Why online education is mostly a fantasy

Why online education is mostly a fantasy | BYOD iPads | Scoop.it

In the end, MOOCs and online programs primarily help those who are self motivated to learn, and the vast majority of these people would have figured out how to educate themselves, whether in college or on their own, regardless of whether or not online courses are available.

Jason R Levine's comment, May 3, 4:21 PM
There need not be a dichotomy of online learning and having the personalized attention of a teacher/coach. This article, and others like it, are misguided if their point is that online education will forever remain a fantasy; they are valuable articles in that they correctly note what's limiting and/or dysfunctional now to set us on course to the new "reality" of online and blended learning being superior to traditional "brick and mortar" education.

Patrick Larkin Interview: Are Tablets Solutions or Problems? | BYOD iPads | Scoop.it

"Patrick Larkin, Assistant Superintendent for Learning, Burlington Public School District, Burlington, Ma, recalls a question someone posed to him: “Is the tablet an education solution, or an education problem?” His answer, and common sense approach to changing the school and learning environment is a professional development lesson for all. Enjoy my interview with Patrick Larkin, and learn why he’s become one of the most respected tablet education voices today—and for the future."

Bill Campbell's curator insight, April 24, 11:23 AM

I like Patrick's statement that you can have an effective teacher with our without technology. I particularly agree that while you may get some positive changes by just dropping technology into the hands of a motivated teacher, the real gains require support for teachers that include professional development and COLLABORATIVE EXPERIENCES where teachers can share ideas and practices with peers.  Patrick is a very online-connected educator from what I've seen from him and about him in the past so I'm not surprised he advocates a culture of of professional sharing.  Of course, I suspect those experiences have assisted his professional success and helped him assist others as an administrator so they shouldn't just be discounted as coming from some guy who likes to do things online.

A New Pedagogy is Emerging...And Online Learning is a Key Contributing Factor

A New Pedagogy is Emerging...And Online Learning is a Key Contributing Factor | BYOD iPads | Scoop.it

"In all the discussion about learning management systems, open educational resources (OERs), massive open online courses (MOOCs), and the benefits and challenges of online learning, perhaps the most important issues concern how technology is changing the way we teach, and - more importantly - the way students learn. For want of a better term, we call this 'pedagogy.' What is clear is that major changes in the way we teach post-secondary students are being triggered by online learning and the new technologies that increase flexibility in, and access to, post-secondary education."

The Smart Way to Use iPads in the Classroom

The Smart Way to Use iPads in the Classroom | BYOD iPads | Scoop.it
The school has an unconventional take on the iPad’s purpose. The devices are not really valued as portable screens or mobile gaming devices. Teachers I talked to seemed uninterested, almost dismissive, of animations and gamelike apps. Instead, the tablets were intended to be used as video cameras, audio recorders, and multimedia notebooks of individual students’ creations. The teachers cared most about how the devices could capture moments that told stories about their students’ experiences in school. Instead of focusing on what was coming out of the iPad, they were focused on what was going into it.
