We celebrate the courage of those who crossed the bridge 50 years ago, but how many of us, walking down Broad St., sipping fruity drinks and wearing our Michael Jackson T-shirts, would have the resolve and firmness of purpose to do the same thing now?
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

.....Thanks Leonard for a very thoughtful commentary on this weekend events!  I took feel that there was to much of a "carnival atmosphere" to the whole weekend.

"Curiosity drill site reveals Mars isn’t red - it’s greyish-blue" | Science Alert | 03/02/15 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it
NASA’s Curiosity rover has drilled down into Mars to collect samples, and it’s revealed that just under the dusty red surface, the Red Planet is actually a greyish blue. The drilling happened at a site called Telegraph Peak, right up in a region called Pahrump Hills, where Curiosity has been working for the past five months. It’s been drilling into the rocky surface to get some idea of how and when Mars evolved from a wet environment to the dry and dusty one we see today, and in the process has discovered that the dusty red top layer is made up of completely different stuff than the actual planet itself...
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

"The FCC Did a Lot More Than Just Approve Net Neutrality Today" | Mother Jones News | 02/26/15 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it

The FCC voted today in favor of strong net neutrality rules, but this is something that's been expected for weeks—and something I've written about before at length. So instead of commenting on that yet again, I want to highlight something else that might be nearly as important:

The Federal Communications Commission will allow some cities and towns to set up and expand municipal Internet services, overruling state laws that had been put in place to block such efforts.

The commission granted petitions by Chattanooga, Tenn., and Wilson, N.C., to overturn laws that restricted the ability of communities in those states to offer broadband service. In all about 20 states have passed such laws. The vote was 3-2 and along party lines. The decisions don’t affect the other states, but they do set a precedent for consideration of similar petitions in the future.

......It's time for Rural America to Build Regional Broadband Cooperatives!!

"KKK founder remembered in billboard at the foot of Selma bridge" | Daily Mail UK | 03/07/15 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it

Today, the President will commemorate the hundreds of people brutally attacked on a bridge in Selma 50 years ago during a peaceful protest for racial equality.

But just this week, a billboard was erected within sight of the historic location in memory of a Ku Klux Klan founder Nathan Bedford Forrest.

It has prompted outrage in the Alabama city as many claim it demonstrates underlying racial tensions that linger half a century after the march.

The sign, bearing a portrait of Forrest on horseback and a Confederate flag, stands at the foot of Edmund Pettus Bridge - which is named after a former KKK Grand Wizard.

On the reverse, it reads: 'SelmaPostHerald.com welcomes President Barack Obama And You To Selma.'

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:
