A Friendly Guide to Deploying iPads at Your School

A Friendly Guide to Deploying iPads at Your School | BYOD iPads | Scoop.it

Deploying iPads at any kind of scale is just short of maddening. While the process of tapping around to install one app on one iPad isn’t too bad, installing a dozen apps on hundreds iPads isn’t a particularly appealing way to spend a month. If you are going to deploy iPads at scale, you need a strategy. You need a battle plan. In addition, you will also need to stay hydrated. I don’t think I’ve discovered the silver bullet, but I’ll share some of my experiences with you in order to, hopefully, shorten the learning curve.

The 1-minute guide to the mobile classroom – e-moderation station

The 1-minute guide to the mobile classroom – e-moderation station | BYOD iPads | Scoop.it

Great short post.  Her 1-minute guides are perfect for beginning to use mobile learning in the classroom.  I think the simple nature of the task makes them perfect for action research that includes students.

For example do what she suggests:  "Let students talk about their mobile phones, and what they use them for. Many of us develop serious emotional attachments to our phones, and love showing or telling others about them."

Set this up with a hypothesis about what students might 'learn' from the task.  Ask them to hypothesize themselves about this. Do the activity. Record what happens as it happens and after it happens in a class log written by one of the students.  Take vids.  Take pix.  Return to the hypothesis or hypothesize and draw personal and class conclusions from a review of the data.  Ask students to suggest improvements and new directions for learning based upon what happened.

In a way these 1-minute guides point out the futility of creating "lesson plans" until we know more about where our students need to go.  It points to an even larger problem with pre-planned/packaged curricula.  I love the initial simplicity of these as an opener for the essential questions in every discipline.  Good on ya,  Nicky, for writing such an evocative post.

Is modern technology creating a culture of distraction?

Is modern technology creating a culture of distraction? | BYOD iPads | Scoop.it

Is there a need for moderation when it comes to phones or the internet or social media? Of course there is, and social norms are developing around those things, just as they developed around the horseless carriage and the telephone and plenty of other modern inventions. One of the devices that has historically drawn the most criticism from scholars and theologians for its corrupting effect on humanity seems to have worked out pretty well — it’s called the book.
