Former PBO Kevin Page: ‘Ottawa is Putinesque’

Former PBO Kevin Page: ‘Ottawa is Putinesque’ | Politics in Canada | Scoop.it
Former parliamentary budget officer Kevin Page slammed Prime Minister Stephen Harper in a speech in Halifax on Thursday, comparing him to Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia.
Page, asked to speak about accountability in Ottawa, said he thinks Canada has changed so much in recent years, it needs a long, drawn-out American-style election to air all the important questions.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

Page:  “I don’t see this government changing, and I see them dismantling institution by institution. We need to start the debate now.”

Wait, what? We’re not going to put a price on carbon? Or not, at any rate, at the national level? That’s no longer federal Liberal policy?

Acceleration in sea level rise far larger than initially thought, study shows

Acceleration in sea level rise far larger than initially thought, study shows | Politics in Canada | Scoop.it
The acceleration in global sea level from the 20th century to the last two decades has been significantly larger than scientists previously thought, according to a new Harvard study.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

If you believe in science, you can't ignore the evidence.

The new work is described in a January 14 paper published in Nature.

"What this paper shows is that sea-level acceleration over the past century has been greater than had been estimated by others," Morrow said. "It's a larger problem than we initially thought."

"Scientists now believe that most of the world's ice sheets and mountain glaciers are melting in response to rising temperatures." Hay added. "Melting ice sheets cause global mean sea level to rise. Understanding this contribution is critical in a warming world."

In his new book Kill the Messengers, veteran Ottawa journalist Mark Bourrie details the all-controlling aspect of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government. In this excerpt, he assesses the Conservative crackdown on federal historians, researchers and librarians.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

"The Index on Censorship took a survey of 4,000 Canadian scientists in 2013. Only 14 per cent said they felt they would be able to share a concern about public health and safety, or a threat to the environment, without fear of retaliation or censure from their department or agency."

Gormley: Canada must help Raif Badawi

Gormley: Canada must help Raif Badawi | Politics in Canada | Scoop.it
There are many reasons why the Canadian government should condemn Saudi Arabia for torturing a blogger more strongly than it has (only issuing a “concerned” public request for clemency), and many reasons why it should have condemned the torture...
Jody MacPherson's insight:

Gormley: Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird says “Canada has an active partnership” with Saudi Arabia. Surely he understands that an active partnership must measurably benefit not only light-armored vehicle companies, but human beings at risk of being tortured, beheaded and abused by a Saudi justice system that doggedly pursues such social ills as sorcery and female motorists. Badawi’s family hasn’t benefitted from such a partnership.
