As an auto accident lawyer practicing in Los Angeles, I can't tell you the number of times that I have seen distracted driving cause or contribute to a traffic collision.  This sign perfectly illustrates the concept that the human mind is only able to concentrate so well with multiple stimuli.  When you are behind the wheel, concentrate on the road and put the cell phone down.  You could save a life!

Steven M. Sweat's insight:

It will be interesting to see how compensation is structured in this deal.  In my opinion, as a personal injury attorney, the amounts set should reflect the estimated result If individuals were allowed to litigate the claims through a jury trial.

California Increases DMV Fees to Build ‘Hydrogen Highway’ But, Are Hydrogen Vehicles Safe?

California Increases DMV Fees to Build ‘Hydrogen Highway’ But, Are Hydrogen Vehicles Safe? | California Car Accident and Injury Attorney News | Scoop.it
A new California law will cost motorists more than $200 million to build hydrogen fueling stations, and there are safety issues that come with it.
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Governor Jerry Brown recently enacted legislation that will assess fees through the California Department of Motor Vehicles to build hydrogen fueling stations throughout CA.  With this, major auto manufacturers like Toyota and Hyundai are set to begin making and selling hydrogen fuel cell cars in the Golden State within the next 5-10 years.  Many questions still exist, however, on the safety of this technology.  Hydrogen is a very efficient fuel but, it is also highly flammable and combustible.  Any accident which causes extensive personal injury or death related to an explosion may prompt product defect litigation in the state and may cause auto insurance carriers to place a higher premium on insuring such vehicles.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

California Regulators Want Insurers to Speed Up Ridesharing Policies

California Regulators Want Insurers to Speed Up Ridesharing Policies | California Car Accident and Injury Attorney News | Scoop.it
The California Public Utilities Commission wants the insurance industry to get off its duff and start creating some products to offer to ridesharing driver
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

The ride sharing phenomenon is apparently out ahead of rules necessary to protect consumers according to the California Public Utilities Commission. Ride sharing companies like Uber and Lyft operate by allowing drivers to pick up passengers through a request on a phone app.  California has already become the first state in the nation to require commercial auto insurance coverage for these carriers (known as "transportation network companies").  However, there is still a question as to whether or not the driver's personal auto insurance or the companies liability insurance policy should cover injury claims from traffic collisions that occur while the driver is "en route".  California lawmakers are trying to address this issue.

Driver for Uber Rideshare Company Suspected of Kidnapping Woman

Driver for Uber Rideshare Company Suspected of Kidnapping Woman | California Car Accident and Injury Attorney News | Scoop.it
The alleged victim, a 26-year-old woman, called 911 from a convenience store to report she had just left a motel room where a man had been lying next
Steven M. Sweat's insight:

There are presently laws on the books in the State of California, which require that ride share companies like Uber perform criminal background checks on their drivers.  As I have been reporting in other blog posts, these companies seem to be lax in actually implementing this requirement.  I don't know that this particular driver was not screened but, the alleged incident does give serious cause for concern.

California thinking may backfire for Google's new self-driving car - CNET

California thinking may backfire for Google's new self-driving car - CNET | California Car Accident and Injury Attorney News | Scoop.it

Commentary: Google is a leader in self-driving cars, but its new, steering-wheel -free model may not resonate globally.

Steven M. Sweat's insight:

Do people "hate driving"? Well if you live in Los Angeles or some other crowded urban setting in California, you do often hate the "chore" of getting from point A to point B. Congestion leads to road rage and traffic collisions.  The author points out, though, that sometimes drivers want to and need to "take the wheel".  This would be tough in Google's new "driverless" car as it has no steering wheel!  California is the first state in the nation to establish vehicle code laws for driverless cars.  Promoting and marketing these vehicles in the Golden State will be a different matter.
