Byzantine Art & Religion for World History Class

 

Objective: Analyze the role of religion in the Byzantine Empire by analyzing Byzantine Art

 

Visit the resources in this Scoop.it.  Explore  these resources to help understand the impact the Byzantine Empire had on art and culture.

 

First -- For each period: Early, Middle, and Late, summarize the political and religious history of the Byzantine Empire

 

Then -- Access the art on the side of the timeline or use our Library resources. Look for influences on the artist, as well as how the artist is influencing society. Complete the chart as you analyze the art.

 

ASSIGNMENT -complete the information below

 

Step 1 – Summarize Byzantine History

Visit the Met Museum site or other library resources.  For each period: Early, Middle, and Late, summarize the political and religious history of the Byzantine Empire.

        Early Byzantine Period (4th c. – 9th c.)

        Middle Byzantine Period (9th c. – mid 13th c.)

        Late Byzantine Period (mid 13th c. – 1453) 

 

Step 2 – Analyze Byzantine Art

Look for influences on the artist, as well as how the artist is influencing society. Complete the information below use a variety of time periods (find 2- 3 per each time)

 

Some reminders about the assignment 

1. Use bullets of full complete ideas and thoughts for Byzantine history. Do not use quotes. DO NOT  COPY AND PASTE. Draw on prior knowledge as well as web based sources.2.  6 Art entries with Images. Text MUST be typed. USE YOUR OWN WORDS.

Art During the Byzantine Empire

Complete this information for each piece of art

 

Title/Artist/Date (Include which time period)

 

Description of Art Identify the medium: Sculpture, Painting, Drawing, Mosaic Architecture, Craft, Other (name it)(include Image if possible)

 

Analysis (unique features of a work and their relationships) Does this work of art serve a utilitarian purpose? a church, a masque, a house ---? If not, what is its purpose? Is the shape and colors particular to the region? Significance of the choice

 

Interpretation (How artists are influenced by the world around them and/or how the artists influenced the world) Did religion, climate, wars, trade, location, freedom of expression, traditions , or economy shape the ideas ?

 

Judgment (Making a decision about a work’s importance) Does this transcend the common appearance of other objects meant for the same purpose? Is this work uniquely singular for its purpose, time and place? How does this work help us define a culture
