Enough is Enough You Stupid Bastards! Toxic Waste Spill in Northern Alberta. Biggest of Recent Oil Spill Disasters in North America! | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it
Plants and trees have died in 42 hectares affected by the leak of ‘produced water’ from an oil and gas operation

The substance is the inky black colour of oil, and the treetops are brown. Across a broad expanse of northern Alberta muskeg, the landscape is dead. It has been poisoned by a huge spill of 9.5 MILLION litres of toxic waste from an oil and gas operation in northern Alberta, the third major leak in a region...

This was not an OOPS! oil spill. This is an intentional method of disposing of accumulated Waste. Basically, there is no other place to put this Waste other than into the environment. These companies don't have the technology or desire to dispose of this stuff safely. Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada and Alison Redford, Premier of Alberta endorse this stupidity! In fact, they have created legislation to protect these Oil Companies from criminal charges or fines - from their acts of wanton environmental destruction! This has got to STOP!

By the way, 9.5 Million litres of toxic waste pumped on to the land is not a F...ing LEAK!

Pardon me for my choice of descriptive language. Seriously ticked off today!

Kinder Morgan Resolute (or, Strangely Over Confident) on Trans Mountain Tar Sands Pipeline! Why? | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it
Company says plans for Trans Mountain expansion will proceed no matter outcome of B.C. election

The new $5.4-billion pipeline would increase total capacity to 890,000 barrels a day from the current 300,000 barrels a day.

“The proposed escalation will result in going from 80 tankers per year to 400 or more into Kinder Morgan’s Westridge Terminal in Burnaby

This will increase by Five times the tanker traffic in the Burrard Inlet. Increasing the advent of a major Tar Sands Spill to an guaranteed inevitability.  Remember the Alberta Tar Sands running at full capacity has a 40 to 50 year lifespan. That fact should help in determining the odds of not just one Tars Sands Oil Spill but the Odds of Ongoing persistent Spills.

And remember this stuff is impossible to clean up and, as well, Kinder Morgan would not be liable for any Clean up costs.

See this: TransMountain Pipeline Proposal leaves Taxpayers Liable for 90% of Spill Response Cost!

Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

Kinder Morgan Canada says it is plowing ahead with its Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion project from Edmonton to the West Coast, despite fresh opposition from the front-runner in British Columbia’s election campaign.

Kinder Morgan Canada president Ian Anderson said Tuesday that the pipeline company is on track to file its application to the National Energy Board by late 2013.

And so, here's the deal British Columbia!

The Harper Government will use the National Energy Board (NEB) to rubber stamp the project effectively bypassing the Governmnet of British Columbia. Bypassing the citizens of British Columbia!

Keystone XL: The Pipeline to Disaster!

Keystone XL: The Pipeline to Disaster! | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it

In March, the State Department gave the president cover to open a big spigot that will hitch (USA) our country to one of the dirtiest fuels on Earth for 40 years or more.

According to law, the administration's final decision will be based on whether the pipeline is in the "national interest."

While the world will be stuck with the climate damages, the U.S. will be on the hook for spills, environmental degradation and much more. Not only is it a bad marriage but a long one: TransCanada's estimated annual depreciation rate for "oil pipeline and pumping equipment" is 2% to 2.5%, which means a pipeline with a useful life of 40 to 50 years.

Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

The science on climate change has been in for a quarter of a century. There are no more mixed messages, just catastrophe after catastrophe. The president stands at a fork in the road: Rejecting the pipeline will show the world we are serious and determined to be on the right side of history. Approving it will signal we are too entrenched with business-as-usual to do what's right by the people, planet and future generations.

All of President Obama's achievements will fade if he doesn't act swiftly and decisively on climate change. Rejecting Keystone is the first step.

Believing in clean oilsands like believing in ‘magic fairies,’ top scientist says | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it

Claims that Alberta’s Tar Sands are environmentally harmless are “lies” and won’t convince anyone in Washington, one of Canada’s most famous ecologists said Friday.

Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

Here's a sample from the story:

Political leaders in Alberta and Ottawa “seem to think that Americans believe in magic fairies — just shut your eyes and say the Tar Sands are clean four times and it happens,” said David Schindler of the University of Alberta.

“It gives you an indication of how stupid this must seem to people in Washington. They must think we’ve all just fallen off a turnip truck ... We’ve had premiers and prime ministers and ministers of the environment spouting this stuff.”

The Back of Beyond

The Back of Beyond | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Alberta Premier Alison Redford, and Kinder Morgan Think Screwing the Province of British Columbia is - OK!

A Tar Sands Tanker Oil Spill will cost British Columbia taxpayers billions. A major spill could cost $10 billion or more, but insurance would only cover a tenth of that, leaving the rest of the cost...

Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

To bring back the ocean and connecting water ways to their original pristine condition (after a Tanker Catastrophe) is impossible no matter how much money is spent. The heavy bitumen sludge left behind sinks to the bottom of the water body making it impossible to properly clean up.

Suncor Energy Dumps Waste Water into Athabasca River! Ft. Chip under Attack.

Suncor Energy Dumps Waste Water into Athabasca River! Ft. Chip under Attack. | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - Waste water that spilled at an oilsands plant in northern Alberta has been released into a nearby river.
Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

"It is water that has been used in our extraction and upgrading process and has not yet been treated," she said.

But, .. the company isn't too concerned it will affect the environment.

Chief Allan Adam of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation is also closely monitoring the leak.

Suncor initially said it didn't know if any waste water had spilled into the river and didn't confirm the news until late Tuesday. But the chief of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation said company officials earlier informed the reserve that it had.

"It got into the river, guaranteed," said Allan Adam.

He expects it will take about six days for any spilled fluid to flow north and reach the community. The reserve sits on the shore of Lake Athabasca, where residents get their drinking water.

One of the biggest issues following events like this is accountability, he said.

“With the poor monitoring, poor regulations and the poor [environmental] enhancement act in place, we’ll continue to see ruptures like this take place. Nobody will be held accountable for it — but the fact remains that this is an ongoing issue.”

Another Tar Sands Pipeline - Bigger than Keystone XL and Headed for the Great Lakes! | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it

... notice of another major proposed Presidential Pipeline permit action, along with a draft Environmental Impact Statement. Enbridge is proposing to increase the transport capacity of its formerly named "Alberta Clipper" pipeline extending from Hardesty, Alberta to Superior, Wisconsin.

Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

The proposed Presidential Permit would authorize modifications to the facility allowing an eventual transport rate of 880,000 barrels per day ---- larger than the 830,000 barrels per day for the Keystone XL Pipeline.

What can go wrong? It's Enbridge!

Remember, at hearings in the Canadian Province of British Columbia, Enbridge told regulators, decision makers, and the public that Tar Sands Oil (DilBit) floats on water. Well, that's just not true!

Tar Sands: The True Price of Petroleum - A True Killing Machine!

Tar Sands: The True Price of Petroleum - A True Killing Machine! | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it

The Alberta Tar Sands have led Canada to abandon its role as a voice for global environmental sustainability. The country is very quickly going from being a respected moral and ecological voice on the world stage to being generally seen as an obstacle to progress on global warming.

Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

Syncrude alone – just one of many operations in the Tar Sands – dumps 500,000 tons of toxic tailings into just one of their tailings ponds everyday. Enough toxic sludge is produced each day to fill 720 Olympic-sized pools. Toxins leak into the Athabasca River from Suncor’s now “reclaimed” Tar Island pond at a rate of one million gallons per day – the equivalent of about two Olympic-sized pools. Approximately 20 of these toxic lakes lie on either side of the Athabasca River.

Several scientific studies now indicate that a cocktail of deadly carcinogenic toxins from leaking ponds, watershed destruction and air pollution are finding their way into the river and food chain of downstream indigenous communities like Fort Chipewyan. In Fort Chipewyan, rare cancers previously unknown in the community are now appearing with alarming frequency. For example, bile duct cancer, which usually appears once per 100,000 individuals, has appeared in three separate cases in the past few years within a community of just twelve hundred.

EurActiv: Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres drops out of research into tar sands impact over fears of reputational impact
Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

As many as 20 scientists at the world-famous Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres have ceased involvement in the Helmholtz Alberta Initiative (HAI), after a moratorium on contacts was declared last month.

“It was seen as a risk for our reputation,” Professor Frank Messner, Helmholtz UFZ’s head of staff said over the phone from his offices in Leipzig.

“As an environmental research centre we have an independent role as an honest broker and doing research in this constellation could have had reputational problems for us, especially after Canada’s withdrawal from the Kyoto Protocol,” he said.

Canada says EU passing 'Fuel Quality Directive' is a type of economic blackmail and persecution. Canada has threatened to launch a suit against the EU at the World Trade Organisation if it proceeds with the 'Fuel Quality Directive' as planned, and has raised the issue in the context of a planned $20 billion EU-Canada Free Trade Agreement. Funny, dosen't that sound a lot like Blackmail?

Within Canada though, it is often climate scientists that say they are ones being persecuted.

The Other Oil Disaster: Cancer and Canada's Tar Sands! A Government Cover-Up!

The Other Oil Disaster: Cancer and Canada's Tar Sands! A Government Cover-Up! | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it

Today I was privileged to be an invited guest of the community of Fort Chipewyan, Canada. I can't blame you if you've never heard of Ft. Chip ...

Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

... it wasn't just the elevated cancer rates that got my attention, however. It was also the types of cancers seen. Leukemias and lymphomas have been linked in the scientific literature to petroleum products, including VOCs (volatile components of petroleum), dioxin-like chemicals, and other hydrocarbons. Biliary cancers have been linked to petroleum and to PAHs (chemicals in tar and soot). Soft tissue sarcomas are very rare and lethal cancers that have also been linked to dioxin-like chemicals and hydrocarbons. It's an interesting pattern -- almost all of the cancer types that were elevated have been linked scientifically to chemicals in oil or tar.

... as I flew back to Edmonton on the tiny plane, I looked down on miles of pristine boreal forest dotted with lakes and entwined by rivers. Then the tar sands operations came into view - vast scars on the land, massive sulfur piles, smokestacks creating huge plumes into the sky, and enormous tailings ponds next to the river glimmering with an oily sheen; tailings ponds that are almost certainly leaching contaminants into the Athabasca River, which carries them down toward Ft. Chip.

TransCanada Pipelines Refuses to Use Modern Technology and Infrared Sensors to Detect Leaks In Keystone XL Pipeline! Says Old Technology Adequate. Read on ... | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it

TransCanada Corp., which says Keystone XL will be the safest pipeline ever built, isn’t planning to use infrared sensors or fiber-optic cables to detect spills along the system’s 2,000-mile (3,200-kilometer) path to Texas refineries from fields in Alberta, Canada.

Keystone XL would have to be spilling more than 12,000 barrels a day -- or 1.5 percent of its 830,000 barrel capacity - - before its currently planned internal spill-detection systems would trigger an alarm, according to the U.S. State Department, which is reviewing the proposal.

“You’re talking about a system that isn’t going to be able to detect a leak that’s greater than half a million gallons a day,” said Anthony Swift, a lawyer at the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental advocacy group in Washington.

Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

Potential Keystone Pipeline Leaks Underestimated, Study Finds.

A study released Monday suggests that the worst-case spill scenarios contemplated by TransCanada, the company behind a proposed 2,000-mile pipeline linking oil deposits in Canada to the American Gulf Coast, are grossly underestimated -- and that hundreds of rivers, streams and aquifers are vulnerable to toxic oil contamination.

... analysis also suggests that TransCanada tweaked its spill factor calculations to produce an estimate of one major spill on the 1,673 miles of pipeline about every five years. But an examination of government data on spill rates for similar pipelines  suggests that Keystone would experience "a more likely average of almost two major spills per year."

Note: In just one year of operation, the existing leg of the pipeline has had one significant spill and 11 smaller spills.

Keystone XL would cross nearly 2,000 rivers in six states. See:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/11/keystone-pipeline-leak_n_894526.html

Current Pipeline leak detection systems miss 19 out of 20 spills

Not only do pipeline leak detection systems miss nineteen out of twenty spills, they miss four out of five spills larger than 42,000 gallons.

Understanding the limits of current leak detection technology has never been more important. As companies like Enbridge and TransCanada propose pipelines moving large volumes of tar sands across sparely populated areas, through rivers and aquifers, it’s critical that the public consider what’s at stake with open eyes. Particularly after learning from Enbridge’s Kalamazoo tar sands pipeline spill how much more damaging tar sands can be.See:

http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/aswift/pipeline_leak_detection_system.html

Enbridge Pipelines are playing the same misinformation game as TransCanada Corp.

(For the Proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline) According to Enbridge, 'Pipeline Spills' are only expected to occur 25 times over a 50-year span. The new independent studies predicts 776 pipeline spills over the same period - 31 times more frequent than the Enbridge's 'guess'.See:

Enbridge Northern Gateway 'Tanker Spills' Predicted at One Every 10 Years, Not One Every 250 Years As Company Claims! Enbridge having Trouble Telling the Truth Again. 'Say Anything, Do Anything' - ... | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it

According to a new study to be released... the risks associated with the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline are significantly higher than presented by the company in its project reporting.

According to Enbridge, 'Pipeline Spills' are only expected to occur 25 times over a 50-year span. The new analysis predicts 776 pipeline spills over the same period - 31 times more frequent than the Enbridge's 'guess'.

I 'quess' the Point is still - one spill is one too many. WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT HERE? On one hand Enbridge promises NO spills and the pipeline is Safe, and on the other hand predicts an erroneous number of Spills.

B.C. don't let your guard down with these guys!

Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

The Polaris Institute found that Enbridge was responsible for more than 800 spills between 1999 and 2010, with a total of more than 6.8 million gallons of oil released.

That's not including Enbridge's disastrous 2010 pipeline rupture in Michigan that released more than 1 million gallons of tar sands diluted bitumen into a tributary of the Kalamazoo River, creating the most expensive onshore oil cleanup in the petroleum industry's history. The price tag for that ongoing cleanup is currently estimated at a whopping $1 billion.

Last fall during a public hearing in Prince George, BC, Enbridge was unable to provide evidence for what the company claims will be its 'world-class' spill prevention and response program for the Northern Gateway. When pressed for details, company officials admitted they will have no land-based spill-prevention plan until six months before the proposed pipeline would be in operation.

Standing in a pipe yard in Cushing, Oklahoma, the President declared:

“And today, I’m directing my administration to cut through the red tape, break through the bureaucratic hurdles, and make this project a priority, to go ahead and get it done.”

The Baltimore Sun  http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/editorial/bs-ed-keystone-20130403,0,594530.story

... images of Arkansas waterfowl covered in thick crude may not pull at the heartstrings of pro-Keystone members of Congress, but the practical implications of enabling Canada to sell its oil to other countries and worsening climate change ought to get everyone's attention. These outcomes would be hugely expensive and harmful to national security. Canada might find an alternative to the Keystone even if it means sending it out by truck or train, but there's little reason why the U.S. needs to directly enable this folly.

The Baltimore Sun http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/readersrespond/bs-ed-keystone-letter-20130311,0,868132.story

... the benefits accrued to the United States would be modest. Indeed, some experts see the pipeline as a net loser for the U.S. economy because it's likely to drive gasoline prices higher. If the 1,660-mile pipeline is built, the oil will be more readily available for export, and prices will inevitably climb to match the global benchmark. That's no small difference. Canadian producers stand to pocket between $2 billion and $4 billion more — money that could come straight out of U.S. motorists' pockets.

The town of Mirabel got $10,000, and put it toward the cost of a generator for its fire department. Belleville, Ont., got $25,000 to turn a city bus into a mobile emergency command centre.

Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

Remember Ontario and Quebec that - Enbridge says cost of cleaning up Kalamazoo River Tar Sands Oil Spill is nearing one Billion $$$$!

Problem is that in Canada Enbridge is only liable for only a tiny fraction of any Oil Spill clean-up cost.

See this Eastern Canada: From the 'The Tyee' - Enbridge Not Positioned to Pay for Gateway Oil Spill!

So the choice is a $10,000 generator or the polluting and Bankrupting of your Community or Province?

Those folks on the Saint Lawrence River and Atlantic Seaboard must remember that the economic realities of an Tar Sands Oil Spill Disaster will be the same for them as they are for people living on the West Coast.  Oil companies, tankers, and pipelines will not cover the costs of a Tar Sands Oil Spill clean-up. It could serve as an alternative to Northern Gateway, the controversial West Coast export pipeline project from TransCanada competitor Enbridge Inc. that has faced a wall of opposition from first nations and environmental groups.

The TransCanada proposal would send 625,000 barrels a day across the country to Montreal, Quebec City and potentially Saint John, N.B..

See the route.  More information as well.  http://glurl.co/br5

Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

So Eastern Canada is this something you really want? Oil soaked neighborhoods, Tar Sands Oil resting forever a the bottom of your rivers, lakes, and streams.

Or, how about Tar Sands Oil loaded onto monster Oil Tankers on the St. Lawrence River (God help us) and/or Tar Sands Oil transhipped to American refiners via reverse Pipeline through Montreal and onward to Portland, Maine.

Think of Mayflower, Arkansas. Think of Kalamazoo River where the clean-up has taken over two years and it is feared The Kalamazoo will never ever be the pristine river it was. Or, think about Dilbit resting on the bottom of the St. Lawrence River.

These Reverse Pipelines were designed for Natural Gas Transmission and are over 50 years old. What can go Wrong? I mean really, what can go wrong?

The Kalamazoo - Enbridge Resisting Final Clean-Up of Its Michigan Oil Spill!

The Kalamazoo - Enbridge Resisting Final Clean-Up of Its Michigan Oil Spill! | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it
Two and a half years after the costliest oil pipeline spill in U.S. history, the company responsible for the disaster is balking at digging up oil that still remains in Michigan's Kalamazoo River.
Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

The cleanup has been long and difficult because the ruptured pipeline was carrying bitumen, a heavy oil from Canada's Tar Sands region. Bitumen is so thick that it can't flow through pipelines until it's mixed with liquid chemicals to form diluted bitumen, or dilbit. When more than one million gallons of dilbit poured out of the broken pipeline in July 2010, the chemicals evaporated and the bitumen began sinking to the riverbed.

In October, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency asked Enbridge Inc., the pipeline's Canadian owner, to clean up several miles of the river where submerged oil is still accumulating. The proposed order told Enbridge to dredge 80 to 100 acres of the riverbed.

.. the latest survey show that oil is pooling near Ceresco Dam, Mill Ponds and Morrow Lake Delta. Oil is also showing up in places that were once oil-free, and the EPA is concerned it could move further downstream during floods. .. dredging is therefore an imperative.

Enbridge disputes these conclusions.

The Kalamazoo - The Spill from Hell: Diluted Bitumen (DilBit)

The Kalamazoo - The Spill from Hell: Diluted Bitumen (DilBit) | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it

Poisoned air. Sunken gunk. A clean-up nightmare. What we're learning from the oil sands 'DilBit' dump into the Kalamazoo River.

The cleanup challenges and health impacts around Kalamazoo were unlike anything the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had ever dealt with ...

Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

This was no ordinary crude -- it was the first ever major spill into water of diluted bitumen from the Alberta Tar Sands.

... as the lighter chemicals evaporated into the surrounding area, the bitumen portion began to sink to the bottom and become mixed with river sediments. Conventional clean-up equipment such as skimmers and oil booms proved useless in recovering the large amounts of submerged oil that now covers an area of river bottom estimated to be approximately 200 acres.

To date, the EPA reports recovering 1,146,803 gallons of oil -- 35 per cent more than the volume Enbridge reported was spilled. As we have witnessed, Enbridge always has trouble telling the truth!

In a recent hearing (in British Columbia, Canada) to determine the fate of the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline project, Enbridge told regulators, decision makers and the public that Tar Sands Oil floats in water.

This is not a little white lie: the fact that tar sands oil sinks in water is one of the biggest problems facing the industry and pipeline operators, proving that any spill of any kind into water is devastating, toxic and impossible to clean-up. The hundreds of acres of submerged oil in the Kalamazoo River — that Enbridge can’t clean up — is case and point!

US regulator fines Kinder Morgan for breaking 27 safety rules!

US regulator fines Kinder Morgan for breaking 27 safety rules! | Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper | Scoop.it

The U.S. federal Department of Transportation has fined Kinder Morgan nearly a million dollars in civil fines for breaking 27 U.S. pipeline safety rules.

In 2012 PHMSA fined Enbridge, a Calgary-based firm, a record $3.7 million for a total of 24 violations of pipeline regulations related to largest onshore oil spill in U.S. history in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The spill of diluted bitumen cost nearly $1 billion to clean up and the river remains contaminated.

Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

National Energy Board, Canada's federal pipeline regulator, performs two conflicting roles: it approves new pipelines and regulates existing ones.

Since 2008, the board says it has issued 24 safety orders against pipelines owned by Enbridge, TransCanada and Kinder Morgan for a variety of infractions. None of the companies were fined ... . None were sanctioned in any way.

So we should trust these pipeline guys with our land, water, air, and Coastal waters?

So we should trust the Canadian Government and the NEB to ensure the pipeline guys don't pollute Canada's land, air, water, and Coastal waters?

Mother who left her Peace River region home behind could 'smell the bitumen.'
Lusk Creek Rider's insight:

"The next morning when going out to wait for the school bus, the air smelled moderately of bitumen emissions and my son's eye was twitching so severely that he had a tantrum.

"The baby's wound kept getting worse and I know Baytex was not at full production capacity yet. I made the decision to remove my kids."

"I could not allow my children, my husband, or myself to live in an environment full of poisonous gases that Baytex Energy and the Alberta government claim to be 'within regulation' ...

Whenever rural citizens and First Nations raise concerns about effects of rapid development on human health, groundwater and livestock, they say that they are often bullied, marginalized and ignored.

... many Tory politicians believe that (Alberta) citizens no longer have the right to question the pace and scale of Oil Sands development.
