Note from the Curator of Canada Goes Social!

Note from the Curator of Canada Goes Social! | Canada Goes Social! | Scoop.it

I started curating “Canada Goes Social” in order to gain a better understanding of Canadian’s perspective on social media. I have been reading that we are more followers than leaders in this forum. So I wanted to gauge who is using it and also to identify who else shared my passion in Canada.

First step- find articles worthy of my Scoop it magazine.

Second step provide commentary on the highlights and what I have learned.

I am at step one! Join me on this journey as I collect these articles and my thoughts for step two!

Google searches, social media map out flu cases across Canada

Google searches, social media map out flu cases across Canada | Canada Goes Social! | Scoop.it
As an unusually intense flu season grips much of North America, tracking the flu has become a lot easier online, thanks to Google and social media.

Shirley A Williams's curator insight, January 10, 2013 2:20 PM

An interesting article on how Google's analysis of the search of "flu' related words are being used as a indicator for flu outbreaks.

A  Baltimore-based start-up is using social media networks to gauge where people are suffering from the flu, by tracking Facebook and Twitter posts.

Sickweather.com says it can detect flu infection patterns before health authorities do by looking at real-time posts from people complaining about being sick or going to see the doctor.

A very promising concept that can be a valuable tool for detecting public disease outbreaks.

Jennifer Stoddart told the House of Commons access to information, privacy, and ethics committee that social media companies amass a “staggering” amount of personal information from Canadians, and that while strides have been made to protect those details, she still has significant concerns about how they are handled.
“This is the age of big data where personal information is the currency that Canadians and others around the world freely give away,” she said.
“I have become very concerned about the apparent disregard that some of these social media companies have shown for Canadian privacy laws,” said Stoddart. ...

Guidelines Proposed in Canada to Open Courts to Social Media

Guidelines Proposed in Canada to Open Courts to Social Media | Canada Goes Social! | Scoop.it
A group of judges and other members of the justice system are proposing a set of national guidelines that would throw Canadian courts wide open to the use of social media.
Shirley Williams (XeeMe.com/ShirleyWilliams)'s insight:

Intersting article related to social media in the court system.A group of judges are proposing a set of national guidelines for the use of social media.

Apparently, there currently exists pockets of policies among provinces — some have no policy at all.

Finally there is the recognition that there is a growing numbers of people  and professions tha tdepend on social media  for information.

British Columbia and Saskatchewan both brought in new policies allowing "accredited journalists" and lawyers to use electronic devices in trial courts, with Saskatchewan even specifying that they may tweet from the courtroom. On the other end of the scale many provinces allow anyone to use such devices in appeal courts. However it is also noted that the phrase "accredited" journalist has the potential itself to cause problems. A recent incidence witnessed the application of  an independent blogger for accreditation was turned down.

Clearly there needs to be a level of consistency across the country. I am please to know that there is the level of recognition that social media is not a fad and it is here to stay.

#SocialMediaPearls Episode 6: The Content in Social Media | Social Media Pearls | Canada Goes Social! | Scoop.it

After the the social media strategy has been debated, discussed and finalized, what’s next? Well, one important tactic or plan is your content. What information will you share with your network? How will this information support your strategy, goals and quite frankly how will it take you to where you want to be?

This episode will touch on the subject of content marketing and curation. We will discuss content marketing concepts; how to share content that will deliver value to your customers and your business. We will discuss how both original content and curated content can lead to business gain.

I am so pleased to have as my guests Marcus Sheridan, The Sales Lion and Karen Dietz, Just Story It, to have this discussion. Both are strong leaders and practitioners in this field.

Karen Dietz has also been featured in the Scoop.it Lord Curation Series. Join us on Thursday June 21st 8pm on my Social Media Pearls iRadio show.

Too Old for Social Media? | Seniors Circle, Calgary - Canada

Too Old for Social Media? | Seniors Circle, Calgary - Canada | Canada Goes Social! | Scoop.it
Too old for social media? Don’t let anyone tell you that, because it’s not possible!
Survey after survey reflects that more and more senior Americans, including those in the most elderly groups, are participating in social media — though their numbers still lag behind other age groups. They are jumping on board Facebook, Twitter, You Tube and more (can Google+ be far behind?) as they realize it is fun and provides real benefits.

Building a better service culture in a social media world

Building a better service culture in a social media world | Canada Goes Social! | Scoop.it

Social media has taken the whole concept of word of mouth and really put it on steroids. We used to worry about how word of mouth would travel at the speed of a cocktail party, or around the water cooler at the office. Now you are operating in an environment where word of mouth is travelling at the speed of Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, or your favourite blog.

It has also empowered customers of any company to talk about the brand and the company. Every individual is suddenly in a position to be a publisher, journalist, critic, trip adviser, or blogger.

18 Social Networks For PetLovers, Owners & Pets

18 Social Networks For PetLovers, Owners & Pets | Canada Goes Social! | Scoop.it

As part of my niche social network series, today I am going to cast a light on social networks for pets! Yes, that’s right, social media networks for Pets-Lovers, Owners and their pets. With over 170 million dog and cat owners in North America alone, there is clearly a strong social community centered around pets. Pet-owners naturally conjugate- whether it is because of their daily walks, or for pet-shows, or for just comparing notes- this community is very passionate about their pets! So taking these conversations to a social network seems a natural next step.

Here are 18 social networks for all my petloving friends!

Rogers Twitter tactic backfires as customers use hashtag to vent about lousy ... - Toronto Star

Rogers Twitter tactic backfires as customers use hashtag to vent about lousy ... - Toronto Star | Canada Goes Social! | Scoop.it

Rogers got up on the wrong side of Twitter Friday morning.

The hashtag #Rogers1Number, which the communications giant paid to have atop Twitter’s list of trending topics for 24 hours, saw hundreds of customers, past and present, venting about unrelated issues, rather than celebrating the company’s new service, as its social media team likely intended.

The promotion — with the tagline “1 is the only number you’ll need” — was meant to highlight Rogers One Number which was launched last month as a free vehicle to extend an individual’s Rogers wireless number to their computer.

But respondents seemed to be talking about anything but.
