Bad Hires - Why You Really Should Move Quickly to Get Rid of Them

Bad Hires - Why You Really Should Move Quickly to Get Rid of Them | Career Management Strategies | Scoop.it
Everyone knows that the average hiring process is less than perfect. In fact, most selection processes have high failure rates (i.e. even after months or even years of “assessment,” …

Terence R. Egan's curator insight, January 20, 2014 8:33 AM
Why you need to release bad hires as soon as possible
 1. They are unlikely get better
 2. They take up everyone’s time
 3. Customers notice
 4. They frustrate their co-workers
 5. They delay the hiring of a quality replacement

How to quickly identify and release weak new hires

No-fault divorce after six months

Cisco once offered an option that offered several months of pay and a good reference to poor performers after six months if they agreed to resign. If they refused the offer and stayed until their one-year evaluation and also failed that, they would get no package and a bad reference.

[Any shortcomings in this policy?]

Extended onboarding

Some firms use an extended onboarding process to better identify hiring mistakes. Facebook (six weeks) and Zappos (four weeks) use this process as a secondary assessment level.

Pay them to leave after onboarding

Zappos offers all new hires a $3,000 bonus to quit at the end of onboarding if they realize that this is not the job for them.

Use initial training as a screening process

HR must learn how to assess the probability that the new hire will succeed/fail based on their training scores.

Consider a more rigorous probation period

Managers are reluctant to fire someone who they just seelcted. Require managers to implement periodic quantified assessments and to report the results to HR.

Use a mentor

Some firms provide every new hire with a mentor. That mentor can advise on whether or not the new hire should stay.

Allow the team to vote them out

Whole Foods allows team members to “vote” at the end of an assessment period on whether to make the new hire a permanent member of the team. They have team-based performance rewards.

Encourage the dissatisfied to leave quickly

It makes sense to encourage dissatisfied hires (even if they are good performers) to quit as soon as possible.

John Michel's curator insight, November 12, 2013 1:00 PM

Effective leadership builds a following based on a vision and values, rather than just a “nice” personality. When the leader puts the vision above “likability,” the difficult decisions may not be liked, but they build trust and respect. In many cases, trust and respect will lead to friendship — and often deeper relationships than just being liked.

A long time Scoop.it user, janlgordon just launched curatti.com and this is one of the first posts I found in there by Andy Capaloff. He makes an interesting point on "idea darwinism" suggesting that if we're scared about speaking up and making our voice heard, we're running the risk of letting a certain kind of ideas prevail. At the detriment of creativity and innovation.

The time has never been so right to step up and become the thought leader we can be.

Karen Percak's curator insight, November 17, 2013 7:33 AM

Always questiong.....  We need to teach our students and teachers to keep asking thoughtful, challenging questions of those who make the "assignemnts."  This will spark innovation and creativity in our educational change process.
