n 2014, all manufacturers using Google's smartwatch operating system — including Motorola, LG, and Samsung — sold 720,000 units.

In contrast, Apple sold an estimated 957,000 Apple Watches on the first day the devices were available for preorder.

These figures do not bode well for Google's app ecosystem.

For a while it seemed that Google was so busy getting geeky with glasses and driverless cars that it was blind to the big opportunity directly in front of it — bringing enterprise level security to the nearly 1 billion Android mobile devices that, in some way or another, are used on the job or for work purposes every day. “For many, these phones have become essential tools to help us complete important work tasks like checking email, editing documents, reviewing sales pipelines and Topic: Mobile Enterprise.

Android for work can potentially solve the security issue, but Google still has a long way to go before it gets anywhere close to breaking the hold that iOS has over enterprise market share. 

According to the latest Mobility Index Reportcovering Q4 2014 from Good Technology, Apple has strengthened its market share in term of activations, commanding 73% of activations. Android, by contrast, only has 25% market share of activations.

On Wednesday, February 25, Google launched its new Android for Work initiative. Here's what it means for Google in the enterprise.
