Héroux-Devtek Chooses Cambridge for Aerospace Expansion Ontario Supports New Jobs in Advanced Manufacturing

Héroux-Devtek Inc. leading international manufacturer of aerospace products, proceeded today with the inauguration of a new manufacturing facility in the city of Cambridge, Ontario. This facility is one of the key constituents of Héroux-Devtek’s comprehensive capital investment plan aimed essentially at successfully carrying out an important long-term contract to supply The Boeing Company with complete landing gear systems for the B-777 and B-777X aircraft, for which deliveries are scheduled to begin in early calendar year 2017.

Canada's Technology Triangle Inc.'s insight:

The 108,000 square foot facility, located in Cambridge’s new Boxwood Business Campus, will primarily manufacture large-scale, complex landing gear components. It is currently in the pre-production phase and is expected to be fully operational in June 2017.

If required, the facility could be expanded by approximately 100,000 square feet. Héroux-Devtek believes this facility will set new standards in regards to manufacturing technology and be viewed as a leading example in terms of productivity throughout the industry.

This state-of-the-art facility and other related investments by Héroux-Devtek in Ontario represent a total investment of approximately $54.2 million over a five-year period, including more than $46.0 million during the fiscal years ending on March 31, 2015 and 2016.

“This new facility will play a pivotal role in executing the most important landing gear contract in Héroux-Devtek’s history and its high level of automation will allow us to provide superior quality products to Boeing at a very competitive cost,” said Gilles Labbé, President and Chief Executive Officer of Héroux-Devtek.

Byrun, the walking, jumping, hopping robot, built using MapleSim models

Byrun, the walking, jumping, hopping robot, built using MapleSim models | Canada's Technology Triangle Inc. | Scoop.it

Using MapleSim, Byrun's designers and engineers have developed a biologically analogous leg design which will give Byrun the ability to walk, run, jump and hop. Byrun will be a new kind of full-scale dynamic humanoid that will take social robotics to the next level. With a faster, stronger, more dexterous upper body, a virtually infinite array of facial features (courtesy of his projective head display), and the same speaking and singing abilities as his predecessor, RoboThespian, Byrun has the potential to revolutionize human-robot interaction.

Canada's Technology Triangle Inc.'s insight:

By creating virtual prototypes of each design phase in MapleSim, Byrun's engineers can investigate the feasibility of mechanical solutions without needing to create a laborious series of prototypes.

“The software helps us to create the design parameters in a very fast virtual environment,” explained Guillaume. “We are no longer required to rebuild the robot for every design iteration, which saves us significant time and cost, and allows us to explore more radical options. As well, complex kinematics can be easily simplified with the use of Maple – this is a powerful tool as the resources required for the project are considerably reduced.”
