"Jockstrap Raiders, the animated short film by UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television MFA student Mark Nelson, is now available in its entirety for viewing online. The CG-animated short has received numerous awards, including the Silver Medal for animation at the 2012 Student Academy Awards.
Five years in the making, the 19-minute film takes place during World War I in Leeds, England, where a group of underdog misfits are excluded from the war due to various abnormalities. Frames is one awesome short mixed media animation. It’s about a character who thrust into different worlds after discovering the artificiality of his own world. It’s co-directed and animated by Martin Thoburn and Matti Adoma. The animation has a variety of different techniques to create the mixed media animation. They use pixilation, stop motion animation, green screen compositing, paper cutout and live action video. The story is just awesome, it literally jumps to different worlds. A world of the 60s, a world where the character is a monkey, the world of photoshop and various other ones. The one thing that keeps coming back are the frames/glasses and the green apple. THE LOST TOWN OF ŚWITEŹ was created in an original combination of 3D animation and classic animation painted with oil paints. Specially-commissioned large-scale paintings were composited into a multiple-plane 3D computer generated (CG) environment using state-of-the-art digital animation and compositing techniques. This unique artistic way creates a quality in itself and an extraordinary means of expression, which is crucial in animation, where strength of content and visual form merge into a striking and meaningful fusion. Two distinct styles of paintings were used: 19th-century Slavonic paintings (such as the work of Józef Chełmoński and Aleksander Gierymski), which give the illusion of perspective and use a realistic palette, combined with the much more stylized, brightly-colored and iconic 2D paintings of the Middle Ages.
