Dyson engineers select 20 international ingenious ideas for shortlist, Two University of Waterloo teams reach the top 20

Dyson engineers select 20 international ingenious ideas for shortlist, Two University of Waterloo teams reach the top 20 | Canada's Technology Triangle Inc. | Scoop.it

Chicago - More than 600 James Dyson Award projects from 18 countries have been whittled down to a final shortlist. These 20 inventions enter the next stage of the international competition where James Dyson will decide the international winner, which will be announced on November 6th. The international winner will receive $46,000 and is encouraged to continue prototyping their invention and a further $18,000 for their university.

Dyson engineers selected two Canadian teams – both from the University of Waterloo – to make the international shortlist. EyeCheck, Ashutosh Syal and Daxal Desai, University of Waterloo: EyeCheck solves the problem of providing prescriptions for millions of people in the developing world using a smartphone app, standalone camera and server-side image processing. Suncayr, Derek Jouppi, Rachel Pautler, Andrew Martinko, Chad Sweeting and Hayden Soboleski, University of Waterloo: Suncayr is a colour changing marker that can be drawn on skin and changes colour when sunscreen is no longer working and the user needs to reapply.

Nick Schneider, Dyson design engineer and one of the judges said, “the EyeCheck team have managed to engineer an affordable way of diagnosing eye problems quickly. Potentially improving quality of life for many.”

Likening Suncayr to Dyson, Nick noted, “much like the way Dyson engineers approach every day problems, Suncayr is a simple solution for remaining protected in the sun. It is visual and intuitive, whilst also educating the user about the problem.”

Last year’s international winner was a team of four mechanical engineering students from the University of Pennsylvania who developed Titan Arm, a battery powered upper-body robotic arm which instantly increases human strength. The team used their prize money to continue to prototype and bring their design closer to commercialization.

Sandvine Receives $7 Million in Orders from Two Tier-1 North American Cable Operators

Sandvine Receives $7 Million in Orders from Two Tier-1 North American Cable Operators | Canada's Technology Triangle Inc. | Scoop.it

Orders further establish Sandvine's leadership in North American market
WATERLOO - Sandvine today announced that it has received approximately $7 million in orders from two tier-1 cable operators in North America – one existing customer and one new customer, through a competitive displacement.

One of the orders, which was originally expected to close in Sandvine's third quarter, relates to an operator who has been a Sandvine customer since 2007. The order represents an initial deployment of Sandvine's Network Analytics software and a major expansion of the deployment of Sandvine's policy traffic switch hardware across the network, to support both Network Analytics and policy use cases that improve subscribers' quality of experience.

The other operator is a new Sandvine customer and one of the ten largest cable companies in North America. The order represents an initial deployment of Sandvine's Network Analytics software and policy traffic switch hardware. The win was a competitive displacement of another standalone solution vendor.

Canada's Technology Triangle Inc.'s insight:

"Sandvine's customers include five of the top six cable operators in North America. We continue to be the trusted partner for network policy control in this key market and see opportunities for further expansion," said Tom Donnelly, Sandvine's COO, Sales and Global Services.

Google executive chair Eric Schmidt loves BlackBerry smartphones, particularly models with keyboards, but he says iPhones and Android devices are driving the market.
Canada's Technology Triangle Inc.'s insight:

What is Canada's reputation within Google, what are the offices and employees in Waterloo Region, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto known for?

  • "We have something like 400 engineers and something like 700 or 800 employees here and I always knew Waterloo was a fantastic engineering centre. What's recently happened is the University of Toronto and Montreal have become real centres for machine intelligence. So within Google in the U.S., we're hiring people from Canada to solve the fundamental problems of artificial intelligence and that's a new fact. It didn't used to be, you tend to think Waterloo was a programming languages university and they broadened what they were trying to do."

Waterloo Region can afford to borrow to invest

Waterloo Region can afford to borrow to invest | Canada's Technology Triangle Inc. | Scoop.it

Moody's Investor Service, a leading provider of credit ratings, research and analysis, gave the region the highest possible credit score this year for the 14th year in a row.

Canada's Technology Triangle Inc.'s insight:

Similar to other highly rated municipalities in Ontario, Moody's said Waterloo Region displays "strong governance and management characteristics. In addition to long-term planning for capital and operating budgets and a history of meeting fiscal targets, management adheres to conservative debt and investment management policies, thus limiting the region's exposure to market-related risks and ensuring relatively smooth debt-servicing costs."

Waterloo Region has historically outperformed Ontario on a number of economic and labour market indicators.

This year, the region will be spending money on projects:

•waste water treatment plant upgrades;

•landfill site maintenance and expansion;

•road network improvements and expansions;

•the rapid transit project (ION); and

•Grand River Transit garage expansions and fleet replacements.
