The main stems are much branches and the flattened stem segments (pads) are fleshy, round and blue-green to blue-grey in color, up to 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter and have sharp spines up to 2 inches (5 cm) in length. The yellow, bowl-shaped flowers are up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) in diameter and are produced on the edges of the upper stem segments. Usually there are no spines on the younger stems, the spines grow progressively as the stem ages. It has no spines, but instead has numerous yellow (white or red-brown) glochids (micro-spines) 0.8 – 0.12 inch (2 – 3 mm) long at each aureole. Globular to cylindrical stem, 2 – 3.3 feet (60 – 100 cm), usually about 5 feet (150 cm) tall and 4 – 8 inches (10 – 20 cm) in diameter, bright green, covered with many minute white hairy scales. Usually 5 ribs, sometimes 3 or 4, increase to 8 or more with age (rarely even 10). Funnelform flowers, 1.6 – 2.8 inches (4 – 7 cm) long, glossy yellow and sweet scented from the areole at the tip of the stem on mature plant. Greenish to tannish-red fruits, 0.8 – 1 inch (2 – 2.5 cm) in diameter, covered with brown, overlapping scales, with long wool in their axil.
