win a job.

However, gaining a position with an organisation whose culture is not the right fit has its costs:

  • Loss of confidence
  • Lack of motivation to engage in other important areas of your life and
  • Missed oppotunities to advance knowledge, responsibilities and personal brand
There is more to our professional success than having the chops, and it comes back to how well we fit the company culture, the team’s work dynamics and our manager’s style.
The best thing you can do when finding your next employer is to dig deep and conduct your own interview.
Odds are the hiring manager isn’t going to be able to articulate the culture or how they operate so you have to get your hands dirty to get a better feel for whether it is the right place for you.
Specifically:
  • Decision-Making
  • Feedback and Rewards
  • Team Dynamics
  • Management

And then:

  • Drop Your Preconceived Notions
  • Listen Critically
  • Probe

Landing a job is less important than landing a job at the right company for you. Take back some control over the process, interview everyone on the team and don’t hesitate to be the first one to say, “It’s not you, it’s me.”

How To Train Your Employees To Handle Your Social Media #Infographic

Social Media Consultants can be an expensive addition to your business. But in this day and age, no company can operate without a sound social plan.

Who needs an expensive social media consultant when you can train your employees in Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn best practices yourself?

How can you find your company’s natural social media rockstars and get your entire team on board with your goals?

This Mindflash Infographic breaks down the types of social media users you’ll find in your company — the digital native, savvy technologist, reluctant user, digital newby and digital contrarian — and how to approach training each of them.

This guide also highlights an important fact: 76% of companies do not have a clearly defined social media policy. Whether or not you have an explicit policy, make sure you’re aware of the way everyone in your company represents your brand.

Despite the swanky pitches you may receive from pros, your best social media team might actually be your current workforce.

The History Of Social Recruiting Technology #Infographic

Check out how recruiting technology has changed over the years -- and how it can be updated for the social world.

Digital recruiting has certainly come a long way in such a short time.

One of the biggest advances made in recruiting in the last 20 years has been the advent of social media.

Networking platforms — LinkedIn being the most noteworthy — have altered the foundation of recruiting to allow for more efficiency, higher speed and better results.

This Infographic, with research and art provided by Jobvite, not only chronicles the major leaps in recruiting since the ’90s but also shows how social media can be cleverly integrated for even more efficiency. Of course, these changes are in sync with the way that job seekers are handling their own search — Pew Research estimates that 65% of adults use social media for their own job search.

How Tech Is Changing College Life #Infographic

How central is technology to modern college life?

This Infographic by Presta Electronics, using material from the Pew Research Center, Chronicle of Higher Education, Mashable and other sources breaks it down:

More than 90% use email to communicate with professors and 73% say they cannot study without technology. Seven in 10 take notes on keyboards instead of paper, virtually all students who own an ereader and most use digital tools when preparing a presentation.

All that tech has caused something of a dependency too — 38% of students can’t go more than 10 minutes without checking their smartphone or other device. All told, students spent $13 billion on electronics in 2009.

Community college students are less digitally connected than students at four-year schools, but more and more people are making the Internet their education gateway. Twelve million students take at least one class online today — in five years, that number is projected to exceed 22 million.

By 2014, analysts say, more than 3.5 million students will take all of their classes online.

Staying safe on campus isn’t impossible if you’re careful, know what to look out for and plan for dangerous situations in advance.

Work / Life Balance Survey + #Infographic

The Captivate Office Pulse Survey on Work-Life Balance reveals that when it comes to work-life balance, men are happier than women.

The Survey - http://bit.ly/IggKaL - of 673 workers shows that men are 25% happier at work and 8% happier at home than women are.

There are also some interesting insights into some of the ways the lack of a work-life balance impacts people and how a healthy work-life balance can be maintained.

The link between work-life balance and health

Captivate - http://bit.ly/IggSqZ - found that a lack of work-life balance doesn’t just lead to unhappiness, but it can also affect one’s health, with a staggering number of respondents of both genders acknowledging that they are cognizant of a link between work-life issues and their health.

Given that the survey found women are unhappier with their work-life balance, it’s not surprising that they also have more health issues as a result.

So how can people be happier and achieve a better work-life balance? Researchers found that happier individuals are actually more likely to engage in certain activities. This shows that people can take charge and take concrete steps to feel better about their work-life balance.

Whether for health, happiness or long-term well-being, maintaining an appropriate work-life balance should be a priority for everyone. As this survey discovered though, maintaining that balance is no simple task. Perhaps the most important finding is the critical role a good cultural fit plays in helping keep people happy, health and sane in the workplace.

Clean Up That Profile: 37 Percent Of Companies Research Candidates Via Social Networks

According to the new CareerBuilder Survey - http://cb.com/I3o7Iv - many [37%] hiring managers are using social media to research candidates. Facebook and LinkedIn are frequented the most.

Unless you've been living in a cave these last weeks, you'll know there's been a huge outcry about employers snooping on candidates' social media profiles, or worse still requesting Facebook passwords as part of their hiring processes.

And looking at the positive role a candidate's social media profiles can solidify the decision to hire in a way that's had little if any media coverage.

I leave you to dwell on the tweaks you might want to make to your social media profiles before you progress too far along the job hunt path...

What Every Employee And Employer Must Know About Social Media

These must-know truisms can help clear the air and keep everyone out of trouble.

While social media continues to evolve—and much will change in the years to come—every employer and employee should understand a few simple things. Being ignorant of social media risks, best practices, and laws is no excuse for employees' making career-ending mistakes or employers' stumbling into costly legal and brand reputation errors.

Augie Ray - http://bit.ly/HRRbBn - has outlined both Employer and Employee requirements here:

http://bit.ly/IHXuC3

Three things Employers should know about social media:

1. Training and communication about corporate social media policies are essential

2. Give employees every opportunity to vent in private and appropriate channels

3. Do not ask for candidates' or employees' passwords

Three things Employees should know about social media:

1. If you manage people, never discipline an employee for what you see in personal social media profiles without consulting legal or human resources professionals

2. What you say and do in social media can get you fired

3. Your employer has a good reason to monitor you on social media

It may seem to some that social media has matured and become a way of life. That is far from true—social media will continue to challenge and change laws, regulations, business practices, and the nature of the employee/employer relationship.

Until the dust settles—and that will not be for many years—employers and employees alike are better off proceeding with caution. There are many landmines waiting for companies and workers in our new and evolving social era.

The Case For Facebook

Employees are going on social networks and browsing the web in the office.

In an age when social tools pervade every aspect of our lives, the corporate debate over allowing employees to partake in these activities during work hours is a controversial one.

In moderation, can these breaks encourage psychological engagement and perhaps even help increase productivity.

This Keas - http://bit.ly/IwpEEo - Infographic explores the benefits of social media in the workplace, showing that social connections make people happier and a brief recess involving Internet-browsing increases productivity.

Why Teamwork is Overrated —

Does teamwork always enhance the performance of organisations?

It might seem like a question that's too obvious to ask. Practically every job description ever written demands 'a good team player'.

Teams of all kinds pop up everywhere in organisations and the assumption is that they enhance organisational performance.

In fact the evidence for the supposedly stupendous power of teams is pretty weak. Hundreds of studies have been carried out examining people's performance in groups.

Far from finding a huge boost to performance from teamwork, the studies are neutral or only show small benefits (Allen & Hecht, 2004 - http://bit.ly/H31zqD ).

Here are some typical characteristics of groups from Hackman (1990) - http://bit.ly/H31KCn :

  • High performing groups are not normal, instead groups often have huge variations in ability from top to bottom.
  • People in groups often waste time squabbling over goals.
  • Groups frequently suffer downward performance spirals.

The message from the research is clear: the benefits of teamwork are nowhere near as clear as the fashion would suggest. Worse, sometimes the arbitrary implementation of teams reduces organisational performance.

The Magic Of Doing One Thing At A Time

Why is it that between 25 and 50% of people report feeling overwhelmed or burned out at work?

It's not just the number of hours we're working, but also the fact that we spend too many continuous hours juggling too many things at the same time.

What we've lost, above all, are stopping points, finish lines and boundaries.

Technology has blurred them beyond recognition. Wherever we go, our work follows us, on our digital devices, ever insistent and intrusive. It's like an itch we can't resist scratching, even though scratching invariably makes it worse.

The biggest cost — assuming you don't crash — is to your productivity. In part, that's a simple consequence of splitting your attention, so that you're partially engaged in multiple activities but rarely fully engaged in any one.

In part, it's because when you switch away from a primary task to do something else, you're increasing the time it takes to finish that task by an average of 25%.

Here are three policies worth promoting:
