New Invention is a Breakthrough for Simple and Accurate Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer

New Invention is a Breakthrough for Simple and Accurate Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
The new test – described as potentially the biggest breakthrough in prostate cancer diagnosis in 25 years – does not involve a rectal examination.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Studies show that a new and simple urine test for prostate cancer is twice as reliable as the existing blood test that measures the levels of the protein, prostate specific antigen, or PSA.

The inventor of the test, Hardev Pandha, a professor of medical oncology, said: ‘This new test could lead to faster detection that could save hundreds of lives and also offers the potential for huge cost savings.’

The new test uses a urine sample, dispensing with the need for needles. It searches the urine for a protein called EN2, which is not made by healthy people but is pumped out by tumors. In trials, it detected about 70 per cent of prostate cancers, making it twice as accurate as the PSA test.

BPA Levels Higher in Men With Prostate Cancer

BPA Levels Higher in Men With Prostate Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Newsweek BPA Levels Higher in Men With Prostate Cancer: Study Newsweek It also mimics human estrogen in the body, and studies have linked it to breast cancer, diabetes, obesity, and hormone abnormalities in children, though what doses are dangerous...
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

A new study published in the journal PlosOne found that men with prostate cancer have Bisphenol-A (BPA) in their urine at levels 2- to 4-fold higher than cancer-free men. BPA concentrations were especially high in prostate cancer patients under the age of 40, when aging is less of a contributing factor to the development of prostate cancer.

BPA mimics human estrogen in the body, and studies have linked it to breast cancer, diabetes, obesity, and hormone abnormalities in children, though what doses are dangerous is a matter of debate. In animals, researchers have found BPA able to switch on or off genes that block or promote tumor growth, allowing cancers to develop.

Does Aspirin Fight Cancer, and Should it be Used as a Preventative and Therapeutic Agent?

Does Aspirin Fight Cancer, and Should it be Used as a Preventative and Therapeutic Agent? | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Aspirin, a medicine cabinet staple for fighting heart attacks and headaches, is also a powerful weapon against cancer, a growing body of research shows. “As mundane as it is, it’s really an incredible drug,” said Dr. John Baron, a professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, who studies aspirin and cancer prevention. “My general opinion is that aspirin is probably good for a large majority of the adult population.” The groups most likely to benefit from aspirin’s anti-cancer powers, research suggests, are those at extra risk for colon cancer, and people between ages 50 and 75, said Dr. Andrew Chan, a gastroenterologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Many studies have shown benefits for the use of aspirin as a preventative measure for heart disease and also cancer. However some of the studies are focused on people who have lower risk of side-effects from aspirin use.

You are encouraged to investigate further and understand the research for yourself before blindly being led along by others. Bear in mind that aspirin is still a drug and there are indeed risks of side effects.

Researchers also still need to learn why aspirin may be beneficial in fighting cancer, how much aspirin people should take, and for how long, and which group of people are best served by such an approach. Aspirin is a generic medication, so there are no large drug companies encouraging further research.

Thyroid Cancer Incidence Increases

Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

The Journal of the American Medical Association - Otolaryngol Head Neck Surgery published a study highlighting the fact that since 1975, the incidence of thyroid cancer has nearly tripled, from 4.9 to 14.3 per 100 000 individuals.

The absolute increase in thyroid cancer in women (from 6.5 to 21.4 = 14.9 per 100 000 women) was almost 4 times greater than that of men (from 3.1 to 6.9 = 3.8 per 100 000 men). The mortality rate from thyroid cancer was stable between 1975 and 2009 (approximately 0.5 deaths per 100 000).

The increased incidence suggests that it is not an epidemic of disease but rather an epidemic of diagnosis. Many cancers, such as thyroid cancer, may grow so slowly as to not warrant any treatment. The balance between over-screening and over-treatment needs to be kept in mind as part of the therapeutic plan.

Mammogram Screenings Don't Reduce Cancer Death Rates

Mammogram Screenings Don't Reduce Cancer Death Rates | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Yearly mammography screenings for women ages 40 to 59 do not reduce breast cancer deaths, even though they make a diagnosis of illness more likely, according to a long-term study of nearly 90,000 Canadian women.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

A long-term study, published in the British Medical Journal, of 89,835 Canadian women found absolutely no benefit in terms of reduction of deaths for women ages 40 to 59 from the use of mammography, according to the study leader Dr. Anthony Miller, an epidemiologist at the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Mammography all too often finds small cancers that would never become dangerous if left alone. Roughly half of all cancers found by mammography — yet undetected through physical examination — fell into this category, the study authors wrote.

Experts have been arguing the merits of breast X-rays since 2009, when a government panel recommended that most women under 50 could safely skip the test. The researchers found that women who got mammograms were more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer, but that the test did not reduce their risk of dying from the disease. They calculated that 22% of the cancers found on mammograms were over-diagnosed. That means that for every 424 women who were screened, one received unnecessary cancer treatment.

The American Cancer Society and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend annual mammograms for women beginning at age 40, and the National Cancer Institute advises women in their 40s to have the test once every year or two. The Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care advises women to have mammograms every two to three years between the ages of 50 and 74.

Surgery Involving Morcellation for Uterine Fibroids Can Spread Tumors

Surgery Involving Morcellation for Uterine Fibroids Can Spread Tumors | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Concerns are increasing among doctors about the safety of a procedure performed on tens of thousands of women a year in the United States who undergo surgery to remove fibroid tumors from the uterus, or to remove the entire uterus.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Uterine fibroids are common for many women. One of the surgical procedures to remove them is called morcellation, which cuts tissue into pieces that can be pulled out through tiny incisions. The technique is part of minimally invasive surgery, which avoids big incisions, shortens recovery time and reduces the risks of blood loss, infection and other complications.

But problems have emerged with the procedure, most likely from the power device. The technique can spray bits of uterine tissue or fibroids around inside the abdomen like seeds. Even benign tissue (fibroids are benign) can take hold and grow on organs where it does not belong, causing pain, infection or bowel obstruction.

Uterine fibroids are generally benign. However in a few cases, a rare and hard-to-diagnose uterine tumor called a sarcoma was hidden in the uterus or mistaken for a fibroid, and morcellation apparently spread cancer cells through the patient's abdomen. Advanced cancer followed.

Study Reveals How Cancer Cells Thrive Using Glutamine in Oxygen-Starved Tumors

Study Reveals How Cancer Cells Thrive Using Glutamine in Oxygen-Starved Tumors | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
A new study identifies the molecular pathway that enables cancer cells to grow in areas of a tumor where oxygen levels are low, a condition called hypoxia.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Researchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCC) have studied cancer cell growth in areas of a tumor where oxygen levels are low. The study focuses on how cancer cells use the amino acid glutamine, the most common amino acid found free in the bloodstream.

Under normal oxygen levels, healthy cells use glutamine largely to produce energy, with a small amount diverted to make fatty acids and lipids. But when oxygen levels drop in areas of a growing tumor, the hypoxic conditions activate a gene called HIF1, initiating a pathway that shifts the use of glutamine away from energy production and to the synthesis of lipids needed for cell proliferation.

Glutamine is an important neurotransmitter. So blocking glutamine metabolism is not the answer. Instead a strategy may be to redirect the glutamine metabolism of a tumor where oxygen levels are low, to make it follow the normal-oxygen pathway, according to principal investigator Nicholas Denko, PhD, MD, associate professor of radiation oncology at the OSUCCC.

Medical Imaging (CT Scans) Causing Cancer – Minimize Their Use for Your Own Safety

Medical Imaging (CT Scans) Causing Cancer – Minimize Their Use for Your Own Safety | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Overused CT scans are exposing patients to dangerous levels of radiation.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

According to many experts, radiation from medical imaging is one of the major contributing factors to society’s increased cancer rates. Exposure to medical radiation has increased more than six-fold between the 1980s and 2006, according to the National Council on Radiation Protection & Measurements.

CT (computed tomography) scans are one of the main culprits. A CT scan uses X-rays to make detailed pictures of structures inside the body. The radiation doses of CT scans (a series of X-ray images from multiple angles) are 100 to 1,000 times higher than conventional X-rays. There is distressingly little evidence of better health outcomes associated with the current high rate of scans. There is, however, evidence of its harms. CTs, once rare, are now routine. One in 10 Americans undergo a CT scan every year, and many of them get more than one.

A single CT scan exposes a patient to the amount of radiation that epidemiologic evidence shows can be cancer-causing. The risks have been demonstrated directly in two large clinical studies in Britain and Australia. Doses for medical imaging should be as low as reasonably achievable. But there are no specific guidelines for what these doses are, and thus there is considerable variation within and between institutions. The dose at one hospital can be as much as 50 times stronger than at another.

This growth of CT scan usage is a result of multiple factors, including a desire for early diagnoses, higher quality imaging technology, direct-to-consumer advertising and the financial interests of doctors and imaging centers. CT scanners cost millions of dollars. Having made that investment, purchasers are strongly incentivized to use them.

Consumers can go to the Choosing Wisely website to learn about the most commonly overused tests.

Sugar Impairs Your Immune System

Sugar Impairs Your Immune System | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Research shows this food could impair immunity by 50%
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Sugar consumption has been shown to impair the immune system and make us more susceptible to disease, including cancer.

Considering the amount of sucrose and other refined sugars present in typical modern-day diets, particularly in the Standard American Diet, it follows that many persons have significantly compromised immune systems, which then opens them up to higher risks of numerous chronic diseases such as cancer.

The amount of glucose we consume has a corresponding adverse effect on the function of our white blood cells. In other words, the higher the amount of sugar ingested, the higher the degree of immunity impairment.

Sugar contains glucose and fructose. Fructose goes to our liver. The liver will turn excess fructose into liver fat which can trigger many of the metabolic diseases. Too much fructose shuts down the part of the brain that tells you when you have eaten sufficient food.

In terms of cancer many researchers feel that excess sugar consumption can increase the probability of cancer, and make the outcome worse of people who already have cancer. Excess fructose in the liver will cause the pancreas to produce more insulin. Excess insulin changes cancer tumors to attract more glucose, which then use that to fuel the growth of cancer.

To learn more about the problems and consumption of sugar take a look at this 45-minute documentary - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDaYa0AB8TQ

Your Mouth Hygiene and Dental Plaque May Be the Cause of Your Cancer

Your Mouth Hygiene and Dental Plaque May Be the Cause of Your Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Oral pathogens can make their way to distant parts of your anatomy and cause serious problems.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Our mouth is a host to different types of bacteria and viruses, some of which have the ability to pass from our gums to the bloodstream and into our heart. Other viruses and bacteria in our mouth are linked to the cause of certain cancers.

Gingivitis (inflammation of the gum tissue), dental plaque, and dental interventions, such as root canals and cavitations following tooth extractions, can be the breeding ground for pathogenic microorganisms and their toxins that can circulate in the blood causing infections and chronic inflammation throughout the body.

Viruses:
A study published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research reports that “Poor oral health, which includes dental problems and gum disease, is an independent risk factor for oral HPV [human papillomavirus] infection, and by extension, could also contribute to oral cancers." In this study, participants with poor oral health had a 56 percent higher rate of HPV infection than those with healthy mouths. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that about 60 percent of oropharyngeal cancers are related to HPV, but according to the latest study, it could be as high as 80 percent.

Viruses are estimated to cause 15 to 20 percent of all cancers. Most viral infections do not lead to tumor formation as several factors influence the progression from viral infection to cancer development. Some of these factors include the host's genetic makeup, mutation occurrence, exposure to cancer causing agents, and immune impairment. Viruses typically initiate cancer development by suppressing the host's immune system, causing inflammation over a long period of time, or by altering host genes.

Bacteria:
Recent studies have linked the anaerobic bacterium, Fusobacterium nucleatum, found in dental plaque with cancer. Case Western Reserve University researchers found that some malignant colorectal tumors are caused by F. nucleatum. Harvard researchers also established a link between F. nucleatum and the initiation of colorectal tumors.

The common link to cancer and a variety of health problems is chronic inflammation in your body. This can originate in the mouth or elsewhere and be caused by poor hygiene, viruses, bacteria and many other factors.

Thermograms - A Safe, Accurate and Reliable Alternative to Mammogram | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Thermograms - a safe, accurate and reliable alternative to mammograms
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

There is considerable criticism and concern about the benefit of mammograms as a diagnostic tool for breast cancer. An alternative diagnostic method is to use a thermogram. Thermograms are safe, nontoxic, highly accurate and inexpensive. There is no pain, no physical compression of the breasts, and no rays or radiation enter the body. Unlike mammograms, which become less accurate with denser breast tissue, thermography's accuracy is not affected by tissue density.

Thermography is based on infrared heat emission by the body's tissues. As bodily cells go about their usual metabolic processes, they give out heat. Cancerous tumors tend to emit more infrared heat than their healthy counterparts, i.e. they are hotter.

As compared to normal tissue, cancer growths are also regulated to a much lower extent by the autonomic nervous system. For example, when cool air is blown over the breasts, the autonomic nervous system lowers the amount of blood flow to normal breast tissue as a means of temperature regulation. The blood and blood vessels at the tumor site, however, are not under autonomic control and do not become cooler - thermography would thus show the abnormal tissues up as "hot spots".

While thermography sounds rather new and unconventional, progressive physicians in Europe and the United States have actually already been using this technology since 1962. Once more women demand other screening protocols, the availability of techniques such as thermography should slowly increase.

Vitamin C Proven to Be Beneficial for Cancer Patients

Vitamin C Proven to Be Beneficial for Cancer Patients | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Large doses of vitamin C may boost chemotherapy’s ability to kill cancer cells, US researchers have found.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Scientists at the University of Kansas report that intravenous vitamin C could be a potentially safe, effective and low-cost treatment for ovarian and other cancers.

In a study of 27 patients newly diagnosed with stage 3 or 4 ovarian cancer, researchers found that patients who were injected with a high dose of vitamin C, along with their chemotherapy, experienced fewer negative side effects from their treatment. They also found that vitamin C can help to kill cancer cells without harming healthy cells.

Dr. Linus Pauling, two time Nobel Laureate, together with Dr. Ewan Cameron pioneered the use of high-dose C in cancer in the 1960s. Cameron and Pauling found that vitamin C helped cancer patients live about four times longer than cancer patients not given vitamin C. They administered high-dose vitamin C in the form of sodium ascorbate given orally and intravenously to treat more than 1,000 cancer patients.

The late Dr. Charles Moertel of the Mayo Clinic, who opposed nutritional therapies for cancer, disproved Pauling’s thesis in a published trial in 1979. Although, as made very clear by Dr. Pauling, Dr. Moertel did not follow the Pauling/Cameron instructions or regimen, and that the results of the Mayo Clinic study on cancer and Vitamin C have been misrepresented by the Mayo Clinic investigators.

Vitamin C has no patent potential for pharmaceutical companies. This is likely to affect clinical trial opportunities.

Vitamin C Has a Therapeutic Benefit in Cancer

Vitamin C Has a Therapeutic Benefit in Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Intravenous vitamin C – combined with conventional chemotherapy – can kill cancer cells, the University of Kansas Medical Center reported.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Vitamin C was used in the 1970s as an unorthodox therapy for cancer and is used by complementary and alternative medicine physicians.  However, conventional physicians remain skeptical about its therapeutic benefits.

A study, published in Science Translational Medicine, aimed to determine the cellular mechanisms by which pharmalogic vitamin C has a therapeutic benefit in cancer. In the study of 27 patients newly diagnosed with stage 3 or stage 4 ovarian cancer, researchers found that patients who received a high-dose of intravenous vitamin C, along with conventional cancer therapy of paclitaxel or carboplatin, experienced fewer toxic effects from the chemotherapy drugs.

Researchers also conducted a rodent study and observed that an intravenous infusion of vitamin C was able to kill cancer cells without noticeable toxicity or pathological changes in the liver, kidney or spleen.

Nanoparticles in Tattoo Ink May Cause Cancer

Nanoparticles in Tattoo Ink May Cause Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Nanoparticles are widely found in tattoo ink, but did you know that there may be health risks associated with these particles?
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Tattoo inks are largely unregulated and known to contain cancer-causing compounds. University of Bradford researchers have found that the tattoo process remodels collagen (the body’s main connective tissue), and nanoparticles from tattoo ink were found to exist in both the collagenous network of the skin as well as around blood vessels. This suggests that the ink particles are leaving the surface of the skin and traveling elsewhere in the body, where they could potentially enter organs and other tissues.

Nanoparticles are ultramicroscopic in size, making them able to readily penetrate the skin and travel to underlying blood vessels and the bloodstream. Evidence suggests that some nanoparticles may induce toxic effects in the brain and cause nerve damage, and some may also be carcinogenic.

A Breast Cancer Screening Test That Finds Three Times More Breast Tumors

Working with a team of physicists, Dr. Deborah Rhodes developed a new tool for tumor detection that's 3 times as effective as traditional mammograms for women with dense breast tissue. The life-saving implications are stunning. So why haven't we heard of it? Rhodes shares the story behind the tool's creation, and the web of politics and economics that keep it from mainstream use.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Mammograms are one of the most complex of all radiology studies to interpret. Mammography relies on differences of appearance of the tumor compared to the background tissue. However both tumors and dense breast tissue appear white on a mammogram and the x-ray often can’t distinguish between the two. Mammograms find over 80% of tumors in fatty breasts but as few as 40% in extremely dense breasts.

Mammograms have been used since the 1960s with very few changes or innovations until digital mammography was approved in 2000. Digitial mammography is still an x-ray of the breast but the images can be stored and manipulated digitally in a similar way to a camera. However a study revealed that digital mammography was found to be generally no better than the traditional method. Although for women with dense breasts it did offer some advantages.

A few years ago another screening method was developed by a physicist and called molecular breast imaging (MBI). MBI analysis uses very light pain-free compression to do the test and exploits the different molecular behavior of tumors and it is therefore impervious to breast density. BMI can also detect tumors as small as 3mm in size.

In 2004 a research grant was approved to study 1,000 women with dense breasts, comparing the results of a screening mammogram to an MBI. The results were astonishing. Mammography found only 25% of the tumors. Whereas MBI found 83%. Apart from its effectiveness, the MBI technology uses only one-fifth of the radiation dose that is used in other technology.

MBI is as accurate as MRI and far less complex to interpret. It generates 4 images per breast. An MRI generates over 1,000 images. MBI is only a fraction of the cost of MRI. After achieving these remarkable results from the study it was rejected from publication in the medical journals.

It is evident that there are forces within the breast imaging world, and indeed the broader medical world, which prefer the status quo and are closed to important and potentially life-saving innovation.

Please watch Dr. Deborah Rhodes’ 21-minute video and decide for yourself. Dr. Deborah Rhodes is an expert at managing breast-cancer risk.

For your information, I understand that MBI is available at Capital Health System in Hopewell, New Jersey.
