Your Kids Will Have A Better Life If You Move To Canada

Your Kids Will Have A Better Life If You Move To Canada | Canada's Technology Triangle Inc. | Scoop.it

Worried your kids will have a bleak future if they live in America?

Maybe it's time to leave.HSBC's fifth annual Expat Survey identified Canada as the best place for expats to raise kids.

Canada was the cheapest place to raise a kid, and it ranked in the top four for safety, education, and childcare.

Kids in Canada play more sports than anywhere else, and rank near the top in time spent with parents, and lack of time in front of the TV.

A full 97 percent of expat parents in Canada said their kids were enjoying living there.

HSBC said, "Canada proved a popular choice among expat parents with one fifth (20 percent) of expat parents living in the country suggesting that of all of the expat locations, they would choose to relocate elsewhere within the country rather than choose a new location or move back to their home country."

Canada’s Economy on a Growth Track | Area Development Online

Canada’s Economy on a Growth Track | Area Development Online | Canada's Technology Triangle Inc. | Scoop.it
Traditional and innovative industries are driving economic growth across Canada.

Canada continues to show the world why the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) ranked it the best country in the G-7 in which to do business over the next five years. According to the Royal Bank of Canada’s (RBC) economic forecasting division, Canada’s GDP will record a 2.6 percent gain in 2012 and 2013 — down slightly from the higher 3.1 percent growth rate earlier in the year (due largely to European debt issues, which also slowed the growth of emerging markets). Even so, Canada was ranked as the best country in the world for business in Forbes’ October 2011 study of 134 countries. Also, for the fourth straight year, the World Economic Forum rated Canada’s banking system as the world’s most stable.

Canada has posted the fastest employment growth in the G-7 over the last two years, recovering all the jobs that were lost during the recession. The RBC expects that job growth will continue at a steady pace over the next two years, dropping the unemployment rate to 6.9 percent by the end of 2013.

Economists and investors are optimistic about Canada’s strong fundamentals: “We’re relatively bullish,” says Craig Wright, RBC’s chief economist. “Overall, conditions for growth are positive, supported by a continuation of a low interest rate environment and a Canadian financial sector that is healthy and ready to provide credit.”

One of Canada’s greatest strengths is the diversity of its key economic regions. Each one has its core resource-based industries that are still vitally important to its economic performance, as well as robust clusters of innovation-based industries like aerospace, information and communications technology (ICT), life sciences, alternative energy, electronics, and advanced manufacturing that continue to expand and provide high-paying jobs.

Canada among the top in the world for tax competitiveness | KPMG | CA | Canada's Technology Triangle Inc. | Scoop.it

Canada is the second most competitive country among 14 major global economies for corporate taxes after  India, and took the top spot among mature markets, according to KPMG’s Competitive Alternatives 2012: Focus on Tax( Focus on Tax) study.

Here at home, Canadian cities, Vancouver (2nd), Toronto (5th) and Montréal (6th) ranked in the top 10 among 55 major international cities studied. The global KPMG study assesses the general tax competitiveness of 55 major international cities in 14 countries, and for the first time, the 2012 study features four major high growth countries – Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC).

“The study provides an effective approach for international comparisons based on the tax results of different business scenarios,” said Elio Luongo, Canadian Managing Partner, Tax, KPMG in Canada. “Canada continues to offer a very competitive tax structure, which is crucial to attracting inbound investment, spurring innovation, and creating skilled jobs that support our families and communities in Canada.”

Focus on Tax is a supplement to KPMG’s 2012 Competitive Alternatives(March 2012), a global study comparing total business costs across 14 countries. Focus on Tax compares the total tax burden faced by companies in each country and city, including: corporate income taxes, capital taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, miscellaneous local business taxes, and statutory labour costs, resulting in a Total Tax Index (TTI) for each location based on 19 different business operations in four sectors described below.

RIM Founder Invests $100 Million to Create Canada's Ultimate Hive of Technological Innovation

RIM Founder Invests $100 Million to Create Canada's Ultimate Hive of Technological Innovation | Canada's Technology Triangle Inc. | Scoop.it

Mike Lazaridis, who founded Research In Motion in Waterloo and pioneered the BlackBerry, poured $100 million into what will open  tomorrow as the Mike and Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre.

Located in Waterloo, this centre has high hopes of recreating the conditions that made AT&T's Bell Labs a famous epicentre of incredible technological innovation half a century ago. Bell Labs is often credited as a significant early contributor to what eventually became Silicon Valley.

The research centre is designed to produce breakthroughs in technology, particularly technology involving things nearly as small as an atom. It’s “absolutely” going to be the Bell Labs of the 21st century, Lazaridis affirmed yesterday in an interview with Bloomberg. “That reality got clearer and clearer to me as we got closer to the ribbon-cutting.”

Mike resigned as chairman of RIM at the start of this year. The company was doing poorly then and worse now, leaving an unfortunate black stain on an otherwise bright legacy. But RIM's shortcomings have freed up Mike's time quite a bit, which could prove better for Canadian innovation long-term.

“We can’t offer them ocean, beaches or mountains, but we can try and offer them the best environment, the best collaborators, the best equipment that would be conducive to them making the breakthroughs of their lifetime,” Mike said of the bright minds who will flock to his centre. “One of the best ways to describe this is we’re trying to break the known laws of physics.”

Annual ranking shows Canada more attractive to investment, outpacing U.S. | Canada's Technology Triangle Inc. | Scoop.it

As a result of business tax reform since 2005, Canada has become the most tax-competitive jurisdiction in the G-7 according to a report released today by The School of Public Policy.

In their 3rd Annual Global Tax Competitiveness Ranking, authors Jack Mintzand Duanjie Chen contrast the business tax regimes of 90 countries worldwide in terms of their impact on growth.

"Thanks to recent reductions to the corporate tax rate, Canada now has the most competitive tax system for business among the G-7, the 20th most competitive in the OECD and it ranks 57th among the countries we surveyed," Mintz said today. "The result has been greater investment and improved economic growth despite recessionary pressures."

Built for Bigger...Waterloo’s airport is poised on the threshold of major growth.

The airport, located in Canada’s “technology triangle,” serves residents in the neighbouring cities of Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo. In 2011, CYKF was ranked by Statistics Canada as the country’s 18th busiest airport, with a grand total of 96,907 aircraft movements during the year. Between 2005 and 2010, the airport saw a 469 per cent increase in overall passenger traffic. About 250 people work at the airfield’s 50 aviation-related businesses, ranging from the oldest, the Waterloo-Wellington Flight Centre (WWFC), to the newest, Millard Air.

Commercial activity represents a growing percentage of airport traffic. Today, the Region of Waterloo International Airport is home to WestJet, with non-stop daily service to Calgary; Bearskin, which flies to Ottawa and Montreal; Sunwing, which heads south to Punta Cana during the winter travel season; and American Eagle (American), which commenced its new Chicago service in mid-June.

Waterloo, Ontario, Morphs Into Tech Start-Up Magnet

WATERLOO, Ontario—Philipe Noelting graduated from Babson College in 2009 with an idea for a job-recruitment start-up.

But instead of staying put in Boston or moving to other start-up hubs like Silicon Valley or New York, Mr. Noelting ended up here—a small university town 90 minutes northwest of Toronto.

Waterloo may be best known as the hometown of BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion Ltd., recently struggling amid competition from Apple Inc. and Google Inc.

But unlike other company towns with swooning corporate titans, Waterloo is thriving, quietly morphing into a magnet for technology start-ups, incubators, accelerators and young inventors.

CambridgeTimes Article: LaserJobs creates precise niche for growing business

CambridgeTimes Article: LaserJobs creates precise niche for growing business | Canada's Technology Triangle Inc. | Scoop.it

These days, big innovation means getting smaller. And that can be a good thing for some businesses.

The German-based company specializes in the production of precision-cut stainless steel SMD (surface mount device) stencils and opened in Cambridge last November. It serves some of the area’s most recognizable companies with its cutting edge technology, literally.

One of those customers is Research in Motion. Inside any Blackberry and most other computerized gadgets are PCBs (printed circuit boards) with an array of electronic components and conductive pathways. The stencils manufactured by LaserJob are essentially used for getting solder paste onto PCB boards, so that the various components can be mounted on top.

Kleemann said Waterloo Region is an innovative area for an innovative company which was initially attracted here with its proximity to some of its largest customers. However, LaserJob quickly discovered the innovative and advanced manufacturing business community.

Clinching their decision came after an extensive evaluation of the region’s transportation and logistics services.

Canada’s Technology Triangle (CTT), along with its municipal, federal and community partners, worked closely to ensure LaserJob’s arrival was as smooth as possible by offering assistance with such things as incorporation and site selection.

CTT is a regional economic development partnership that markets the competitive advantages of Waterloo Region to the world.
