Terrestrial ecosystems provide a tremendous service to humanity and the well-being of the Earth by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, acting as a "carbon sink" where carbon inputs from photosynthesis are greater than carbon losses from plant and animal respiration.  Yet, the exact processes influencing the relative strength of land carbon uptake have remained elusive and an area of debate among scientists.

Last month, Dr. Arun Dhar moved to Tucson to begin his duties as an Associate Professor in the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences and as Director of the Aquaculture Pathology Laboratory. The Arizona Aquaculture Pathology lab serves as the OIE Reference lab for crustacean diseases and was developed and led by Dr. Donald Lightner for many years before his recent retirement. As Director, Dr. Dhar leads a world class research and development team with expertise in diagnostics, treatment and biosecurity against virtually all classes of pathogens and parasites of shrimp and other crustaceans.

A pervasive anecdote is that, come Super Bowl halftime, millions of people watching the big game will head to the bathroom to simultaneously flush their toilets.  Some say it's an urban legend. But is it? "I have never seen the 'Super Bowl super flush event' in writing, and I've never seen it mentioned in a peer-reviewed publication," said University of Arizona research scientist Jean McLain.
