Would this work in middle and high school?  I have so many students who would, at least initially, be motivated to work online to earn badges.  I foresee issues of authentication of work, but there is something worth exploring here.

MOOCSs: 20 ways to monetise

MOOCSs: 20 ways to monetise | CAEXI Expertises | Scoop.it

No one should deliver a MOOC without considering income but pure ‘monetisation’ is the wrong term, as a MOOC is an activity that needs to be seen in terms of both costs and income over time. So I’ll come at this as if it was both an income and cost issue, namely its impact on your profit & loss account. Note also that an institution could position its financial goal as an investment, aim for break-even or go for profit. Monetisation is ot just about profits.

In a recent post for The Atlantic, Derek Thompson investigates what drives people to read content online. As a writer for a popular news site, it’s of interest to Thompson to find out what people are clicking on and why when navigating through the endless amount of web content available. Though it sounds like a boring study of analytics at first, his findings and references are actually super interesting.

Investigating how the consumer interacted with traditional media and how the social media differs is one of the most fascinating studies for marketing and communications fold to undertake.

Some (myself included) would argue that very little has changed since the newspaper was King of the Hill. The same rules to engaging with carefully selected demographics apply, the same headline rules, the same intro paragraphy rules.

Grabd the reader's attention and make sure they stick.

The difference is the social media channels go far beyond simple print in sharability, targeting can be much more precise and engagement is taken to a whole new MEASURABLE level.

So, everything changes, but everything stays the same.

Apple’s new Apple TV SDK could completely revolutionize home gaming; Sony and Microsoft should be very afraid

Apple’s new Apple TV SDK could completely revolutionize home gaming; Sony and Microsoft should be very afraid | CAEXI Expertises | Scoop.it

Apple outsmarted us all. The iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches we all have in our homes are the best controllers, but looking at an iPhone screen and trying to watch a TV set across the room is a non-starter. The whole point of a gaming console is to focus on the larger screen in your TV. Enter the new Game Controller framework. Apple has given control to third party hardware manufactures to design and deliver a multitude of game pads.

Apple has also done something that should be keeping Microsoft and Sony up at night. Instead of building a bigger, faster, badder AppleTV they are offloading the processing power to iDevices. This allows Apple to keep the AppleTV price point at $99 and offloading the processing to the iPhone, that frankly, most of us already own. Using existing Airplay technology the AppleTV is poised to become the gaming console of 2013!

The Revolver forces us to throw away everything we know about moto. At the heart of the design lies a revolving chamber where backup air tanks are stored in sequence to power its compressed-air engine. Like this unique motor, the rest of the bike is likely to be alien to most riders. The only thing you might recognize are the handlebars & tires- and that’s precisely its appeal!

Machine Learning and Big Data Are Changing the Face of Biological Sciences

Until recently, the wet lab has been a crucial component of every biologist. Today's advances in the production of massive amounts of data and the creation of machine-learning algorithms for processing that data are changing the face of biological science—making it possible to do real science without a wet lab. David Heckerman shares several examples of how this transformation in the area of genomics is changing the pace of scientific breakthroughs.

This 36 min video is well worth the time spent - to get an idea (hopefully a transferrable one) about Big Data and the frontiers of science. In this case both "wet lab" (test tubes microscopes) and "dry lab" (computer modeling with machine learning) and needed and so is content as well as computational literacy.

OS X 10.9 Will Make The AppleTV Even Better | CAEXI Expertises | Scoop.it

Apple will greatly enhance multiple monitor setups under OS X 10.9. These changes also effect the AppleTV. Apple will basically turn the AppleTV into a wireless second monitor, users will be able to move windows to the AppleTV, while leaving the current monitor left for other things.

Look for the AppleTV to become more popular this Fall in the business world when OS X 10.9 is released.

PLOS ONE: A Simple and Efficient Method for Assembling TALE Protein Based on Plasmid Library

PLOS ONE: A Simple and Efficient Method for Assembling TALE Protein Based on Plasmid Library | CAEXI Expertises | Scoop.it

(via Tom Schreiber, thx)

Zhang et al, 2013

Although several new methodologies for efficiently assembling TALE repeats have been recently reported, all of them require either sophisticated facilities or skilled technicians to carry them out. Here, we described a simple and efficient method for generating customized TALE nucleases (TALENs) and TALE transcription factors (TALE-TFs) based on TALE repeat tetramer library. A tetramer library consisting of 256 tetramers covers all possible combinations of 4 base pairs. A set of unique primers was designed for amplification of these tetramers. PCR products were assembled by one step of digestion/ligation reaction. 12 TALE constructs including 4 TALEN pairs targeted to mouse Gt(ROSA)26Sor gene and mouse Mstn gene sequences as well as 4 TALE-TF constructs targeted to mouse Oct4, c-Myc, Klf4 and Sox2 gene promoter sequences were generated by using our method. The construction routines took 3 days and parallel constructions were available. The rate of positive clones during colony PCR verification was 64% on average. Sequencing results suggested that all TALE constructs were performed with high successful rate. This is a rapid and cost-efficient method using the most common enzymes and facilities with a high success rate.

5 (less traditional) ways to create and share knowledge online | CAEXI Expertises | Scoop.it

The communication of knowledge and ideas is intrinsic to the human condition. Our earliest ancestors had a rich oral tradition, through which they passed on what they knew about the world, often across great distances.

Today, the avenues available to our quest to gain and share knowledge are boundless, but I’d like to share with you five of my own personal favorites.

I love it when others share information with me, whether it be business, political, in which I am not all that much into, but it still helps to know what's happening in the world of politics, or whether it be history of old or new, knowledge is the key to life and especially education.
