When it was time to consider a more modern, expanded manufacturing facility, Shimco owner Peter Voss looked at keeping the company in Markham. 


But he ultimately chose to move to Cambridge.

Canada's Technology Triangle Inc.'s insight:

Since taking over the firm four years ago, Voss said he's positioned Shimco to focus solely on the aerospace industry, jettisoning about 40 per cent of its previous business in the process.

At the same time, he said the company has doubled in size during his tenure.

"My goal is to double the company every two years," he said.

Aeryon has no shortage of rivals in the global commercial drone market, whose sales will hit $1.27-billion (U.S.) by 2020, according to Dublin-based research firm Research and Markets. But being located in Canada works in its favour.

First, thanks to this country’s relaxed drone laws, Aeryon has enjoyed access to airspace long denied its counterparts in the United States, where the Federal Aviation Administration only began allowing commercial use in the past year. “We’ve been able to have customers flying and we’ve been able to fly and test our systems in the air, as opposed to many potential competitors that could have started in the U.S. but simply couldn’t even fly to test their own systems,” Mr. Kroetsch says.

Sobeys, Sun Life Financial and Regus Group are the latest to sign leases for the Waterloo Corporate Campus development at Northfield Drive and Weber Street North, said Mark Kindrachuck, president of Intermarket Real Estate Group


The Waterloo Corporate Campus, one of the largest redevelopments of a former industrial site in Waterloo Region, is a hive of construction activity. The $150-million project calls for up to 18 new buildings, including a 57,000-square-foot data centre.

The data centre will be the single most expensive building in the development with an estimated cost of $50 million. It will have two independent power supplies, backup generators, two sources of high-capacity fibre optics, emergency lighting and a powerful ventilation and cooling system.

It was the age of exuberance, not all of it irrational.

By a conservative count, at least 25 companies in Waterloo Region can trace their roots to PixStream. Companies such as Sandvine, Auvik Networks, Pixus Technologies, Aterica Digital Health, Avvasi, Aeryon Labs, Tech Capital Partners and others formed from PixStream talent.


Those companies in turn fostered talented entrepreneurs who formed yet other companies. For example, one of the founders of Miovision previously worked at Sandvine. Local startups such as Reebee and Bonfire Interactive have founders who were involved in Miovision, as do Toronto-based companies Top Hat and Roadmunk.

Sleepless nights and cans of Red Bull helped a team of engineers from the University of Waterloo win a competition to design a hybrid race car.

Waterloo beat out teams from top engineering universities across North America, Turkey and India to take first place overall at the Formula Hybrid competition held from April 27 to 30. The team also set a record for endurance - 33 laps around the track.

Chartright Air Group is Canada’s largest provider of corporate jet charter and Toronto’s largest operator of corporate jets. As a licensed charter airline operator Chartright manages a fleet of 37 corporate aircraft which fly to destinations around the world. Chartright currently employs 140 people at six locations across Canada and is expected to employ over 40 people when they are fully operational in Waterloo Region.

Out with the old tech, in with the new. In April, construction crews began stripping down an old laboratory tucked among the engineering buildings on the University of Waterloo campus. They are creating a research facility with three different labs, or cells, working toward a common objective: smarter, more energy-efficient automobiles, with reduced emissions.

Funding for the $10-million Green and Intelligent Automotive (GAIA) research facility started with an initial $1-million contribution from Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC), along with federal and provincial government support of $2.1 million each, from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Ontario Research Fund Research Infrastructure programs.

In first place, Medella Health won $10,000 for its pitch by co-founder Harry Gandhi. Medella Health is developing a smart contact lens that monitors glucose levels, and transmits the data in real-time to a mobile phone, so patients can better manage their diabetes.


In second, winning $5,000, was EyeCheck, which is making vision screening fast and mobile, in order to eradicate preventable blindness around the world. QidniLabs, which is working on creating an artificial kidney, won $2,000 for third place.
