"Pipeline proposal raises ire of many Georgia residents" | Valdosta Daily Times | 10/12/14 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it
ATLANTA — A proposal to build a $3.7 billion pipeline system carrying natural gas into Florida is raising complaints from Georgia residents — including media mogul Ted Turner — who say they’d face environmental costs while others get the benefits.
Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

NGC 6823: Cloud Sculpting Star Cluster
Image Credit & Copyright: Donald P. Waid (Waid Observatory)

Explanation: Star cluster NGC 6823 is slowly turning gas clouds into stars. The center of the open cluster, visible on the upper right, formed only about two million years ago and is dominated in brightness by a host of bright young blue stars. Some outer parts of the cluster, visible in the featured image's center as the stars and pillars of emission nebula NGC 6820, contain even younger stars. The huge pillars of gas and dust likely get their elongated shape by erosion from hot radiation emitted from the brightest cluster stars. Striking dark globules of gas and dust are also visible across the upper left of the featured image. Open star cluster NGC 6823 spans about 50 light years and lies about 6000 light years away toward the constellation of the Fox (Vulpecula).

Sea stacks mark former positions of the coastline, but remain standing above the waves because they are more resistant to erosion. At Bandon Beach, these sea stacks consist of sandstone, greenstone, chert, and even blueschist blocks. These rocks belong to the Jurassic age Otter Point Formation, a part of the Franciscan Assemblage that was accreted to the west coast of North America during the Cretaceous. "On Indigenous Peoples Day, Let's Move on to a New View of Native Americans" | Huff Post | 10/08/14 | FDW's Daily Scoops | Scoop.it

"When most Americans think of Native peoples, if they think of us at all, they think of Thanksgiving and its benign legend of Pilgrims and Native Americas sitting down together to a shared meal long, long ago. Unfortunately, the collective American gestalt places its indigenous peoples in the past, part of a bygone regrettable era. We were the unlucky sacrifice to the pre-ordained rights inherent in the mentality of Manifest Destiny that permitted European takeover of our lands. Sad, yes, but time to move on."....

From the Temple of the Sun to the Temple of the Moon
Image Credit & Copyright: Dave Lane

Explanation: What connects the Sun to the Moon? Many answers have been given throughout history, but in the case of today's featured image, it appears to be the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy. The 16-image panorama was taken in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, USA where two sandstone monoliths -- the Temple of the Moon on the left and the Temple of the Sun on the right -- rise dramatically from the desert. Each natural monument stands about 100 meters tall and survives from the Jurassic period 160 million years ago. Even older are many of the stars and nebula that dot the celestial background, including the Andromeda Galaxy. Tomorrow the Earth will connect the Sun to the Moon by way of its shadow: a total lunar eclipse will be visible from many locations around the globe.
