"I return to the doddleTALKS Tech podcast on episode 17. We discuss the approach to selecting cameras for Need for Speed, and by testing those cameras, how we found that they each had their own unique digital emulsion. It’s about each camera’s unique abilities and how to use those abilities to your advantage. Part of the challenge on Need for Speed is also managing the process of shooting with eight or nine cameras at one time. Today (April 30), we are on day 21 of the film and love the Canon 4k camera systems."

The good folks at Tenba sent me one of these bags and I love it! Meg does a great job describing the bag and the different uses. I haven't taken mine on a plane yet, but it is great to take multiple cameras as this bag has so much room and I absolutely love having the top section to pull out with audio gear. I don't have an 'audio person' but it is nice to have it separated from the lenses and cameras.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera: Footage in your pocket (02:39)

Posted by John Brawley on April 24, 2013 •

"So it’s time to look at some footage from the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera.

This footage was shot over about an hour at my local market on Sunday morning.  So yeah, it’s just home movies.    I was literally grabbing shots where I could whilst I was shopping !  But, you do get to see what one man can do with a pocket cinema camera and a 12-35 Panasonic m4/3 zoom.  I guess for those that like to shoot discretely, guerrilla or documentary style, this will give you a good sense of what you’re going to get.  The same great DR and look has been inherited from the BMCC.

All this footage was shot using the FILM look.   I set my exposure by ETTR and using the 100% zebra to indicate clipping.  I had IS on all the time.  I had a Hoya ND16 on as well to keep me at a slightly nicer stop.  I set the rear monitor to VIDEO and then used focus peaking all the time."

Working preview: The OIympus PEN E-P5

Working preview: The OIympus PEN E-P5 | "Cameras, Camcorders, Pictures, HDR, Gadgets, Films, Movies, Landscapes" | Scoop.it

Not so long ago, Olympus updated both the E-PL series (E-PL5 reviewed here) and the E-PM series with the OM-D’s sensor and other trickle-down technology. Thus it only made sense that it was also about high time for the E-P3 to be refreshed, too. They’ve taken a bit longer over this one; in fact, the new E-P5 has so much of the OM-D’s technology (and a few other things) that picking one over the other is no longer such an easy decision.

Storm Soldiers: Lineman Movie - shot on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III

Storm Soldiers: Lineman Movie - shot on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III | "Cameras, Camcorders, Pictures, HDR, Gadgets, Films, Movies, Landscapes" | Scoop.it

Power is a necessity in today's modern world. Most of us take for granted the work that it takes to build and maintain the power grid that supplies us with the electricity that powers our lives. Storm Soldiers is a film about the men who make it all happen. The linemen who work tirelessly behind the scenes so we can power our computers, heat our homes and light our lives. Danger is around every corner for linemen and the job is constantly on the top ten list for most dangerous jobs. This film is a tribute to the men and women that literally put their lives on the line everyday.

The Open-Source Cross-Platform Video Editor: Shotcut

The Open-Source Cross-Platform Video Editor: Shotcut | "Cameras, Camcorders, Pictures, HDR, Gadgets, Films, Movies, Landscapes" | Scoop.it
Dean Mantz's curator insight, May 7, 11:02 AM

Ever since I came across Robin's Scoop.it site I have found some top knotch resources.  When educators are looking to integrate video projects into their curriculum, one must consider what time may be needed outside of class to complete the work.  Well, here is one video option that works on multiple platforms.  Thus, enabling students to work on projects at home as well as school.

    173 Sud's curator insight, May 7, 11:12 AM

MakeUseOf :: Adobe Premiere. Final Cut Pro. Sony Vegas. AVID. All of these are high-end video editors that all have one attribute in common: they cost money. In an ideal world, there would be an equally high-end freeware video editing system out there. Unfortunately, most of the “editors” that do make these claims are embarrassingly poor and of little to no use.

However,  Shotcut may be a shining star in the world of free video editors. It’s an open-source, cross-platform editing system that is incredibly intricate, and it’s loaded with an arsenal of features so hot that they will melt your face off. More appropriately, Shotcut is a freeware video toolkit that is actually useful and won’t hold you back.

Shotcut offers basic cutting and trimming capabilities along with a zillion different codecs available for export. For the record, these are professional-level file formats, and you could even use Shotcut as a higher-end file converter from time to time, if needed. Also included is the ability to perform basic color correction with a three-wheel user interface, an eyedropper tool for post-production white balancing, and a few filters to choose from.

On the input side of things, Shotcut can receive footage via SDI, HDMI, and more. Timecode is supported, and the app will typically allow for native editing. Simply put, Shotcut is a fantastic piece of software to keep in your editing suite. I wouldn’t recommend it as your go-to editor, but it definitely has a place in the video production world.

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's curator insight, May 12, 12:13 PM

To install, simply extract the archive and run it. You can drag the Shotcut folder (app icon for OS X) to copy and move it wherever you want.
