Cellphone use causes over 1 in 4 car accidents

Cellphone use causes over 1 in 4 car accidents | California Personal Injury Lawyer | Scoop.it
The National Safety Council reports that the mobile devices are involved in 26% of all motor vehicle crashes.
Norman Gregory Fernandez's insight:

Cell phones are no joke. Just yesterday as I was riding my motorcycle down Pacific Coast Highway, I saw a young girl who literally was looking down at her lap texting pretty much the entire time she was driving. How in the heck is she supposed to be paying attention to traffic, if she is looking down texting while driving. The answer is obvious, she is not paying attention to what she is doing.

Anytime I handle a motor vehicle accident, car accident, motorcycle accident, truck accident, or other type of accident involving a vehicle, and we get into litigation, I subpoena cell phone records for around the time the accident occurred. If it turns out that the defendant was texting, or on the phone at the time of the accident, it helps me to prove liability in a personal injury case.

The fact that the national safety Council reports that 26% of all motor vehicle crashes now involve the use of cell phones, just goes to show how dangerous and distracting these devices are when you’re driving.

If you’re going to use a cell phone while driving, absolutely use a hands-free device. Not only will you save yourself an expensive ticket in most states, with California my home state especially, you may save a life, or yourself significant money. I can assure you that if you injure one of my clients in a car or other motor vehicle accident, I will be looking at your cell phone records to see if you were distracted.

Norman Gregory Fernandez's insight:

This is a horrendous accident. Although we take driving for granted for the most part,  cars and other motor vehicles can be deadly if not driven with care.  Always drive safe,  and don't drink and drive.  One mistake can be your last.

Plugged in, tuned out: Teen distraction increases pedestrian accidents

(BPT) – From dating to driving to curfews, there's a lot to worry about if you have a teenager.
Norman Gregory Fernandez's insight:

Have a talk with your kids.  I see a major uptick in pedestrian accidents due to texting, or mp3 players in ears while walking.  There are enough dangers for pedestrians as it is. Put the phone down while walking.

Dozens Of California Marines Dying In Car Crashes - AOL Autos

Dozens Of California Marines Dying In Car Crashes - AOL Autos | California Personal Injury Lawyer | Scoop.it
More Marines from a Southern California base have died while in the United States than overseas at war in the last seven years, including a dozen killed in accidents on the same desert highway, a newspaper investigation ...
Norman Gregory Fernandez's insight:

I have dealt with my share of military member accidents, both car and motorcycle accidents, as a personal injury attorney.

I am calling for our armed forces to implement some kind of driver training classes for service members as a mandatory condition of letting them drive on base.

When I was in the Air Force, there were no training programs.

I am sure that if someone were to sit our troops down and explain to them that they are dying in car crashes, and that many of the crashes are due to alcohol, or speed, and that these vehicle accidents can be prevented, many of our troops will heed the warning.

It is time for the commanders to intervene.

Study: Fatal Car Crashes Involving Marijuana Have Tripled - CBS Seattle | California Personal Injury Lawyer | Scoop.it
Research finds drugs are playing an increasing role in fatal traffic accidents. (Marijuana's role in fatal traffic accidents is multiplying.
Norman Gregory Fernandez's insight:

Don't think that just because you have a medical marajuana card in California,  that it is legal to drive stoned. On the contrary,  or is illegal, and could make you liable for any accident you are in.
