Our Body Has the Ability to Heal Itself

Our Body Has the Ability to Heal Itself | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Can the mind heal the body? Yes! The placebo effect is proof that this is the case. This implies that the brain communicates with the body in ways that science does not yet fully understand.

So what is happening in the brain that is making the body change? Communication from the brain takes place via hormones and neurotransmitters. Negative emotions and negative thoughts initiate stress hormones which activate a physiological stress response that puts us in the protective ‘fight or flight’ mode.

Fortunately there is also a counter-balancing ‘relaxation response’. This has the effect of turning off the stress response, and releases healing hormones throughout the body. These natural repair mechanisms that we all have only turn on when the nervous system is relaxed. Some researchers believe that this ‘relaxation response’ explains the placebo effect.

How can we change this balance in our own body? One study showed that we have more than 50 stress responses per day. If we are lonely, depressed or unhappy there will be even more of these stress responses. To counteract this, if we change the balance so that we have more positive feelings, expectations of improvement, and feelings of being cared for and nurtured, it could explain why our body is able to bring about its own healing. Under these circumstances the nervous system will be relaxed and allow our natural repair systems to function optimally.

We can achieve this relaxed, content and positive healing state in many ways, including meditation, creative self-expression, exercise and activity, being with friends, being in a loving relationship, engaging in work that is personally fulfilling, laughing, caring for others, appreciating nature and animals, etc.

Try to regain respect for your body’s ability to heal itself, and provide it with the conditions to do so. Our natural state is health. You can learn more about this starting here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWQfe__fNbs

Exercise Helps Cancer Survivors Live Longer

Physical activity significantly extends the lives of male cancer survivors, a new study of 1,021 men has found.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

A study of 1,021 men has found that physical activity significantly extends the lives of male cancer survivors. There has been extensive research showing that among generally healthy, cancer-free populations, physical activity extends longevity. But there has been relatively little such research on physical activity among cancer survivors.

Researchers looked at 1,021 men (average age 71) who previously had been diagnosed with cancer. Compared with men who expended fewer than 2,100 kilojoules per week in physical activity, men who expended more than 12,600 kilojoules per week were 48% less likely to die of any cause during the follow-up period.

There were similar findings for mortality from cancer and cardiovascular disease: the most physically active cancer survivors were 38% less likely to die of cancer and 49% less likely to die of cardiovascular disease.

Extended Evolution of Bacteria and Humans of Certain Ancestry Affects Gastric Cancer Risk

Extended Evolution of Bacteria and Humans of Certain Ancestry Affects Gastric Cancer Risk | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Researchers studied two Colombian villages and discovered that the risk of gastric cancer (caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria) depends on both the ancestry of the person and the ancestry of the microbe they carry.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

About half of the world's population is infected with Helicobacter pylori. The microbe usually only causes minor gastric inflammation, but it is also the primary cause of gastric cancer, which is the second-leading cause of death by cancer worldwide.

Research has revealed that the risk of developing gastric cancer depends heavily on both the ancestry of the person and the ancestry of Helicobacter pylori with which that person is infected.  The research team studied 233 people from two populations in Colombia, one located in the mountain village of Tuquerres and the other in the coastal village of Tumaco. Rates of H. pylori infection in the two communities are similar (about 90%), but the rate of gastric cancer is about 25 times higher in the mountain community.

It was found that the interaction between H. pylori and human ancestry entirely accounted for the difference in geographical disease risk. The researchers concluded that coevolution among humans and H. pylori reduced gastric cancer disease risk in the people of African descent. People of Amerindian descent would have been exposed to European or African strains of H. pylori much more recently, meaning that there would not have been time for coevolution to take place and explaining the worse outcomes among the villagers in the mountain community.

Pepsi Sodas Found to Contain Carcinogenic Substances Above Allowable Limit

Pepsi Sodas Found to Contain Carcinogenic Substances Above Allowable Limit | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
A chemical found in many sodas may be dangerous to your health, Consumer Reports says. And no, it's not sugar (this time).
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

The chemical 4-methylimidazole, or 4-MeI, found in many sodas is used to produce the golden-brown color and usually labeled as "caramel coloring”. According to the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer, and the state of California, the chemical may possibly cause cancer.

In California foods exceeding the limit of 29 micrograms of exposure to 4-MeI for the average consumer per day have to carry a warning label that reads: "WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer."

A lab analysis of sodas purchased in California found that one 12-ounce serving of Pepsi One or Malta Goya exceeded the levels permitted without having a warning label. It was further found that Pepsi One purchased by the group Consumer Reports in December in New York contains four times as much 4-MeI as the same product bought that same month in California.

In a statement to Consumer Reports, PepsiCo Inc. said data indicate that the average person consumes less than one-third a can of diet soda per day; therefore, its product meets the California standard, even if a complete serving exceeds that limit.

Hopes Raised for A Blood Test for Early Detection of Pancreatic Cancer

Hopes Raised for A Blood Test for Early Detection of Pancreatic Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Without any screening tests, pancreatic cancer is rarely diagnosed early, and has become the fourth-leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. Steve Jobs died of it at the age of 56 in 2011. Read this article by Elizabeth Armstrong Moore on CNET News.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

99% of people diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer are dead within five years, and without any screening tests, it's usually found late. Patients who are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer have two options: Let the disease run its course or surgically remove part of the pancreas. Unfortunately, because the cancer is typically found so late, even most patients who undergo surgery are not cured.

Danish scientists report in the Journal of the American Medical Association that a new blood test may help detect pancreatic cancer early by looking for specific genetic biomarkers in a blood sample. It is early days and the tests are producing a high number of false positive results. Although the scientists say that by combining their tests with a CA19-9 test (this compound is higher in the majority of patients with pancreatic cancer), patients with positive results could get MRI or CT scans to confirm them.

PSA Test for Prostate Cancer No Longer a Standard Recommendation

PSA Test for Prostate Cancer No Longer a Standard Recommendation | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Government advisory panel recommends against PSA test because of false positive risk, damage caused by treatment; but some experts argue not treating cancer is more dangerous
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is a blood test that looks for a specific protein that is only produced by the prostate. The higher the levels of PSA, the more likely the person has prostate cancer.

If someone is found to have an elevated level, they are often recommended to have a biopsy taken from their prostate. This involves inserting 12 needles into the prostate using an ultrasound and taking a random sampling of tissue.

A study suggested that 40% of men who receive a positive test result have a cancer too slow-growing to be deadly. The biopsies, radiation, surgery and other treatments can cause serious side effects, including impotence, incontinence and other complications -- even death. A U.S. government advisory panel has recommended against healthy, symptom-free men of any age getting the PSA test.

The Influenza Vaccine – Things You Should Know and Consider First

Did you know that during the 2012-2013 flu season, the flu vaccine's effectiveness was found to be just 56 percent across all age groups?
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

This year there are 12 influenza vaccines on the market manufactured by seven different drug companies. It is important everybody understands what is in these vaccine, their side-effects profile, and effectiveness profile.

Some of the vaccines contain the toxic heavy metal mercury in the form of thimerosal, and some contain formaldehyde.

In the past these vaccines have typically been grown using eggs. This year one has been produced using dog kidney cells, and another produced using army worm caterpillar cells for production. The idea behind this is to have a bigger yield and to produce the vaccines more quickly.

In determining whether you want to be vaccinated and which vaccine, it is a matter of assessing your risk of acquiring influenza, and what health risk that may produce, and offsetting that against the risk to your health that the vaccine itself may cause.

Low Melatonin Levels Linked to Higher Risk of Prostate Cancer

Low Melatonin Levels Linked to Higher Risk of Prostate Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Men's risk of prostate cancer may be linked with their melatonin levels, a new study suggests.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Research presented yesterday at the American Association for Cancer Research Conference on Advances in Prostate Cancer Research in San Diego has revealed that men who had higher levels of melatonin in their urine had a 75% decreased risk of advanced prostate cancer, compared with men with lower melatonin levels.

Melatonin is a hormone produced in the brain by the pineal gland in response to darkness. The level of melatonin typically increases in the evening, promoting sleep, and peaks during the night. Levels then fall in the morning, as sunlight and indoor light increases, encouraging wakefulness.

However people who have irregular sleep schedules from shift work hours, as well as people who wake up a lot during the night and turn on the lights, disrupt their circadian rhythm — the body's internal clock — and produce less melatonin.

BPA Exposure May Triple Risk Of Prostate Cancer

BPA Exposure May Triple Risk Of Prostate Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Exposure to BPA from plastic bottles and containers during early development may triple the risk of prostate cancer later in life.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Research from University of Illinois provides direct evidence that exposure to Bisphenol A(BPA) during fetal development, at the levels we see in our day-to-day lives, increases the risk for prostate cancer in human prostate tissue.

Prevailing research suggests that the hormone estrogen can drive cancer development in prostate stem cells. Exposure to BPA can “reprogram” these stem cells to become more sensitive to this hormone. BPA exposure comes from commonly used water bottles, canned goods and receipts and is difficult to avoid.

Two Proteins Found to Destroy Migrating Cancer Cells

Two Proteins Found to Destroy Migrating Cancer Cells | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Researchers have demonstrated how white blood cells coated with a cancer-killing protein causes metastasizing cancer cells travelling through the bloodstream to implode on contact.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests it is possible not only to locate migrating cancer cells, but to annihilate them before they have a chance to set up secondary tumors.

For their study, the Cornell team used human blood samples and later, mice, to test the effect of two proteins: an adhesive called E-selectin, and another protein called TRAIL (Tumor Necrosis Factor Related Apoptosis-Inducing Ligand - a protein that triggers suicide in tumor cells). Together the two proteins formed a sticky coating around leukocytes - white blood cells found everywhere in the bloodstream.

The cancer cells 'kill themselves' when in contact with these TRAIL-coated white blood cells. When they targeted the cancer cells in saline directly with the proteins, the success rate was 60%. But when they tried again with a model of flowing blood that has forces, mixing and other conditions similar to the human body, the kill rate shot up to 100%.

China’s Pollution Causing Lung Cancer

China’s Pollution Causing Lung Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
BEIJING — The youngest known lung cancer patient in eastern China is an 8-year-old girl whose home is next to a dust-choked road in heavily industrialized Jiangsu province.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

At a time when cigarette smoking is on the decline in China, the nation is facing an explosion of lung cancer cases.

The youngest known lung cancer patient in eastern China is an 8-year-old girl whose home is next to a dust-choked road in heavily industrialized Jiangsu province. Another patient was a 14-year-old girl from Shanghai, the daughter of two nonsmokers with no family history of lung cancer. Bai Chunxue chairman of the Shanghai Respiratory Research Institute believes that the most probable cause is pollution.

Readings in Beijing and elsewhere in northern China frequently climb straight off the chart devised by the World Health Organization, which classifies particulate levels between 300 and 500 micrograms per cubic meter as hazardous.

The northeastern city of Harbin practically closed down for two days in October when readings approached 1,000, creating air so murky that residents said they couldn't see their dogs at the end of the leash.

It is shocking the levels of pollution in Beijing. Sadly in HK, we are also exposed to high levels of air pollution. Do we need an explosion of lung cancer before the government does something?

You can prevent it by using "Turboforte",  a simple, lightweight pipe-shaped respiratory physiotherapy device designed to aid mucous clearing by providing positive pressure and a vibration within the lungs, hence helping to maintain bronchial hygiene. This device was designed for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (C.O.P.D) which affects more people world wide than Obesity. This device is scientifically supported and medically acclaimed by respiratory specialists worldwide. It is effectively used by Asthma,Cystic Fybrosis, Emphysema and Bronchitis sufferers.

Stress Reduction – Practice Finding More Joy in Your Life’s Journey

Stress Reduction – Practice Finding More Joy in Your Life’s Journey | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Stress reduction is critical to the healing process and to support a healthy immune system – especially for cancer patients.

There are many stress reduction programs available, ranging from various exercise activities to professional counseling. However there are also some very simple things you can do to commence and practice stress reduction for yourself, including:

- Make periodic deep breathing become one of your habits. To help you to relax, try taking three deep breaths each time you sit down at your desk or at the meal table.

- Meditate for just 1-minute each day. Yes you can go and read books and consult experts, and do courses. But simply try sitting quietly yourself and do “body scanning” of your own body. This involves focusing your mind and energy on each section of the body from head to toe.

- Listen to others. Focus on really listening when someone is talking to you. Become aware of your listening ability. You will find that you begin to understand more of what others are communicating to you before you rush in with comments or disagreements.

- Question your own thoughts. As you hear or see things, begin to question the thoughts that arise in your mind before you react to them. This will enable you to ‘see’, realize and learn from your own thought patterns.

- Give your full attention to whatever activity you are engaged in at the time.

Try not to take on stress in a stressful way. Instead, take small steps forward.

Anti-Perspirant Deodorants Linked to Breast Cancer

Anti-Perspirant Deodorants Linked to Breast Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
There is alarming new evidence of a possible link between anti-perspirants and breast cancer. Scientists found chemicals used in the underarm products in cancerous breast tumours.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Scientists found chemicals called parabens, used as preservatives in the underarm products, in cancerous breast tumors. Dr Darbre, a breast cancer specialist at the University of Reading, and lead author of the report, said the research added to growing evidence of a link between increasing rates of the disease and the huge market for underarm sprays and roll-ons. Cosmetics manufacturers and cancer charities said there was no proof of the threat and called for further research.

Dr. Darbre comments that "some women may use vast quantities and never have any problems but women with genetic histories of breast cancer may be extra sensitive to these chemicals. I would love to see women with a family history of breast cancer stop using them as a precautionary measure. It's going to be very difficult to ever prove that underarm cosmetics are a cause of breast cancer but this is another piece in the jigsaw that fits."

Parabens mimic the effects of the hormone oestrogen. As well as body odor products, parabens are found in many other cosmetics including perfumes, sun creams and body lotions, and are used as preservatives in a variety of foods. This was the first study to confirm that parabens can be absorbed in human tissue.

Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

A critical part of the healing process for cancer patients is to remain positive and refrain from negativity in one’s thoughts and emotions.

Experiments by Dr. Masaru Emoto from Japan demonstrated more than 10 years ago that human thoughts and intentions do indeed alter physical reality. His experiments showed that the molecular structure of water was influenced and altered by human thought. As we are all made up of 70%+ of water this realization is of significant importance to us.

The rice experiment is another famous Dr. Emoto demonstration of the power of negative thinking (and conversely, the power of positive thinking). Dr Emoto placed portions of cooked rice into two containers. On one container he wrote “thank you” and on the other “you fool”. He then instructed school children to say the labels on the jars out loud everyday when they passed them by. After 30 days, the rice in the container with positive thoughts had barely changed, while the other was moldy and rotten.

Stay positive.

World's oldest-known living cancer '11,000 years old'
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

It is very rare for cancer cells to leave the bodies of their original hosts and spread to other individuals. Cancer typically occurs when a single cell in the body mutates and divides out of control.

However a team led by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute near Cambridge has found a very rare form of cancer that is sexually transmissible in the dog population. Known as dog-transmissible cancer, researchers were able to pinpoint its origin to 11,000 years ago, and identify it as the world's oldest-known living cancer.

"The genome of the transmissible dog cancer will help us to understand the processes that allow cancers to become transmissible," said Prof Sir Mike Stratton, Director of the Sanger Institute.

A study in mice suggests that the earliest form of breast cancer may one day be treated without surgery
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Study results published in Science Translational Medicine earlier this month, suggest that it may be possible to stop some abnormal cancer growths from becoming potentially life-threatening tumors.

About 25% of newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer in the U.S. consist of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which has long been thought of as the earliest stage of cancer. As there is no way of knowing whether DCIS will spread and develop into a tumor, standard treatment is often a lumpectomy (in which the abnormal growth and some surrounding tissue are surgically removed) or sometimes a mastectomy, often followed by radiation and chemotherapy.

A treatment to prevent DCIS lesions from turning into invasive tumors is now being explored by researchers at Harvard University, which injects an RNA particle that interferes with or turns off a specific, cancer-causing gene. The treatment is called RNA interference, or RNAi, and tests on animals so far are producing promising results.

Exposure to low levels of bisphenol A during development may make men more susceptible to prostate cancer later in life, according to a new study published Tuesday.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

A study by a team from the University of Illinois at Chicago, based on a new model of implanting human stem cells into mice, is the first to link early-life BPA exposure to human prostate cancer. It adds to a growing body of research that suggests exposure to low doses of the chemical alters cells and can lead to diseases later in life.

BPA acts as an estrogen and previous research has linked elevated estrogen levels to increased risk of prostate cancer. If there is exposure early in life to an estrogenic compound – such as BPA – it reprograms our stem cells," said Gail Prins, a University of Illinois at Chicago researcher and lead author of the study.

BPA is found in the lining of some food cans, is used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics and can even be found in some paper receipts.

Disabling Key Protein ‘MYC’ Found to Kill Cancer Cells | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Researchers have discovered that by disabling a protein found in lymphoma cells they can limit the cancer's growth and ultimately make it disappear.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Researchers have discovered that by disabling a protein found in lymphoma cells they can limit the cancer's growth and ultimately make it disappear.

Up to 70 per cent of human cancers have unusually high levels of a protein known as MYC. The protein causes cancerous changes in cells by forcing them into abnormally rapid growth. ''What we've found is that these MYC-driven cancers are exquisitely dependent on a protein called MCL-1 for their continued survival,'' said molecular biologist and lymphoma researcher Gemma Kelly. ''So if we disable this protein called MCL-1 then the cancer cells die.''

The research team from the institute's molecular genetics of cancer division, including Marco Herold and Andreas Strasser, used cell samples taken from patients diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma. These cells were then used to grow more cells in culture for research to assess how to stop MCL-1 from functioning. Professor Strasser said in many cases, even a 50 per cent reduction in the levels of MCL-1 would kill the majority of cancer cells allowing a patient to go into long-term remission.
