Ten days after the shutdown began, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that 317 people in 20 states and Puerto Rico had confirmed cases of salmonella from Foster Farms chicken. Although 42 percent of them had to be hospitalized, thankfully none had died by that point.

In my earliest years of growing up, we didn’t go to the store to buy our meat. Our meat was on the hoof, so to speak. Everyone butchered their own meat. It was in the late fall or early winter (in cold weather) when the hogs were killed, butchered and cured. However, as I remember it, cattle were butchered very seldom. At out house, a big black kettle was placed over the fire where water was boiled. Next, the hog was stuck with a knife and the main artery severed to kill it, and it was hung head down for the blood to all drain out. Then the hog was immersed for several minutes in the kettle of boiling water.

meat origin labelling but the EU executive's position remains unclear.

MEPs fiercely oppose the European Commission on the meat labelling of ready meals. In an open letter written this Thursday (10 October), EU lawmakers asked the Commission to impose origin labels on lasagnas and other types of frozen dishes, eight months after the horsemeat scandal.

Chicken nuggets are definitely made of chicken - just maybe not the parts you want to eat. Researchers in Mississippi conducted an 'autopsy' of chicken nuggets from two fast food chains in Jackson and confirmed what we all suspected about the mystery-meat medallions: they aren't too meaty. The first chicken nugget tested was made up of about 50 per cent muscle tissue from the breast or thigh and the rest was made up of unpalatable parts: fat, blood vessels, and nerves.
