I’m done spending time creating content for free

"I should have been on the phone continuing to make calls to prospective clients. I should have been working on the two book projects I have in front of me. I should have been swimming or running. But instead I was writing a piece about a $499 camera that will be obsolete in a few months and lost to nearly everyone’s memory in a year."

Harlan County U.S.A. -- 35th Anniversary at BAM.

Harlan County U.S.A. -- 35th Anniversary at BAM. | Camera Arts | Scoop.it

This award-winning landmark documentary unflinchingly documents a grueling coal miners’ strike in a small Kentucky town. With unprecedented access, Kopple and her crew captured the miners’ sometimes violent struggles with strikebreakers, local police, and company thugs. Featuring a haunting soundtrack—with legendary country and bluegrass artists Hazel Dickens, Merle Travis, Sarah Gunning, and Florence Reece—the film is a heartbreaking record of the 13-month struggle between a community fighting to survive and a corporation dedicated to the bottom line.

If Netanyahu, as he scribbled away at the rhetorical edges, was feeling a sense of urgency about the opportunity for peace, its seems more motivated out of fear that the Palestinians had scored a coup with their statehood application than anything...

Ashly Stohl: ¡Patina o Muerte! (Skate or Die)

Ashly Stohl: ¡Patina o Muerte! (Skate or Die) | Camera Arts | Scoop.it

Two thousand miles southeast in Havana, Cuba, I discovered a band of skateboarders not unlike the pioneering Venice crew I remember from my childhood. They have turned the entire city into their own skatepark; stairs, rails, and public monuments are all fair game. Empty fountains are swept out and skated in. Young boys learn to ollie on broken concrete and dirt. Equipment is scarce, and broken boards are patched and nailed back together.

In 2002, the FBI detained artist Hasan Elahi at the airport after a false report about his storage locker. Elahi started emailing the FBI his whereabouts and plans. Then things got more complex - and he reports everything about his life to anyone who wants to know. (And apparently the FBI, CIA and Department of Homeland Security have an interest.)

Lizzie SADIN: “Children Behind Bars”

Lizzie SADIN: “Children Behind Bars” | Camera Arts | Scoop.it

RADICAL LIGHT: ALTERNATIVE FILM AND VIDEO IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA

RADICAL LIGHT: ALTERNATIVE FILM AND VIDEO IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA | Camera Arts | Scoop.it

Punk was more than the music. It was an attitude that swept through culture like an angry roar. It thundered in the Bay Area's dank clubs, but it could also be detected in brash works made by bratty artists intent on aesthetic insurrection. Everything in this program is about loud, whether it's the sonorous outbursts of the Avengers, the Mutants, or the Dils in Mindaugis Bagdon's searing doc Louder, Faster, Shorter, The Residents's prepunk proddings in Third Reich and Roll, or the memorable mayhem of the Offs in Richard Gaikowski's Deaf/Punk. A caustic collage of found images, The Units' Training Film was a visual backdrop for this groundbreaking punk-syntho band. While the music was churning in the clubs, video artists were mangling the medium. Whether it be Dale Hoyt's last gasps of anxious youth, Barney Haynes's sonic travels through the wasteland, or Ivar Smedstad's slice-and-dice orchestrations, the proof was in the pummeling. Finally, sluggo selections from Target Video's Joe Rees take us into the core of the hardcore maelstrom.

Vertigo Variations, Pt 1 by B. Kite and Alexander Points-Zollo

Vertigo Variations, Pt 1 by B. Kite and Alexander Points-Zollo | Camera Arts | Scoop.it

Vertigo is an impossible object: a gimcrack plot studded with strange gaps that nonetheless rides a pulse of peculiar necessity, a field of association that simultaneously expands and contracts like its famous trick shot, a ghost story whose spirits linger even after having been apparently explained away, and a study of obsession that becomes an obsessive object in its own right, situated likewise on the edge of unreality. This video series avoids assigning the film any determinate shape and tries instead to enter it through a number of side doors, each indicative of a way of seeing.
