A Primer on Supply-Side vs Demand-Side Economics

A Primer on Supply-Side vs Demand-Side Economics | CarBuyWhiz | Scoop.it

For three decades, proponents of Supply Side Economics told skeptics "just watch and see what will happen!" (Whenever top tax rates were cut.) Okay, we've watched. And absolutely every large-scale forecast made by promoters of Supply Side Economics failed -- diametrically -- without major exception.

The uber-rich did not take their tax-break largesse and invest it in innovative/productive equipment. They poured it into either passive investments -- what Adam Smith derided as "rent-seeking" -- or else risky financial instruments and asset bubbles. Above all, the direct forecast that reduced revenues would erase federal deficits went directly opposite to observed fact.

A World of Englishes: Is /ə/ "real"? | CarBuyWhiz | Scoop.it

Is /ə/ "real"? "Is schwa a real phoneme?" asked a first year student, during a preliminary session preparing them for transcription in the second year. What an excellent question!
The issue arose because I had referred them to John Wells' standard lexical sets to describe English vowel sounds more easily. This is a list of English phonemes with keywords devised by Prof Wells and given in his three-volume book Accents of English(1982). Rather than trying to explain in articulatory terms what /ʊ/ is in comparison with /ʌ/, for example, they can be referred to as the FOOT and STRUT vowels respectively, and then discussion about them appearing (or not) in various accents of English can also be facilitated.

Shouting at the Cosmos..or how SETI has Taken a Worrisome Turn into Dangeorus Territory

Shouting at the Cosmos..or how SETI has Taken a Worrisome Turn into Dangeorus Territory | CarBuyWhiz | Scoop.it

SETI has long occupied a unique niche in modern intellectual life, combining serious and far-reaching science with a kind of gosh-wow zeal that seems (at times) to border on the mystical — perhaps as much religious as a product of science or science fiction. Indeed, to some, the notion of contact with advanced alien civilizations may carry much the same transcendental or hopeful significance as any more traditional notion of “salvation from above”. But, should small groups of opinionated people here on Earth decide for the rest of us - without even consulting us - whether to attract the attention of aliens out there? It's a more sober and serious topic that you might expect. And I take a position that might surprise you, for a sci fi author. But I also happen to be a scientist. And I believe important matters should be discussed and done right. See my "Lifeboat" article about "Messages to ET Intelligences... or METI

Science is debunking the myth that the need for competition to survive has genetically programmed selfish, aggressive competitive propensities through evolution. The only way we or any other species survived was through both inter- and intra-species cooperation. The present-day structuring of society in terms of win-lose games needs to change if we are to continue surviving.

Climate change occurring 10 times faster than at any time in past 65 million years | e! Science News

The planet is undergoing one of the largest changes in climate since the dinosaurs went extinct. But what might be even more troubling for humans, plants and animals is the speed of the change.

Stanford climate scientists warn that the likely rate of change over the next century will be at least 10 times quicker than any climate shift in the past 65 million years. If the trend continues at its current rapid pace, it will place significant stress on terrestrial ecosystems around the world, and many species will need to make behavioral, evolutionary or geographic adaptations to survive.

Although some of the changes the planet will experience in the next few decades are already "baked into the system," how different the climate looks at the end of the 21st century will depend largely on how humans respond.

The findings come from a review of climate research by Noah Diffenbaugh, an associate professor of environmental Earth system science, and Chris Field, a professor of biology and of environmental Earth system science and the director of the Department of Global Ecology at the Carnegie Institution. The work is part of a special report on climate change in the current issue of Science.

249 lessons using some of the TEDEd series of videos as well as other short educational videos. These are great videos on a wide range of topics from practical 'how to' videos (e.g. How to take a great picture) to a whimsical cartoon about molecules and chemical reactions using the metaphor of people walking down busy city streets.

Each created lesson has four activity categories - Watch (watch the video), Think (multi-choice and open answer questions), Dig Deeper (additional web links and resources), Discuss (focus question with a forum for responses).

There is also a 'flip this lesson' button to enable you to customise the lesson with your own questions (you need to have a TEDEd account to do this but it is free). As well you can create lessons from scratch using any Youtube video using the Watch/Think/Dig Deeper/Discuss format.

Note that only Youtube videos are available for this 'flipping' tool but for schools which have a block on Youtube opening your system to the Youtube School channel (which allows access to educational videos only) would be a way to make access possible.
