On April 3, the New York Times reported that LinkedIn is one of many competitors vying for a piece of Google’s search traffic. With over 5.7 billion professionally oriented searches performed on the site last year, LinkedIn has made continued efforts to improve the search experience, adding new features like auto-complete, suggested searches, automated alerts and a smarter query intent algorithm.
Content marketing on LinkedIn puts you and your business in front of the people you want to see it. Just like with Google, there is a renewed focus on content at LinkedIn as the company strives to compete with other social networks.A great example of this is LinkedIn’s recent acquisition and integration of SlideShare, a service used for uploading and sharing presentations.
Add to this the launch of new products like LinkedIn Today, LinkedIn Influencers (where a hand-picked crew of 200 celebrity professionals present exclusive content), and Sponsored Updates (allowing brands to promote whitepapers and branded content), and marketers have a powerful platform that combines search and social and connects content with influencers.
New figures released yesterday from the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) show a concerted effort is still underway to clean up the growing amount of bitumen emulsion – a mixture of tar sands oil and water – that is pooling in a forested area surrounding Canada Natural Resource Ltd.’s Cold Lake project.
The cause of the seepage, which shows no sign of subsiding, has yet to be determined.
AER’s updated volumes show that the total amount of bitumen emulsion recovered on four separate spill sites amounts to 1444.4 cubic metres, a volume equivalent to 1.4 million litres of oil.
SPOKANE, Washington, Sep 01 (IPS) - Native American tribes in the United States have taken the lead in opposing the expansion of the Athabasca Tar Sands in Alberta, Canada, engaging in civil disobedience to the point of arrest and attempting to physically block shipments of construction equipment from passing through their native lands.
Native opposition is based on concern over the environmental destruction associated with the expansion and with the related Keystone XL Pipeline. The pipeline would convey oil from the tar sands through Canada and the United States to southeastern Texas.
As previously reported by IPS, the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation says the expansion of the world's third largest crude oil deposit so far has caused significant damage to the ecosystem, including the disappearance of bugs, decline in the numbers of migratory birds, elevated rates of certain types of cancers, and the possible extinction of caribou herds. The Nez Perce tribe are also concerned about the Megaload shipments coming through their tribal lands, without their permission, and the ecological damage these shipments might cause. The most recent, a Megaload shipment, contains a 322-tonne, 225-foot-long evaporator to be used in the oil refining process in connection with the Tar Sands expansion.
"What it really amounts to is our association [with] our surroundings, our environment," Tony Smith, a member of the Nez Perce tribe, told IPS in an interview at the recent Spokane Falls Northwest Indian Market, Encampment and Pow Wow.

"The government didn't tell anybody in Canada about FIPA...everyone's constitutional rights were violated," Hupacasath First Nation councillor Brenda Sayers told the Vancouver Observer. "And it does does impact First Nations who are along the Enbridge (Northern Gateway) pipeline route, which Chinese companies have invested in."
Sayers responded to the court's decision to dismiss the Hupacasath Nation's court case against the Canada-China foreign investment promotion and protection treaty. The court ruled that the Hupacasath First Nation did not adequately show how the ratification of FIPA would infringe upon Aboriginal rights. It also said FIPA would not result in a violation of the Constitution, which requires Canada to consult with First Nations on projects affecting their land.
The 300 person band had filed affidavits against FIPA in February this year, alleging that the government's 31-year-trade deal with China -- signed in Vladivostok, Russia last September -- would drastically increase the extraction of natural fuels from Canadian soil and infringe on Aboriginal rights. The Hupacasaths' challenge of FIPA gained the support of numerous advocacy groups, including Leadnow and the Green Party. Last October, Leadnow and SumofUs presented an anti-FIPA petition with 60,000 signatures to Ottawa.

A prominent First Nation leader who had been working on the case called the court's decision "absurd, unconscionable and incredibly offensive."

Make no mistake–teaching has never been easy. But as we come upon 2014, as a profession teaching is increasingly characterized by its possibility, accountability, and persistent mutation. Which makes it a challenge to do at all, much do well.
The response to these challenges is a mix of building-level professional development, self-directed teacher improvement, and a troubling amount of teacher burnout. So how can you teacher smarter rather than simply grunting harder?"
"Blended Learning is not so much an innovation as it is a natural by-product of the digital domain creeping into physical boundaries. As digital and social media become more and more prevalent in the life of learners, it was only a matter of time before learning became “blended” by necessity.
That said, there’s a bit more to Blended and “Hybrid” Learning than throwing in a little digital learning." Terry Heick
Don't like the trade deficit, low GDP and the public outrage over the offshore outsourcing? Change the accounting method to make it go away! Such is the agenda of government statisticians it appears. How they are going to incorporate statistical lies into national accounts is shocking. Production location no longer matters, the thing that will count is ownership of the final product.
