"Mandela and Reagan: The Truth that Right-Wing Republicans Would Rather Forget" | Nomadic Politics | 12/07/13 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it

With the long-predicted death of Nelson Mandela, we can expect to hear a lot of swell things being said in memorial about this man's courage and humanism as he led his nation toward greater equality. Both sides of the political spectrum are bound to say a lot of things in praise of Mandela and his work and life. In the next few days, you will hear about the evils of apartheid and how much better the world is without it. However, there's another point that none of us should forget. When it came to apartheid, the Reagan Republicans were definitely on the wrong side of history.

Welcome back Nomad! Your reflecttive, well researched writings are so welcomed. The articles are also thought provoking and well rounded with clear thinking and vision. The Nomadic view of politics is always refreshing. Missed your input.

Excerpt:

As Bratyanski points out, the American press had largely portrayed the South African activists - like Mandela and others- as Communist-backed organizers, determined to undermine South Africa. Black youths were "on the rampage" and news organizations offered American viewers plenty of news footage to prove it. As we known, one powerful image of a burning car and a looted shop is quite effective as reducing any moral arguments. Larger questions about the legitimacy of white-minority rule, which were the underlying cause of the civil unrest, were generally ignored. - See more at: http://nomadicpolitics.blogspot.com/2013/12/madela-and-reagan-truth-that-right-wing.html#sthash.yUfviDX2.dpuf

Smartphone-based device could provide rapid, low-cost molecular tumor diagnosis | KurzweilAI | 04/15/15

Smartphone-based device could provide rapid, low-cost molecular tumor diagnosis | KurzweilAI | 04/15/15 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it
A smartphone-based device developed by Harvard Medical School investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital could bring rapid, accurate molecular diagnosis of cancer and other diseases to locations lacking the latest medical technology.

The device uses technology for making holograms to collect detailed microscopic images for digital analysis of the molecular composition of cells and tissues.

“The global burden of cancer, limited access to prompt pathology services in many regions, and emerging cell profiling technologies increase the need for low-cost, portable and rapid diagnostic approaches that can be delivered at the point of care,” said Cesar Castro, HMS instructor in medicine at Mass General and co-lead author of a report in PNAS Early Edition.

“The emerging genomic and biological data for various cancers, which can be essential to choosing the most appropriate therapy, supports the need for molecular profiling strategies that are more accessible to providers, clinical investigators and patients.

"This year's Pi Day is even more special than you know" | Vox Conversations | 03/13/15

Tomorrow is the most magical day of the year: Pi Day.

It's also the most magical year of the century: Pi Year.

That is, tomorrow's date is 3/14/15 (at least in the US and a few other countries that write dates the same way), which matches up nicely with the first five digits of pi, the ratio of every circle's circumference to its diameter: 3.1415.

What's more, at precisely 9:26:53 am, we'll have Pi Second: an even more magical time at which the date and time match up with the first 10 digits of pi, 3.141592653.

GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL!!........."The term “Anthropocene” means, simply put, the “era of us.” It is used by scientists and thinkers to describe the rapidly changing world we’re living in, and to present the idea that human activity has so drastically altered the planet that humanity in itself is the defining environmental influence of our time. The term was first put into scientific use by Dutch chemist Paul Crutzen, who won a Nobel Prize in 1995 for discovering the specific group of chemicals that caused a hole to open in the ozone layer. America's IRISH President - Barack Obama (VIDEO) | If You Only News | 03/15/15 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it
Yes, it's true. The President has Irish blood and it was proven back in 2007 when Stephen Neill, an Anglican pastor, did some research and found the President's roots did go back to the Emerald Isle. Of course you won't hear this from the GOP or Tea People.
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

...."But it’s true. According to Neill, who worked with Ancestry.com’s Megan Smolenyak, their chief family historian, Obama’s Irish family hails from Moneygall, Ireland. The President is part of the “Kearney” family.  According to pieced together records, A Kearney sailed to New York aboard the S.S. Marmion at a time when many Irish were leaving their famine-stricken island.  He made a life in America, and his family line eventually produced Ann Durham, who was born in Kansas, according to Ancestry.com. Durham married a Kenyan, also named Barack Obama, who was studying in Hawaii, and in 1961 they had a son. The rest, as they say, is history."
