Grand River Hospital and the University of Waterloo announced a “milestone” research partnership on Friday. 


The partnership will allow academics and clinicians to collaborate on research to improve patient care, the Kitchener hospital said. It will also enrich UW research.

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) announced more than $15 million in funding to support research at the University of Waterloo today.

Besides robotic cells and special purpose machines, TriTed specializes in ultrasonic welding, which involves welding plastic onto plastic. Welding plastic parts onto a plastic bumper is an example. Ultrasonic welding is becoming popular, "and we have many other applications coming for that," Miro Pantic says.

The American Cancer Society has given a researcher from the University of Waterloo the award considered the top in the world for tobacco control. Professor Geoffrey Fong received one of the American Cancer Society’s Luther R. Terry Awards for Outstanding Research Contribution.

The ITC Project conducts surveys of thousands of people to assess the impact of tobacco control policies in each participating country. The research examines the effectiveness of strategies such as warning labels, pricing and taxation, smoke-free laws and education. These are policies listed in the world’s first health treaty, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which has been ratified by 180 countries, including Canada.

Sword clashes have been around for centuries. And as combat sports go, fencing surely is one of the classics, requiring athleticism and intellect in equal measures.

Fencing is one of five pursuits included in every modern Summer Olympic Games, along with track and field, swimming, gymnastics and cycling.

And for the first time, local audiences can witness the sport conducted up close in one of this country's biggest meets, the 2015 Canada Cup Central.
