Typewriter Terror

Typewriter Terror | News from the Canary Islands | Scoop.it

The phone rang; it was a colleague in Las Palmas telling me that the police were in the middle of a response to a potential terrorist incident in the city. A suspect package had been placed in front of the door to the garage of the central offices of the National Police on the island. The building was sealed off, traffic was prevented from entering the road, and anti-terrorist officers arrived to assess the potential danger of the package... continued on: http://barriemahoney.ie/blog/

The Canary Islander's insight:
As far as the original news story that started my week is concerned, I am still wondering why an antique typewriter was left outside the central police office. After all, does anyone use a typewriter nowadays?

Gran Canaria Forest Fire Out of Control | News from the Canary Islands | Scoop.it

The first major forest fire in the centre of Gran Canaria at Tejeda has been spreading very quickly due to the strong winds, and around 1000 hectares of land space are now affected by fire. The Korean Factor - 'Letters from the Atlantic'

It was a pleasant surprise this week to read that the Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is visiting South Korea to exchange ideas and experiences about policies on public transport, and a range of other issues. It makes a pleasant change to read positive news about South Korea, rather than depressing and unpleasant rhetoric, sabre rattling and threats between their neighbour, North Korea, and the United States...continued on: http://barriemahoney.com/letters/

The Canary Islander's insight:
The possibility of Canarian and South Korean Municipalities working together on a number of strategic projects has also been discussed, as well as investment from South Korea for projects in Gran Canaria. Cooperation and sharing of ideas between countries should always be welcomed.

The Canary Islander's insight:
At present, cigarette butts account for 30% of the total waste collected from the beaches in Las Palmas. If not collected or missed, then the toxic effects of cigarette butts take up to 10 years to degrade, and as the filters of cigarette butts are made of cellulose acetate, these tend to retain some of the toxic substances in cigarettes.

News from the Canary Islands | News from the Canary Islands | Scoop.it

Antonio Morales, President of the Gran Canaria Government has stirred the waters of discontent between the islands by claiming that 99% of Gran Canaria sewage is treated before pumping clean treated water into the sea, but also said that Tenerife Government departments responsible for sewage pump around 57 million litres of raw sewage into the sea around its coast...continued:

The Canary Islander's insight:
Of greater concern should be the response of some of the Tenerife hotel chains complaining that the media has unfairly dealt with this news, and is threatening the tourist industry. Surely holidaymakers and island residents have a right to know what is going on? Critics of the media would be far better focussing their anger upon the islands’ governments and pressurising them into rapidly addressing the problem. “Don’t shoot the messenger” seems to be appropriate here.
