Seth's Blog: How to get a job with a small company | My Career Explorer | Scoop.it
Most advice about job seeking is oriented around big companies. The notion of a standard resume, of mass mailings, of dealing with the HR department--even the idea of interviews--is all built around the Fortune 500.

Seth Godin's advice on how to land a job at a small company!

I particularly agree that most people won't go through the steps of branding, marketing, and selling themselves.  That is how you can differentiate yourself from the pack.

I thoroughly love reading Seth Godin's tips and advice, and this was one he wrote a few years ago; however, still rings true today.

Make it a great day!

Thank you for sharing this article!

The difference between situational interview questions ("what would you do."   and  Behavioral interview questions ("Describe a time when....and What did you ...)

In behavioral interview questions we are seeking specific examples of how you responded.  How you responded or behaved in the past are important indicators of how you will behave and respond in the future.

Behavioral interview questions may be tied to a company value or leadership competency.  My tip on how to prepare for behavioral interivew questions:

1.  Select a few different sitautions that can be re-purposed towards varied competencies and values.

2.  Use the CAR method for responding to behavioral interview questions (the one that I provide in my book)

C - Describe the circumstances

A - What actions you took and who did you involve

R - What were the results; tie them to the key measures for the position/company  (for example:  customer service, sales, expenses, employee engagement, etc.)

3.  Practice rehearsing your responses with a friend or family member

Don't memorize your responses, because they need to be genuine!

Hope this helps!!!

Great suggestions in this article!

Informational meetings and expanding your networking efforts are steps only a small percentage of candidates are doing.  Remember, laying the groundwork for when an opportunity opens up.

The informational meetings will help give you the inside scoop, and will also help the people you are speaking with understanding on what positions you are seeking, and understand what it is you are asking to help you with.
