Are Diesels Ready to Give Hybrids a Run for the Money?

Cars with diesel engines provide far greater driving range between fill-ups than their gas brethren too.
eric roberts's insight:

Diesel versus Hybrids?

This is an interesting one? Some the car manufacturers are turning their efforts into developing more efficient diesel engines to give better mileage figures. This will also compete with the electric cars that are now being developed.

Surprising or not car development technology stops for no one. And new cars with cleaner diesel technologies have become much more credible alternatives to the hybrids because they are using much more advanced fuel systems, better and much more powerful electronics, and more up to date design techniques when designing the other engine parts. This is yet another step that we are taking to develop the cars of the future.

Another advantage of these new generation diesel engine cars is that the cars will not lose any rear leg room or boot space. In the electric cars this space is taken up by the large batteries that drive the cars power unit. In my opinion, I think that this will be another step to the massive mix of vehicles using different technologies on our roads and it can only be good news for those working in the auto trade, especially us garage owners, as long as we are given access to the new technology and train our staff we should have nothing to worry about, after all when i think back to what cars were like when i was a young mechanic, compared with what they are like now, then we have nothing to fear in the future unless you know differently?

Caring for car batteries during the winter months - The Rome Observer

Caring for car batteries during the winter months - The Rome Observer | car batteries | Scoop.it
Caring for car batteries during the winter months
The Rome Observer
(METRO) -- Few things can be more frustrating than jumping into the driver's seat on a frosty morning, turning the key in the ignition and failing to hear the engine roar to life.
eric roberts's insight:

Why does your Car Battery fail in the Winter?

As silly as it may seem many drivers hardly use their cars in the winter months and indeed some drivers lock them away in the garage, (if they have one).

Nothing can be more stressful that trying to start your car on a cold winters morning, only to find that your car wont start. It is one of the saddest sounds that you as a driver will hear when the battery just makes a slow grinding noise made by the starter motor as it tries to start up your car. Normally the engine just zips up at the turn of the key and off you go, but not this morning, it’s frosty and -2 C or bellow and the car will not start up.

This is the scenario that thousands of motorists a day will experience, but a bit of knowledge goes a long way and setting out a few facts can help the motorist understand a little more about their car batteries and how they respond to the climate. The two extremes of weather conditions, the cold and the heat will affect your car batteries performance. Here in the UK we rarely experience excess heat, so I will concentrate on the cold.

In cold weather the chemical action in the battery will be slowed down and I have actually seen the battery liquid (sulphuric acid) frozen solid. This is why you are better off keeping your car in a garage if possible, either in really cold weather or overnight. What happens is that although it may be cold in the garage, the heat from the engine when the car was run the day before, will act as a heater for the battery as the engine compartment will still retain the heat.

If the battery is over five years old then it should be replaced with a new battery, most batteries will fail after the five year period, and this is what we have found over the years, also imported cars from the Far Eastern countries such as Japan, China and South Korea are imported with batteries that are lower specifications that the ones made for the European market, these batteries do not stand up to the cold weather and usually fail early on in the cars life.

The best thing that drivers can do is to have their car battery checked before the onset of winter and replace It if necessary, but in really severe cold as experienced in the USA recently, then the battery could still fail without further protection from the cold.

A few things to look out for when buying your new battery.

Make sure that it is the correct battery for the car and has the same power, the same number of amps and cold cranking amps. It will be all right to go bigger if it will fit the cars battery compartment as long as the battery has the same voltage, usually 12volts and 6volts on classic cars and vintage cars.

Here are a few more tips if the weather forecast is for really cold conditions. You can use a battery blanket, to cover the battery and stop it freezing. You could also use a trickle charger, because the battery will retain some heat as the battery is been charged up, and stop it from freezing. If your car is stored in the garage for a period of time then disconnect the battery and try to keep it on a trickle charger when the battery is in storage, you can buy cheap intelligent chargers now that will do this job.

The world's most aerodynamic two-person car achieves 110km/hr on batteries ...
eric roberts's insight:

This new car design is claimed to be one of the most aerodynamic car ever built with greater efficiency than many other cars ever designed. The guy who designed the cars and the cars engineers were funded

by a scheme called the “Kickstarter Campaign”. This is a business funding scheme that lets investors offer the collateral towards any worthy project that they feel as though they could invest in, and the investors will offer their money to make the project work. The project will have a time limit and the money is paid out at the end of the project.

Funding has been very effective at creating new ventures and getting the inventors and investors round a table to help get some great ideas off the ground. As I have said the money will not be paid out until the project has been finished and up to this day over 40% of projects have reached their climax for more information… http://www.kickstarter.com/

"The name of the new car will be Urbee, because of its lozenge shape and it has the ability to slip through the air. The car will be driven by a 7 horse power engine the type used in a lawn mower and is thought to be capable of speeds nearing 70mph, the top speed allowed on British motorways. To prove the cars “green status” the engineers who made the car are hoping to travel from New York to San Francisco on just 10 gallon of bio-fuel a distance of just short of 3000miles, which must be some kind of World record ,if it is achieved.

The car was put together by a 3D printer, which allows for seamless parts, which makes the car more efficient and reduces the total weight of the completed car. The parts are thinner and much lighter than the ones which are made from the conventional car manufacturing methods".

New Peugeot Invention Better Than Batteries: A Hybrid Car That Runs on Air

New Peugeot Invention Better Than Batteries: A Hybrid Car That Runs on Air | car batteries | Scoop.it
Peugeot's new technology will get you 117 miles per gallon. (Better Than Batteries: A Hybrid Car That Runs on Air http://t.co/3wz2KXjhlo)
eric roberts's insight:

New technology to compete with the big batteries

This new development from Peugeot-Citroen is yet another big

development to compete with the massive batteries and price tag of the earlier hybrid cars. The beauty about this car is that the engine is almost a standard type engine that uses petrol (gasoline) along with uprated gearbox and special hydraulics. This is great news for us independent garage owners as it will give us a chance to repair these cars when they arrive in the aftermarket a few years down the line, a thing that I don’t believe will happen with the huge Lithium-Ion battery driven cars, that are to be leased to their owners.

The new car will be driven by the conventional engine when travelling any distance, but will reverts to the “Air power” when driving in cities and towns, when the air system will be activated when the car does less than 43 mph. It is also expected that the car will be capable of producing an average of just less than 129 miles to the gallon with upgrades towards 2020. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2266632/Car-runs-air-coming-soon-Peugeot-Citroen-unveil-new-117mpg-

The first hybrid using this technology is expected to on the smaller Peugeot 206; although I don’t think that a decision has yet been made. The price of these new cars is going to be about £1000.00 cheaper than today’s battery powered hybrids. The car has been a closely guarded secret and has been under development for almost three years now at a research centre not far from the south of Paris. The car is expected to be a great success and will help the giant French car company to retain its place in the technology driven hybrid car market. The car will also use a standard battery and will look no different to the standard models that we see today, as I said previously this will be a car that we can all service in the future which is good news for the independent garages out there.

Car batteries don't usually last for more than around five years, so if your car is approaching that sort of age and is still using its original battery, it's worth getting it checked over.
eric roberts's insight:

Battery is something just stuck under the bonnet

To most car drivers the battery is just something that is stuck under the bonnet (hood) and the only time they will know that it exists is when the will not start and it is usually in the middle of nowhere or when you are driving to that important meeting on a cold winters day.

The days are getting much shorter now and the nights colder, you will also be using more of the cars electrics in winter, the heaters, wipers lights in fact you will be using everything electrical, thus putting your car battery under immense pressure. Also you should be using the cars air-conditioning system to clear and de-mist another power sucking piece of equipment that will drain the cars battery, not forgetting to de-ice the car before you set off on your journey.

According to the AA here in the UK flat batteries are the biggest cause of car breakdowns and the problem starts to get worst at this time of year. Most new car batteries are guaranteed for three years, but the batteries on a new car will last on average for about five years, so if your car is five years old or over ,be prepare to have to change the battery ,before it lets you down. You can have a free battery check at most garages, but if you need a garage that you can trust ,then look online for your nearest Unipart Car Care Centre, they have a network of garages that can be trusted on price and service.

FORD TO INJECT MONEY INTO MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY

The University of Michigan will soon be setting up a new department, to study and develop a new battery, with the financial help of Fords .

The batteries will be developed for there longivity quality and thier endurance

It is a known fact that the electric car has been a slow seller for Ford and it will also be important to develop a battery that is a cheap battery, it will be one of Fords priorities to bring down the price of these batteries.

Electric cars have been very slow to take off, reaching only 1% of the American car market in the year thats just passed. The Hybrid cars (EV''S) a mix of petrol and battery power  have faired better, taking up just 3% of the total market.

This in part is due to the  high cost of these cars, due mainly to the lithium-ion batteries that are the main source of battery power at the present time.

With the help of  a $5 mil grant this new university department is expected to develop a cheaper alternative battery ,that is hoped will bring down the cost of the Ford electric cars.

eric roberts's insight:

French company is now in the Electric car market

It is good to see that the electric car and car battery production will not just be coming out of the USA and CHINA. A FRENCH company, known as

“GROUP BOLLORE” has gone into the development of a battery for electric cars. They are forming collaboration with the car maker RENAULT. this excellent article describes an in depth report about the amalgamation.

The companies will share technology and expertise to enable them to compete with the fast growing GERMAN electric car market, coming from VW and BMW. Although RENAULT claim half the European market, it is well known that GERMANY is moving along in this field at speed.

Lithium-Metal- Polymer batteries to be used on their electric cars.

The companies have preferred to use the lithium-metal-Polymer batteries, rather than the Lithium-Ion batteries, because they say that are more able to resist external temperatures and are more powerful. The Group Bollore has invested a massive $2.3 Billion on battery development in the last few years and will work from two new plants in CANADA and Brittany in North West FRANCE.

Researchers at MIT have developed a battery that could bring us reliable and cheap large scale energy storage. eric roberts's insight:

There are many Universities now developing new types of batteries ?

Multiple-Electron Aqueous Battery

The University of Maryland UMD has just secured $32 million for research into to develop  electric vehicles (EV) energy storage systems using innovative chemistries, architectures and designs.

The short distances that are covered by using the Lithium-Ion batteries are

causing some concern in the auto industry and governments and car makers are looking for better ideas and products that will be safer, lower cost and more reliable than the Lithium-Ion batteries that are now in use.

This has brought together the Army research Laboratory aka(ARL) and the UMD to create a new type of battery.

This new type of battery is expected to be with twice the cell voltage and capacity, this would cut the cost in half compared to the lithium-Ion battery.

The new battery would enable an electric vehicle to twice the length of the charge. if the new batteries development is a successful, then the EV is expected to drive up to 300 miles on a single charging. This would be a great improvement on the Lithium-Ion batteries that are used by some companies at present.

In my opinion, for what it's worth, we will one day discover the "magic battery", that will cut down our reliability on gasoline burning engines and will truly make for a better driving experience, without having to rely on fossil fuels, I think we are slowly getting there and whether this new development will be the answer or not, only time will tell.

A Place Where You Can Get A Good Deal On Your Car Batteries

A Place Where You Can Get A Good Deal On Your Car Batteries | car batteries | Scoop.it

Looking for cheap batteries for your car? Here are some excellent tips to keep in mind to find cheap car batteries.

Via gmaria880
eric roberts's insight:

Cheap batteries and Qaulity

Most motorists are looking for cheap car batteries at the moment, but you can get quality batteries at a cheap price. The main thing to start with is the reliability of the company and can you trust them if you have a problem. Also to keep your side of the bargain are you honest about the correct use of the battery. One guy recently bought a battery to use on a go-kart and did not charge it in between races then complained that the battery was faulty; we get many similar cases like this. So if you are buying a battery for your car fair enough, but if you are using it for other reasons, you will have void the warranty, because we have no way of knowing that the battery was correctly charged, as a good working car would do.

Going back to where I was, cheap batteries are not always the best option. If you are selling the car then it would be a good idea to fit the cheapest battery, but if you are intending to keep your car then you should look for the best name that you can afford. You would be surprised at the variation of battery makes that are out there in the market place, the choice that we have is fantastic, so make the right choice for your car.

Another point to consider is the choice of car battery for the later models that are full of electrics. If you own this type of car then it is important that you stick to the same powered battery that was fitted as original equipment. Do not skimp for a less powerful battery. Even the newer Peugeots can now come with electric doors and stop-start technology, so be smart and choose a well-known make such as Luca batteries or Varta batteries, both made in Europe by Johnson Controls the World’s largest battery manufacturers, supplying a top class product and all the time creating better battery products for today’s greener car technology. You could also go for Tungstone batteries made by Yuasa batteries.  As I have said previously the cheapest is not always the best and go with an established company where you know that any future problems will be solved.

You Must Constantly Check Your Motorcycle Batteries – Require Much Care | car batteries | Scoop.it
Motorcycle Batteries - Require Much Care People generally have a feeling that a "maintenance-free battery" would need no care and they will simply put it (...) (Motorcycle Batteries - Require Much Care http://t.co/CUOvGw5UIS...
eric roberts's insight:

Varta Motorcycle batteries

Most bikers (motor cyclists) replace their old flat battery with the

cheapest well known make of battery that they can find. We find that the best sellers are a battery called Numax, Lucas and Varta, who are all made by the same company, Johnson controls.

Most replacement batteries will come in a dry state and an acid battery pack. The procedure is simple. When the battery arrives you should check to see if there is any damage or not and that the contents are all in order. If everything is fine, then prepare to fill the battery with the acid. The best place to do this would be outside if possible, just in case you spill any of the acid, you wouldn’t want to ruin your best carpet, would you?. When the battery is filled, you should leave it outside to stand for an hour and the battery should be back to a fully charged state. I always recommend that you should trickle charge the battery, just to make sure, and then fit it to your bike and try it out. Another good point that I should make would be to make sure that you clean all terminals and the place where the battery sits.

It is always important to keep your battery and its carrier clean at all times, although all the bikes that I have seen have always looked immaculate, so I am sure that the battery is also looked after by the biker. Even a battery that is maintenance free will need some care and cleaning, especially the terminals which by the way should have a smear of Vaseline applied to protect them from the elements.

You must keep your motorcycle batteries charged up

If you don’t possess a charger I would recommend that you buy one. Most bikers only use their bikes in summer time, so the battery will be unused and not receive any charge during the long winter. Once the battery dischargers to a certain level, usually below 80% capacity, then it is unlikely to recover, as the plate solution starts to break down and settles to the bottom or the battery acid causing a short circuit. This can be avoided by buying a smart charger and leaving the battery on charge all the winter. When the battery charge starts to drop the charger will kick in and start to re-charge the battery again, it only uses electricity when the battery is being charged, charges are available from Numax and Ring Electrical and are a great thing to have to prolong the life of your battery.

This also applies to AGM sealed batteries, they too will need charging throughout the winter or when the bike is not in permanent use.

BATTERY CARE-Your Car is at Risk! – Reasons Car Batteries Fail | car batteries | Scoop.it

Frequent battery failure can cost you thousands of dollars for repairs. You can avoid battery problems by following regular maintenance. To reduce chances of battery failures, it’s critical to understand its causes.

Via Frank E. Blakeslee
eric roberts's insight:

GIve your car battery a winter check

As we all know winter is just around the corner here in the Northern hemisphere. The weather is turning colder at night and this will affect the performance of your car battery. To keep your battery lasting longer there are one or two things that you can do.

If your battery has the old type screw tops, then you can inspect the level of the acid in your battery. If this is something that you have to do at often intervals then it means that the battery is boiling and could have a faulty alternator. You should top the battery up with distilled water and recheck it a few days after, to see if the level has dropped again. If the level has dropped then you should get your alternator checked at a good garage.

If are reading this in the UK and you do not know of a good garage, then look up the nearest Unipart Car Care Centre (UCCC) in your area, they have safeguards to protect you the customer and a fair price policy, but more than that they can be trusted.

Also look out for white coloured powder on the top of the battery, this indicates a leak around the terminals, the white powder is dried battery acid. You can clean it off using a cup full of warm water, but if it is a recurring problem it means that the battery is on its way out and needs replacing before it lets you down.

This is about the limit that you can go to check over your battery and look after it, after all has I have said the last thing you want is for the battery to let you down, when you least expect it and having to be towed to the nearest garage to have it seen to, and paying over the odds because you are stranded. That is if they have a battery to fit your car, you may have to wait another day if they have to order a new battery.

eric roberts's insight:

I know how customers can about their car ?

This is getting to be a bigger problem for us garages. The irate customer syndrome. We have all had them but thanks goodness none of my customers have yet to smash their car up with a hammer ?

We did however have a customer in last week for an exhaust part fitting, which should have taken about an hour, so the customer waited in our reception and started to read a magazine.

Unfortunately the exhaust front pipe was siezed up at the manifold and was going to take loger. There was no added charge for the extra time, but the customer went bezerk, he swore and said he would not pay for the "effing" job. The other customers in the reception could not believe their ears, with all the expletives going on. The guy was a big guy and ex forces, due to his tatoos and so we had to be carefull with the way we handled him.

Eventually he paid for the job and thankfully for us all he paid and left the premises, but it goaes to show how violent our customers can be, and i am thankfull that we DO NOT HAVE GUNS HERE IN THE UK !

Here's a lesson for us all -- never ever ignore a customer complaint because it will only spark stories about you that you never want told. Like this one!

Yes, it is hard to satisfy everyone. But it seems BMW really messed up here. Now the result is a story about an unhappy customer that is making the rounds at a fast clip.

This is just the kind of story every business should be working hard to avoid. I wonder how BMW is going to recover from this one?

Very good points Eric and your comments do show that it is a two-way street. Sometimes a business can't win when a customer is so totally irate. I'm still waiting to hear BMW's response.

GM planning 200-mile battery car

General Motors plans to more than double the range of the typical electric vehicle—while also sharply driving down the cost, according to a senior official.
eric roberts's insight:

Right step in Direction for an improved battery

This will be good news coming out of General Motors, although we keep hearing about these claims that the battery will do this and that.

I am sure that one day we the car makers will get this right and the battery driven car will be able to do the things that the petrol driven engine can do, but we will have to wait and see. Also the main factor is the price, if the price comes down, i think the cars will sell whatever battery they develop.

eric roberts's insight:

Should it be all electric vehicles not just cars

This is a part of the whole thing regarding alternate fuels.  The drive for electric driven cars, should be a drive for all types of vehicles including vans and trucks and not just cars that only the better off can afford.

We have all seen the type of drivers that operate EV cars most of them are retired. I am convinced that the motorists that drive these cars just do it to brag that they are saving the Planet, but at what cost?

I as a garage and battery business owner have a few courtesy cars and a small fleet of delivery vans would like to see improvements in technology come forward for the vehicles in this sector there must be millions and millions of this type of vehicle driving on the roads but i don’t foresee anything happening on the horizon, because there is no fat profits to be made.

The vehicle in my picture is a small electric type van used by the French Post Office, this vehicle should be see more often, and affordable by small businesses, but i don’t think so ?

A range-extending motorcycle engine will be available as an optional generator in the i3 and standard in the i8.
eric roberts's insight:

BMW are one of many car makers to jump on the Electric Car bandwagon. The price of this small car is expected to about $40000 the same price as the BMW 3 series sedan model, all for a so called green car, that once again chargers up on DIRTY electricity.

"The “green” BMW EV is expected to qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit. BMW also notes that it is currently waiting to hear from federal regulators if buyers who purchase the range-extended version featuring the optional engine will be able to get the $7,500 tax credit as well.
BMW is set to establish a program that will allow buyers of the pure electric vehicle to borrow a gasoline or diesel vehicle for longer trips. He did say that details are unclear at this point but the service will be offered "as an

additional mobility package."...http://www.dailytech.com/BMW+Tips+i3+Electric+Car+Price+at+Roughly+40000/article31498.htm
