Are Diesels Ready to Give Hybrids a Run for the Money?
AOL Autos
Cars with diesel engines provide far greater driving range between fill-ups than their gas brethren too.
eric roberts's insight:

Diesel versus Hybrids?

This is an interesting one? Some the car manufacturers are turning their efforts into developing more efficient diesel engines to give better mileage figures. This will also compete with the electric cars that are now being developed.

Surprising or not car development technology stops for no one. And new cars with cleaner diesel technologies have become much more credible alternatives to the hybrids because they are using much more advanced fuel systems, better and much more powerful electronics, and more up to date design techniques when designing the other engine parts. This is yet another step that we are taking to develop the cars of the future.

Another advantage of these new generation diesel engine cars is that the cars will not lose any rear leg room or boot space. In the electric cars this space is taken up by the large batteries that drive the cars power unit. In my opinion, I think that this will be another step to the massive mix of vehicles using different technologies on our roads and it can only be good news for those working in the auto trade, especially us garage owners, as long as we are given access to the new technology and train our staff we should have nothing to worry about, after all when i think back to what cars were like when i was a young mechanic, compared with what they are like now, then we have nothing to fear in the future unless you know differently?

The greener alternative produce more tiny toxic particles from tyre and brake wear because batteries and other parts make them heavier, according to University of Edinburgh scientists.
eric roberts's insight:

Well !!!what do you think of this report? I must admit it did cheer me up a little when I read the article. As you probably know I am not a fan of the Electric Cars that are being thrown at us every day . These cars actually cause MORE toxic particles in the air that come from the tyres and brake dust from the brake parts.

This is due to the excessive weight of the batteries that these cars have to carry about with them.

I suppose it may be a little relief to us garage owners, but i think that electric cars will close down thousands of small family run garages and put millions of people out of work.

Governments do not care, they are idiots who are just playing at games, trying to compete from country to country, about who can get down the emissions lower and faster. Ploughing billions into the EV vehicles.

It's all part of Volvo's master plan to sell one million electrified cars by 2025.
eric roberts's insight:

Volvos are traditionally old person's cars. These plans will fit into the fact that most EV vehicles at the moment are bought by the older driver.

They have the "look at me I am driving a green car" attitude and they can also afford to buy them. I am not sure if the younger end of the car buying market are interested in electric cars?

Where does America's e-waste end up? GPS tracker tells all | car batteries | Scoop.it
Despite pledges to responsibly recycle old TVs and other unwanted electronics with toxic materials inside, an investigation tracks e-waste from the U.S. to unregulated scrapyards in Hong Kong.
eric roberts's insight:

This is no surprise to me? most of the world just dumps scrap electrical items. many are melted down to try and extract any valuable metals and minerals. The remainder is just dumped on unlicensed tips. The developing countries are the worst culprits dumping everything and burning them causing toxic fumes and smoke. I once witnessed an old television that was set on fire outside a block of flats. The smoke and poisonous gases were un -believable and could be seen from miles away. So let's get some joined up writing on this problem before it causes too much misery.

eric roberts's insight:

i am not a great fan of electric cars because i believe that it is going to put millions of auto workers out of work in the next twenty years.

I do however follow the progress of the EV development. This Ferarri 308 is an interesting story. The car started out as an abandoned burned out wreck, on a Californian highway. The shell was intact and rebuilt and re-designed as an electric car.

This Ferrari 308 GTE with the electric conversion is the world,s first 100% electric Ferarri with Zero-emissions. The old petrol driven, engine parts have been recycled. They will be used by other Ferarri enthusiast for use as spare engine parts.

The team that builds these electric vehicles, is made up of experts in engineering and car custom fabrication builders from the auto trade.

The company has used top mechanics and also use the best materials, when building their cars.

Tesla’s Electric Cars Aren’t as Green as You Might Think | car batteries | Scoop.it
Despite their green cred, Tesla cars create pollution and carbon emissions in ways that are easily overlooked by consumers and investors.
eric roberts's insight:

This is a good article but with the old argument that does not seem to stick? These supposedly green cars are not as green as they make out when you dig into the nitty gritty. Especially from coal- fired power stations using coal and gas to produce the electricity that recharge these cars. Governments turn a deaf ear to articles like this because of the billions of dollars that have been thrown at the problem?

discarded car batteries-Solar energy from discarded car batteries | car batteries | Scoop.it

MIT researchers have developed a simple procedure for making a promising type of solar cell using lead recovered from discarded lead-acid car batteries—a practice that could benefit both the environment and human health.

eric roberts's insight:

In my opinion this is the area that we should be heading? we are running out of Lithium as i am writing this article for my battery blog.

Waste lead acid acid batteries are one of the success stories when it comes  to recycling. I believe the figure is a staggering 95% of old lead acid batteries are turned back into usable products.

The price of scrap lead went through the roof in 2015 and this news from MIT university will make them even more sought after.
