Typical Western Diets of High Carbohydrate and Refined Sugars Found to Fuel Colon Cancer

Typical Western Diets of High Carbohydrate and Refined Sugars Found to Fuel Colon Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it

Western nations experience high levels of colon cancer, and carbo-loading gut microbes might explain why, says a new study in mice.

Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Westerners’ carb-rich diets have long been linked to high levels of cancer.  In country after country where people have switched to Western-style diets heavy in refined sugars such as high fructose corn syrup, the incidence of colorectal cancer has increased, says geneticist Scott Bultman of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

A study published in “Cell” magazine reported on the link between colon tumors and gut microbes. The researchers surmised that when microbes feast on carbohydrates, the germs must produce a chemical that pushes colon cells lacking the ability to repair DNA mismatches toward uncontrollably multiplying into tumors. To find that chemical, they looked to the colon contents of mice that ate low-carb diets or had received antibiotics. Those mice, compared with mice on regular [high-card] diets, had lower levels of a fatty acid called butyrate, one of the byproducts of microbes’ fermentation of carbohydrates.

The researchers then fed mice butyrate-enriched food. Those mice had more tumor polyps, suggesting that the path from Western diets to colon cancer relies on this bacterially produced chemical.

If the mouse experiments mimic human cancers, then shunning high-carbohydrate, Western diets could allay or prevent the disease for many people, says Bultman. “Following a well-balanced diet, with fewer refined sugars and more fiber, is good for the microbiome and likely has an effect on cancer predisposition.”

Senate Inquiry in Australia Reveals Oncologists Charging Cancer Patients Exorbitant Fees | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
SURGEONS are slugging cancer sufferers up to ten times the Medicare fee for lifesaving operations.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

An investigation has found that the practice of doctors over-charging cancer patients is “out of control”. Cancer patients in Australia are being charged by surgeons up to 10 times the standard Medicare fees for operations.

The exorbitant fees have placed a spotlight on medical excess as a Senate inquiry hears the details.

Rheumatologist and University of Melbourne Professor Peter Brooks has lashed out at his overcharging colleagues. “The specialist gaps are extraordinary, and I must say, having taught medical students for 50 years and being a specialist, I am embarrassed that my colleagues behave the way they do,” he told the Senate inquiry.

However, Australian Medical Association president Professor Brian Owler says the AMA has “no problem” with the present situation.

The exorbitant fees being charged by doctors are worrying private hospitals who complain in private fears about out of pocket expenses are driving the privately insured back to the public hospital system.

Breast Cancer Responds Equally Well to Gel Rather Than Oral Drug, and With Less Side Effects

Breast Cancer Responds Equally Well to Gel Rather Than Oral Drug, and With Less Side Effects | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Tamoxifen applied to the skin is shown by a study to be as effective as the pill version, with fewer problems.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

The drug tamoxifen is used to treat women with estrogen receptor-positive cancer, which relies on estrogen to grow. When taken for five years, the drug can cut in half the risk of recurrence of this type of cancer. Yet comes with many known side effects.

A gel has now been developed containing the drug tamoxifen that can be applied to the skin. Research published in Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, said that the gel was applied to the breasts of women diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS. All the women had DCIS that was sensitive to estrogen. The study found that after 6 to 10 weeks of gel application, the reduction in a marker for cancer cell growth in the breast tissue was similar to that of the orally administered tamoxifen.

Seema Khan, a surgical oncologist at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, and the lead author of the study said that the gel causes fewer side effects because the drug is concentrated in the breast tissue, and doesn’t circulate much in the blood. “The gel minimized exposure to the rest of the body and concentrated the drug in the breast where it is needed,” Khan said. “There was very little drug in the bloodstream, which should avoid potential blood clots as well as an elevated risk of uterine cancer.”

Scientists Reveal How THC from Cannabis Can Be Beneficial in Cancer Treatment

Scientists Reveal How THC from Cannabis Can Be Beneficial in Cancer Treatment | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Scientists at a British university have made a major breakthrough in revealing how cannabis could be used as a treatment to prevent the growth of cancer.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

A study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry carried out by a team from the University of East Anglia reveals how cannabis could be used as a treatment to prevent the growth of cancer.

Some reporters have suggested that this “could be a big boost for attempts to create a synthetic substitute for cannabis that can fight cancer in a targeted and safe way.” Dr. Peter McCormick, from UEA’s school of pharmacy, says “I hope that our research will lead to a safe synthetic equivalent being available in the future.”

The effectiveness of cannabis in the prevention and treatment of cancer is certainly not new. It was known about in the mid-1970s. There have been many studies done by eminent scientists, and in many countries cannabis is already used in the treatment of cancer. In addition there have been countless numbers of cancer patients who have used cannabis successfully according to anecdotal information.

However it seems those in the medical system conclude that “a safe synthetic equivalent’ must be developed before anyone can acknowledge that cannabis can be effective. Of course that synthetic equivalent will be patented and become profitable for its manufacturers. But, apart from the benefit to the manufacturer in generating profits, we must ask the question is a synthetic version actually needed.” For example, we know that common garlic has many medicinal properties. Yet we don’t need a synthetic version to derive those benefits. Just some food for thought.

7 Essentials for Healing and Preventing Cancer – From A Breast Cancer Survivor

In part one of three, Dr. V?ronique Desaulniers discusses the first four of what she calls the seven essentials for healing and preventing cancer. Find out w...

Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

These essential guidelines are from Dr. Veronique Desaulniers, who chose to heal her own breast cancer with evidence-based Natural Medicine and without the use of any toxic therapies.

1. Let food be your medicine – food contains many powerful nutrients, and is a true prescription for health.

2. Reduce toxic exposure - make conscious decisions about what you put into your immediate environment. Reduce chemicals in the home. Use less toxic products in your home and on your body.

3. Balance energy - we are energetic beings, affected by sleep, hormones and stress.

4. Heal emotional wounds – it is usually some form of trauma or emotional event that triggers the diagnosis of cancer. Our immune system is linked to our emotional center. Learn to be happy and to think happy thoughts. Look at cancer as a message of love – a communication from your body – a signal to look at your life and emotions, and to make things better in your life.

5. Embrace biological dentistry - understand the connection between dentistry and the body. Metal fillings are toxic. Root canals are essentially dead teeth that the body is trying to reject.

6. Repair the body with therapeutic plants – there are hundreds of different foods and herbs that can build the immune system and help kill cancer cells.

7. Adopt very early detection - many of the mainstream tests detect cancer too late. Thermography can detect inflammation and increased blood flow, which may be a precursor to cancer development. The HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test can detect hormones that cancer cells produce. The TK1 enzyme test can indicate rapid cell division by detecting high levels of DNA replication in cancer cells.

There are three short videos in which Dr. V describes her seven guidelines. Here are the links:

Molecular Biologist Explains How Compounds from the Cannabis Plant Completely Kill Cancer Cells and Have No Effect on Normal Cells

Dr. Christina Sanchez is a molecular biologist at Compultense University in Madrid Spain, her research led to the findings that THC does indeed kill cancer cells!…
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Dr. Christina Sanchez, a molecular biologist at Compultense University in Madrid Spain, has been working for the past 10 years on the anti-tumor effects of cannabinoids which are compounds found in the cannabis plant.

In the 1980s the body’s own cannabinoid receptors were discovered, which led to the understanding that our body must synthesize something that can bind to these receptors. A few years later the body’s own endo-cannabinoids were found, which are produced inside our bodies, and our endo-cannabinoid system was discovered.

We now know that the endo-cannabinoid system regulates a lot of our normal biological functions. Therefore the cannabis plant has enormous therapeutic potential.

During Dr. Sanchez’a research she discovered that tumor cells treated with the cannabinoid compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) resulted in eradication of the cancer and death of the cancer cells themselves. THC was found to have no toxic effects or side effects on non-tumor cells. Doctors and oncologists in Spain are very willing to use these compounds in treating cancer patients.

Another compound produced from the cannabis plat is cannabidiol (CBD). It has proven to be a very potent anti-oxidant that also kills cancer cells. The combination of THC and CBD produces a synergistic effect that potentiates the effect of THC.

There is ample evidence that the cannabinoids THC and CBD have anti-tumor properties, and have enormous therapeutic potential for the treatment of cancer, without the side effects experienced with chemotherapy.

Let us hope that doctors and the medical system in the USA, UK, Australia, and other countries can see beyond the profiteering from the use of chemotherapy, which is not designed to actually cure cancer, and instead open their minds to using proven and safe therapeutic approaches such as cannabinoids that actually target the cure of cancer without side effects and with less profit motivation.

Dietary Guidelines for Cancer Prevention

Dietary Guidelines for Cancer Prevention | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it

Six dietary guidelines – more aggressive than previous cancer prevention advice.

Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Doctors from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine have recommended guidelines for cancer prevention, and published their findings in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

It is encouraging to see doctors beginning to accept, adopt and recommend what many natural therapists have been advocating for such a long time.

Their cancer-prevention guidelines emphasize a plant-based food diet, which builds meals around fruits, vegetables and legumes. Their six dietary recommendations to reduce the risk of several types of cancer are as follows:

1. Limit or avoid dairy products to reduce the risk of prostate cancer

2. Limit or avoid alcohol to reduce the risk of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, colon, rectum, and breast

3. Avoid red and processed meats to reduce the risk of cancers of the colon and rectum

4. Avoid grilled, fried, and broiled meats to reduce the risk of cancers of the colon, rectum, breast, prostate, kidney, and pancreas

5. Consume soy products to reduce risk of breast cancer and to reduce the risk of recurrence and mortality for women previously treated for breast cancer

6. Emphasize fruits and vegetables to reduce risk of several common forms of cancer

There is considerable research to support these findings and recommendations. However the consumption of soy products is somewhat controversial, in that there is conflicting research about the benefits or dangers of soy products. What is commonly accepted is the benefits of fermented soy products.

BPA May Make Breast Cancer Cells Resistant To Treatment

BPA May Make Breast Cancer Cells Resistant To Treatment | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
A new study from Duke University suggests a chemical found in many plastics can make breast cancer cells resistant to treatment. The report discusses the
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Bisphenol A(BPA) is used to manufacture hard, polycarbonate plastics and is found in many food product containers such as cans, receipts and plastic water bottles.  It has been linked to cancers, neurological defects, diabetes and obesity. BPA exposure in the U.S. is widespread, with more than 90 percent of the population containing some levels of the chemical. Widespread use of BPA began about 50 years ago.

The BPA level found in cancer patients is about two- to four-fold higher than the median level found in larger population studies in America,” according to a recent study as quoted by lead study author Shuk-mei Ho, director of the Cincinnati Cancer Center and professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Now a new study from Duke University suggests that BPA neutralizes the effects of prescription drugs meant to keep cancerous cell from growing. The study also showed that BPA encourages the growth of the cancer.

Antibiotics Found to Increase Colon Cancer Risk

Antibiotics Found to Increase Colon Cancer Risk | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Taking some antibiotics, which reduces the diversity of bacteria in the gut, may slightly increase the risk of developing colon cancer, a new study suggests
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Results of a study showed people who had taken antibiotics, including penicillins, quinolones and metronidazole, were 8 to 11 percent more likely to develop colorectal cancer. There was no link between cancer risk and other antibiotic classes, anti-viral medications or anti-fungal drugs, according to the study.

The beneficial bacteria we have in our gut, known collectively as the gut microbiome, are important for normal functioning of the intestine. It is known that antibiotics destroys beneficial bacteria and therefore changing the balance of the microbiome.

However, it's unclear whether cancer causes a change in composition of gut bacteria, or an imbalance in gut bacteria partly contributes to cancer development, by providing a condition for tumors to grow.

Cancer Treatments Should be Aligned with Patient Priorities

Cancer Treatments Should be Aligned with Patient Priorities | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

If cancer patients better understood their disease stage and treatment options, they would make smarter—potentially less-expensive—choices, a panel of experts said during a discussion on cancer value and costs at the annual meeting of the Association of Community Cancer Centers.

In determining value for patients, physicians need to think about clinical benefits, toxicity of treatment and costs, said Paul Celano, MD, a medical oncologist at Greater Baltimore Medical Center.

The oncology community needs “to ensure [that] patients understand what their treatment options are, and that the care meets their personal goals and preferences, especially in the metastatic setting,” said John Fox, MD, the associate vice president of medical affairs at Priority Health, a health plan in Michigan. He cited a 2012 study showing that 81% of patients receiving chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer and 69% of patients receiving chemotherapy for metastatic lung cancer thought they were getting curative treatment.

Often, he added, patients get chemotherapy because that’s what their doctor told them they should do, “when, in fact, they might have been perfectly happy with other alternatives that were less expensive and less toxic.” Treatments should be aligned with patients’ priorities and preferences, he said. “If we’re investing $100,000 to prolong somebody’s life by two months, but that’s not what the patient wanted—if the trade-offs of life prolongation were offset by side effects and hospital time—then that’s a waste.”

A new study by researchers at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, finds that a parasite commonly found in cat feces - Toxoplasma gondii - holds promise for a vaccine against cancer.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

A parasite, Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) that resides in the intestines of cats has been found to have anti-cancer properties.

The researchers from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College in Hanover explain that when the parasite enters the human body, cells that effectively fight cancer - such as cytotoxic T cells - are produced as a response. The team says that although cancer can shut down the body's immune system, T. gondii can help restart it. They report that testing on mouse models with aggressive melanoma and ovarian cancer, the mice showed significantly high survival rates, saying that it stimulates "amazingly effective immunotherapy against cancers, superior to anything seen before."

It may hold promise for the development of future cancer treatments.

High Levels of “Bad” Cholesterol Found to Facilitate the Spread of Cancer

High Levels of “Bad” Cholesterol Found to Facilitate the Spread of Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it

A study shows for the first time that low density lipoprotein, or LDL, helps cancer cells migrate by providing them with velcro-like molecules that help take up root elsewhere.

Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

An important part of research and studies is to understand the processes of metastasis as cancer cells escape their primary tumor site, travel to other parts of the body and grow into secondary cancers. These metastases are often the major cause of death from cancer.

Most of the cells in the body stick to each other because they have velcro-like molecules on their surfaces called integrins. In recent years, researchers have discovered that integrins help cancer cells to escape tumors and settle elsewhere in the body. So an important question in cancer research is how to block integrins so they stop cancer cells from moving and spreading.

An international research study published in the journal Cell Reports, led by the University of Sydney in Australia has identified that "bad" cholesterol (low density lipoprotein or LDL) as an important culprit in metastasis. The researchers discovered that integrins can move from the surface of cells to the inside, and that cholesterol, one of the major lipids in the body, is needed to keep integrins on the surface of cancer cells. But the underlying mechanisms, until now, have been somewhat unclear.

Thomas Grewal, a senior author of this latest study and an associate professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy at Sydney, says they found high levels of "bad" cholesterol seem to help the integrins in cancer cells to move around, and in contrast, high levels of 'good' (high density lipoprotein or HDL) cholesterol seem to keep the integrins inside cells.

Knowing "how to manipulate and lower 'bad' cholesterol could significantly help to reduce the ability of cancer cells to spread," says Prof. Grewal, who with co-senior author Carlos Enrich, a professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Barcelona in Spain, has been working on the link between cholesterol and cancer for 15 years.

Study Discounts Testosterone Therapy for Early Prostate Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
A large new analysis has concluded that therapy to suppress the production of testosterone does not extend the lives of early-stage patients.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

A report published in JAMA Internal Medicine reveals that drug therapy to suppress the production of testosterone (known as androgen deprivation therapy) does not extend the lives of men with prostate cancer.

Dr. Grace L. Lu-Yao, a researcher at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and the lead author of the report, comments that “there are so many side effects associated with this therapy, and really little evidence to support its use, and for the majority of patients with localized prostate cancer, this is not a good option.”

The study followed tens of thousands of men with early prostate cancer for as long as 15 years and found that those who received the androgen deprivation therapy lived no longer on average than those who did not. There have been other studies in the past that have come to the same conclusions.

But experts have become increasingly concerned about the widespread use of this treatment in men with early-stage disease, particularly older patients whose slow-growing cancer is unlikely to have serious health consequences.

Cancer Patients Denied Access to Hospital Facilities

Doctors at Northampton General last used the state-of-the-art SABR radiotherapy device two months ago
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

It seems in England that finances are driving cancer treatments. Not only within families, but now in the very services available from the medical system. Apparently the National Health Service (NHS) in England has decided to save money by denying certain treatments to cancer patients.

The result is that some hospitals in England that have acquired expensive equipment for the treatment of cancer, are not permitted by the NHS to use it. So the equipment sits there idle and unused.

This is another example of how medicine is driven by money, rather than what may benefit patients. The implications of this for the future of cancer care, as well as all medical care, are quite frightening.

Our communities are indeed driven by money, and in many cases to the exclusion of other important beneficial aspects. More and more it seems that the developed world culture is progressively becoming even more focused on money-worship, profits and bottom-lines.

Ketogenic Diet Starves Cancer Cells | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
The ketogenic diet has proven effective at producing rapid weight loss and managing epilepsy, but researchers say the low-carb, high-fat keto diet can treat can
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet.

Such a diet will result in the body burning fats rather than carbohydrates. We know that the primary nutrient to support brain function is glucose, which is the result of the breakdown of carbohydrates. A low-carbohydrate diet will result in minimal production of glucose. In the absence of carbohydrate to convert to glucose, the liver will convert fats into fatty acids and then into ketone bodies. The ketone bodies then pass into the brain and replace glucose as its energy source. So in the absence of carbohydrate, the consumption of a high proportion of fats will supply adequate nutrients to the brain.

It is well known that a ketogenic diet starves cancer because cancer cells thrive on sugar and cannot survive on ketones. So by drastically limiting carbohydrates (as the low-carb, high-fat ketogenic diet does) you reduce glucose and insulin, and thus restrict the primary fuel for cancer cell growth.

I study cancer patients who were told they had only months to live, that there was nothing more that could be done, and yet are walking around cancer-free years later. I call these cases radical

Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Dr. Kelly Turner has analyzed more than 1,000 cancer patients who were told they had only months to live, and yet they all survived by curing themselves without any reliance on conventional medicine’s chemotherapy or radiation treatments.

She learned from studying these cases of radical remission that there are common threads among the behaviors of all these survivors. You can read all about this in her recently published book “Radical Remissions”.

After studying these remarkable survivors, it has given her a modified view of life and how to remain healthy and help yourself to overcome cancer. This has led to her making the following realizations:
- I need to be the CEO of my life
- No emotion is worth holding onto for too long
- I should really eat my veggies
- Laughter truly is the best medicine
- I should listen to my intuition

Development of Personalized Cancer Vaccine Will Use Patients Own Immune System to Overcome Cancer

Development of Personalized Cancer Vaccine Will Use Patients Own Immune System to Overcome Cancer | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Training immune cells with genes harvested from a patient’s own tumor could make an already promising new cancer treatment even better.
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

A new cancer therapy is under trial based on engaging the immune system to overcome the cancer.

It begins with a piece of the tumor material being surgically removed. RNA is then extracted from that material as a means of identifying all of the active genes present in the tumor.

The collection of active genes then eventually becomes a vaccine for the patient’s immune system. The vaccine preparation involves collecting white blood cells of the immune system from the patient. Those immune system cells are then modified with the tumor genes found earlier so that they can learn to target the mutations found specifically in the patient’s own cancer cells. The modified cells are then introduced back into the patient and will alert other immune system cells to attack the cancer.

An ongoing randomized study is in progress, based on the success of a smaller trial.
