Ask the Garden Sage: Beetle is damaging palo verde tree | Arizona Daily Star | CALS in the News | Scoop.it

A beetle in the Bostrichidae family called Amphicerus simplex causes the damage. It has no official common name so I am calling it the palo verde stem borer since that is what it does. These beetles are known for their boring activity, so much so that we commonly call the family of beetles to which it belongs the branch and twig borers and powderpost beetles.

It was one year ago that lightning struck and ignited the Yarnell Hill Fire, a devastating wildfire that resulted in the deaths of 19 firefighters who were members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots. This year, a combination of drought conditions, high winds and high temperatures all call for an intense fire season. Predictions indicate above-normal fire potential, and indicators suggest the onset of the monsoon season will be delayed.
