Pretty Sure Badges Aren’t the Answer to Our Motivation Problem | Andrea Zellner

Pretty Sure Badges Aren’t the Answer to Our Motivation Problem | Andrea Zellner | BYOD iPads | Scoop.it

As I’ve outlined in this space before, I am somewhat of a badge skeptic. At first it was a general uneasiness, then I started thinking about motivational theory and what it might predict about the use of badges as they’ve been operationalized in various ways by the Khan Academy, among others. As I started thinking through motivational issues, I kept bumping up to the fact that both research and theory suggested that on the whole, there is a very real risk to intrinsic motivation when badges are used in learning.

What are these tablets good for?

Parents are pressuring schools into buying iPads for the classroom, despite a lack of evidence about their educational benefit, no guidelines for teaching with them, and confusion about the best apps to use.
Schools across the state are purchasing ''significant'' numbers of iPads without any real idea of their true value in the classroom, a NSW Department of Education study has found. The department is now playing catch-up, conducting research trials in public schools to better understand the educational benefits of the devices.
''This is uncharted territory and we've gone in like a bull at a gate,'' said Kristy Goodwin, who is evaluating the trials for the department

The 10 Key Rules for Managing Time in Online Teaching - Faculty Focus | Faculty Focus

The 10 Key Rules for Managing Time in Online Teaching - Faculty Focus | Faculty Focus | BYOD iPads | Scoop.it

In my several years of teaching online I have developed a variety of time-management tools that have helped me to stay on top of my classes while making my efforts smoother and easier; hundreds of colleagues I’ve discussed this with over the years also have their favorite ways of managing time. As you can imagine, this collective wisdom includes a multitude of approaches (in fact, nearly 300 so far!), but what I present to you here is what I think are the best of the best. Use one, some, or all of these, and I assure you that you’ll have a much better time teaching online!

Learning with 'e's: Learning in a Digital Age: The myth and the reality

By Steve Wheeler:

"I recently gave a keynote at the eLearning 2.0 conference held at Brunel University, in West London. The presentation was a reworked version of one I gave earlier in the year in Tallinn, Estonia. In Learning in a Digital Age: The Myth and the Reality, I present a number of widespread beliefs about elearning, and challenge the provenance, reasoning and application of these theories. Learning styles, digital natives and immigrants theory, and the arguments that you cannot personalise learning in large organisations; or that SMS txting is dumbing down language; are all scrutinised and challenged. Brunel University did an excellent job of recording my voice and the slides, and synchonising them, probably using Camtasia or a similar tool. Here it is in full, for those who want to follow the arguments and discussion that ensued."

Pilot program to evaluate use of tablets in schools

Pilot program to evaluate use of tablets in schools | BYOD iPads | Scoop.it

"Tablets—with their lightweight portability and interactive touch screens—have been hailed as the next “must have” as schools move toward mobile computing. But questions linger: How much network access do students need? How can schools ensure that students will use the devices appropriately? Does more time using mobile devices translate into better academic performance?"

#digped Storify: "Hackulty" Meetings and the Cult of Pedagogy | #digped | HYBRID PEDAGOGY

#digped Storify: "Hackulty" Meetings and the Cult of Pedagogy | #digped | HYBRID PEDAGOGY | BYOD iPads | Scoop.it

If you have participated in twitter chats, perhaps you found them 'exhilirating'.  The busiest ones have twitter rates greater than one per second.  #Edchat is an example of one of these.  The folks who facilitate #edchat have always done a good job of putting the chat in context afterward. Here is an example of this:

http://blog.testsoup.com/blended-learning-edchat-summary-11-29-11/

#Digped does the afterchat narrative a bit differently.  They use Storify to sum up the event.  Here is an example:  http://www.hybridpedagogy.com/Journal/files/Hackulty_Meetings.html

I would call this kind of knowledge work 'strong curation' as opposed to the weak, automatic kind that is closer to archiving.  And it entails quite a lot of work.  I did one of these summaries for #edchat once and was amazed how much goes into gathering, filtering, and making sense of the great gob of information in these hour long chats that are only guided by a single question.

I have been thinking that perhaps another way to tell the story of a twitterchat is via video.  I think some of the newer tools like Vialogue or ExplainEverything for the iPad or a combination of the two might work.  I have this crazy vision in my head of a play-by-play commentary/highlights reel that would use annotation tools to point out what was valuable.  What do you think?

Hybrid Pedagogy is an academic and networked journal of teaching and technology that combines the strands of critical and digital pedagogy to arrive at the best social and civil uses of technology and digital media in education.
