Coloring used in some sodas poses cancer risk

Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Public health researchers looking at U.S. soda drinking habits warn that many people may be regularly exposing themselves to a potentially cancer-causing byproduct of the caramel coloring used in some types of soda.

A possible human carcinogen—4-methylimidazole (4-MEI)—is formed during the manufacture of some kinds of the caramel coloring used in in colas and other dark soft drinks. While there's currently no federal limit for 4-MEI in food or beverages, Consumer Reports petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to set limits for the potential carcinogen.

Urvashi Rangan, executive director for Consumer Reports' Food Safety and Sustainability Center comments that "this new analysis underscores our belief that people consume significant amounts of soda that unnecessarily elevate their risk of cancer over the course of a lifetime. We believe beverage makers and the government should take the steps needed to protect public health”.

Pepsi Plans to Drop Disputed Cancer Chemical

Pepsi Plans to Drop Disputed Cancer Chemical | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
Although the FDA has not declared 4-MEI dangerous, Pepsi says it will remove the chemical from cola sold nationwide by February 2014
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

Pepsi continues to sell sodas made with4-methylimidazole, or 4-MEI—ruled a carcinogen last year by the state of California—according to the Center For Environmental Health.

However Pepsi sold inside California had been reformulated to comply with state rules about the substance. Yet Pepsi drinks sold outside California continue to include higher amounts of 4-MEI, which helps give the cola drinks their caramel hue.

4-MEI is a compound formed during the production of some caramel coloring agents and is found in colas, beers, soy sauces, breads, and coffee.

Pepsi Sodas Found to Contain Carcinogenic Substances Above Allowable Limit

Pepsi Sodas Found to Contain Carcinogenic Substances Above Allowable Limit | Cancer - Advances, Knowledge, Integrative & Holistic Treatments | Scoop.it
A chemical found in many sodas may be dangerous to your health, Consumer Reports says. And no, it's not sugar (this time).
Graham Player Ph.D.'s insight:

The chemical 4-methylimidazole, or 4-MeI, found in many sodas is used to produce the golden-brown color and usually labeled as "caramel coloring”. According to the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer, and the state of California, the chemical may possibly cause cancer.

In California foods exceeding the limit of 29 micrograms of exposure to 4-MeI for the average consumer per day have to carry a warning label that reads: "WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer."

A lab analysis of sodas purchased in California found that one 12-ounce serving of Pepsi One or Malta Goya exceeded the levels permitted without having a warning label. It was further found that Pepsi One purchased by the group Consumer Reports in December in New York contains four times as much 4-MeI as the same product bought that same month in California.

In a statement to Consumer Reports, PepsiCo Inc. said data indicate that the average person consumes less than one-third a can of diet soda per day; therefore, its product meets the California standard, even if a complete serving exceeds that limit.
